Begin a busy show week tonight, and yes, it will be hot, but suck it up. Satan says dance in the 100F courtyard of The Mohawk with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. Roger Sellers is opening with an acoustic set, that should be interesting. Alec is in the middle slot with some solo work. We’ll see what that is all about, double duty on a hawt day.

Take a listen to a slice of the new epic stuff with this.

Update: COLD FRONT?

Show Pics: Locals Only @ Mohawk (7/26)

Black Books…with a brief visit to Cheer Up.

So we talk quite bit about supporting the locals. We also suggested making supporting the locals easier with folding in the artists in smart ways. Our friends at The Mohawk had a great idea; why not fill a night off with an inside/outside show for a cheap cover to help you see a ton of local talent? Make it so.

Perfect excuse to have fun with the nifty fifty and spend a night milling about The Mohawk and saying hi to friends with a soundtrack provided by Little Radar, Wiretree, Young Tongue, Supermoon, Black Books, Modern Medicine and a quick trip next door to catch up with Shivery Shakes at Cheer Up.

Show Pics: Daughter @ The Mohawk (9/17)

There aren’t too many bands out there right now on the up swing of buzz that Daughter currently enjoys. The Mohawk was kind enough to host the freshly minted headliners as they rolled through town in a big bus, pulling a trailer with guitar techs and stage managers en employ. Though the forecast threatened a rain out, the people streamed in to endure the moist conditions and sweat to their new favorite band. Bear’s Den opened.

Show Pics: Austra @ The Mohawk (9.13)

I really enjoy the nights when I can double up shows. A positive of the noise ordinance regulations is that the outdoor shows at Stubb’s and The Mohawk finish early enough to head over to another venue to do more shimmying. We already shared show notes and pics from Dent May, now we have some Austra love.

This ended up being a very photogenic show. DIANA was a pleasant surprise and the light show and ever-improving stage presence of Katie Stelmanis made Austra a true headliner.

Show Preview: Austra @ The Mohawk (9/13)

Date 9/13
Location The Mohawk
Doors 8pm
Tickets $14

We last saw Austra opening for The XX at ACL Live. Their set kind of took us by surprise. Gone were the headdress veils and theatrical makeup, replaced by genuine interaction ans a strong presence from front-woman Katie Stelmanis. That and her really locked down vocal; I am looking forward to hearing new tracks from the new album Olympia come to life.

I expect more of the same tonight, so join me before I head over the Red7 for Dent May. Double up. Diana opens.

You can hear the latest single “Home” that is very grounded and a little less digital, if you will, by clicking here, but I’m gonna give you my fave jam to get you in the mood…

Show Review: Ty Segall @ The Mohawk (8/27)

Ty Segall may as well just move to Austin and live at the condos across the street from The Mohawk. It would shorten his commute. Why do all that touring? I have a feeling, plenty of fans would be fine with it.

Ty is supporting his latest effort, a solo record called Sleeper that is a bit of a surprise to many fans. As you can read in Nathan’s review, the album has Ty picking up the acoustic guitar for a good majority of the songs, a first for some time. I have gotten used to going to Ty Segall Band shows and bracing my ribs for the inevitable crowd crush that would happen behind me while snapping a few pics. But how would the faithful react to this more personal side of Ty playing Sleeper in its entirety?

Read on for more thoughts on Ty and the openers Hidden Ritual and Holy Wave with plenty of pics…

Show Review: Kurt Vile @ Mohawk (8/20)

The crowd filled into Mohawk on a warm August evening, selling out for one of the most popular names in the indie realm, Kurt Vile. He came into town behind praise for Wakin’ on a Pretty Daze, his latest album; he was supported by Sonny and the Sunsets

I probably had different feelings than most leaving the night, so you can read those thoughts, or just check out the great photo work of our boy Brian Gray.

A Saturday Night In Austin

Saturday was busy. A couple of smaller shows were happening with ATH favorites playing at Holy Mountain and The Mohawk‘s inside stage. Matt Pond PAbrought along Matrimony in the former and Superhumanoids played the latter. It was nice of them to ask locals Tiger Waves and Orthy to join in, respectively.

I wore comfortable shoes (fashion faux pas flip-flops actually), grabbed the little camera, brought along the wife, alerted the friends and proceeded to mosey between venues on the Red River corridor. Join me for a little photo journey, won’t you?

Show Review: Baths @ The Mohawk (6/21)

Sure, it was hot. The Mohawk didn’t sell out, but it got close while still being a “comfortable crowd”, as I call it. It means you can mill about, check out different vantage points with out territorial conflict.

The busy lineup with D33J, Houses, Baths and Beisbol meant a doors to close night for your truly. I took plenty of pics, saw plenty of friends, maybe had a whisky and saw some great music. Join me as I (unsuccessfully) reminisce on a successful Friday night.
