I felt like I let you down last week, having only really covered about 17 new songs, but in that, we tried to make sure there were some burners in there that would get you excited. What better way to start off this week’s recap than bringing you the world’s best power pop outfit, The High Water Marks and their new single. We got a new RVG tune, which is never a bad place to be, plus Beach Fossils continued to show their growth on the new LP. And, it wouldn’t be us if there was no Austin contingent, so we ran an acoustic session from Redbud, plus the latest from Dress Warm. Take a listen.

I cannot currently think of a band that is creating pop rock as good as The High Water Marks; there’s not even a band that comes that close in my mind. This go round, the group offer up a big wall of noise to go with their tasty musical treats; you’re greeted by that punch from the get-go, smashing through your speakers with this big wall of heavy riffs and thumping percussion. Still, those move to the side to drop in these lighter jangling notes and catchy melodies (throwing in some bonus whoohoos never hurts either); it’s the gravitational pull of the group’s work, even when they’re willing to blow your hair back with some punchy bits of volume. The group will be instantly world-famous when they drop Your Next Wolf on June 23rd.

The High Water Marks Share Let’s Hang Out Forever

It seems crazy to me that the latest single from perennial ATH faves The High Water Marks started out as what the band called “a mellow pop tune…about finding what you love and doing it forever,” as the instant you click play, it will seem like anything other than mellow. You’re met with a quick drum roll and bending guitar notes tearing right through your speakers, but don’t fear, as the band quickly slide right back into the best brand of power pop you’re going to find today (and the next). Slight little pop jangles hang in the air, with the melody driving the song towards its enthusiastic choral chorus performed by the whole band. Every great single the band drop brings us closer to the release of their next album, Your Next Wolf, so keep your ears ready!

Last Week’s Jams (2.6 – 2.10)

Well, it seems like we finally worked out the kinks in our lives and were able to get a solid week’s worth of jams out your way. Was excited to get that new High Water Marks tune out there, as well as new Monnone Alone, if you like your pop mixed with a bit of punch. New Austin act Daiistar has their first single, plus our old ATX friends Letting Up Despite Great Faults dropped a new single too from their forthcoming EP! There’s tons of other hits from the likes of Deuce and the Golden Dregs too. Unfortunately, new stuff from Mythical Motors and Weird Numbers isn’t quite on the DSPs, so if you like what we’re covering, check those hits too on the site.

The High Water Marks Return with New Single

If, by some odd chance, you missed out on last year’s Proclaimer of Things, you can certainly rectify that by running to listen to last year’s hit LP. But, if you just want to jump right in to the new new, give a listen to the High Water Marks latest single, with the promise of new LP coming later in the year! I won’t even mention the ties to Elephant 6 (oops!) because the song’s just a straight pop rock tune that you’ll want to play again and again. It brings about just the slightest heaviness in the riffs, with a solid bop going on in the percussive element keeping your toes tapping. Oh, and if your band is doing dual vocal approaches, please make them this delightful. We’ll keep you posted on Your Next Wolf when we hear more!

Last Week’s Jams, Today (2.7 – 2.11)

Jumping into this week by looking back at last week, in the most uncool fashion, using a Spotify playlist; the world’s probably going to stop dead right there. But, last week had some rad tunes, with friends Half Dream and Squiggles both jumping in with new tunes for us. Plus, we got to revisit some recents releases from Tat Songs and The High Water Marks. And ultimately, got to meet some new faces, at least to me, like Sooner and Erasers. But, I’m starting it off with that super rad Pachyman jam, so sit back and get grooving into your Monday.

If you’re looking to uncover a power-pop gem that might not be on everyone’s radar, you should definitely spend time listening to the latest LP from The High Water Marks. Sure, you’re going to get drawn in by the Elephant 6 connection, but you need to really focus on just how great all the songs are inside. I mean, I’m dropping one track below that just feels like the perfect piece of summery pop, rich with this vocal vibrancy that explodes through your speaker hitting you smack dab in the face. Each song’s immediately charming, immediately winning you over, and immediately encouraging you to press play again. Proclaimer of Things is out now!

The High Water Marks Share Fantastic Machine

The High Water Marks are perhaps most well-known as a band led by Elephant 6 co-founder Hilarie Sidney; I think their glorious return in 2020 with Ecstasy Rhymes showed that the band is more than just the history of its members. Their newest single immediately should let you know the band mean business; it’s a quick pumping pop rock tune, gritty in its riff work when necessary, though all pulled together by the melodic notes that dominate the verses. There’s this emphatic moment in the vocals leading into the chorus like when it says “do you have to go” where the tones get this slight urgency, and it just gets me every time; then it leads into the chorus where Hilarie makes a nice vocal appearance in the backing ground. But, it’s not all melodic pop, with a fierce instrumental battle closing out the tune! This track features on Proclaimer of Things, the new album out on February 4th.
