Show Preview: Destroyer @ The Mohawk (3/25)

Date Friday, March 25th
Location Mohawk
Doors 800p
Tickets $12 from Transmission

What? You didn’t get enough good music from SXSW?  Good, because we’ve got one great bill laying in wait for you over at Mohawk this Friday.  First, you’ll get the quirky pop wonderment of Destroyer, or Dan Bejar if you like.  For his voice alone you should attend this show, nevermind the amazing song arrangements he’s managed to put together over the years.  Also, you’ll get one of our new favorites, War on Drugs, who craft really quiet, atmospheric numbers seemingly filled with secret messages.  This show could be out of this world, and we hope that you’ll head out to the Mohawk to meet up with us.  Both bands are guaranteed to be worth your time.

Date Wednesday, Jan 26th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets FREE w/ RSVP

Okay, you have to go to this.  First, The Hex Dispensers are one of the great bands in Austin, and I think they’ve been vastly overlooked.  It’s cool, you totally have the chance to make up for it.  Then, you can also catch opening act King Tuff, who’s been around for a bit kicking out the garage-y jams.  He recently put out a record with some friends as Happy Birthday, so if you remember that, you remember it being pretty solid.  And, you want the icing on your cupcake? It’s absolutely FREE, all you have to do is RSVP.  So, to recap, you get awesome tunes, and you don’t have to free. No excuses.  Here’s a track from Happy Birthday to get you in the mood.

Show Preview: Ty Segall @ the Mohawk (10/1)

Date Friday, October 1st
Location Mohawk – Inside
Doors 1000 pm
Tickets $8 at the Door

In case you haven’t been able to make some of the super-memorable shows this week, a la Pavement or GBV, you have a chance to make up for that by attending Ty Segall on Friday night.  I caught the dude a few months back, and I’m super excited he’s coming back through town.  His new record Melted is a huge progression, and it definitely has me loving his every move.  You’ll want to go check him out, and you’ll also get a chance to see The Golden Boys and Pure Ecstacy in the mix on the evening too. Don’t miss it; you’ll be glad you went.

Show Preview: Screaming Females @ Mohawk (9/8)

Date Wednesday, September 8th
Location Mohawk
Doors 1000p
Tickets @ the Door only

The first time I was able to catch Screaming Females, I was rather impressed.  Admittedly, I had gone to see if Ted Leo would sweat all over me, which he did, but this threesome kicked out some powerful jams all the same. They had a knifes-edge tilt, rushing through their set with fury and female vocal prowess.  You’ll definitely have a harder time finding such a sweet evening of tunes.  They’ll be backed up by Yellow Fever, who should definitely fit this bill a great deal, and The Crackpipes.  See you inside the Mohawk, and grab the band’s record Castle Talk–if they have it early.

Show Review: Ariel Pink @ the Mohawk (8/3)

For years people have been talking about Ariel Pink as if he was some sort of underground genius, waiting for his chance to break through to the masses, if only he had the chance.  After the release of the recent album, Before Today, it seems the chance is upon him.  We headed out to the Mohawk to see for ourselves, and to catch Puro Instinct and Magic Kids along the way.  Follow the jump for more.

Eddy Current Suppression Ring is one of the bigger indie bands rocking around the country of Australia.  They’ve just released their album Rush to Relax, and now they head to our fair town to put their energetic live set on display.  It should be an evening full of jangling guitars, pounding drums and all around good times.  An additional bonus is that one of our favorite Texas acts Fergus and Geronimo will be opening the evening for you all, so get there early to support a somewhat local act.
