Elegant Pop from June Pastel

June Pastel is the project of Venezuelan-American Anthony Pena; he’s crafting this wondrous pop that pays homage to the various roots of the genre, though in doing so, he’s crafting a sound entirely unique. At times, this new tune feels as if it falls into the dreamy realm of bedroom pop, but at other moments it explodes into a euphoric pop number with the various layers all melding to create a natural warmth. The debut album from the project is slated for release this Summer via Native Sound.

Luke Reed was in one of my favorite bands, Bent Shapes; I’ve always raved about their tunes on this here site. But, now Luke seems to be focusing on solo work; he’s got a brand new track that was just released today that follows the critically acclaimed reissue of Won’t Be There. This is the sort of dreamy pop we all adore, heavy on the synth washes and vocals that seem to just hang out there in the air. It doesn’t hurt that there’s a solid groove to the track, pushing the pace through to the charming chorus. As of right now, just a one-off single, but let’s hope Luke unleashes more on us this year.

Delightful Pop from Tea Leigh and Luke Reed

It’s been a good amount of time since Tea Leigh and Luke Reed have worked together, but both have kept fairly busy on their own. That being said, their reunion leaves listeners salivating for more. Tea Leigh works her voice carefully into the picture, softly stepping her toes into the pop pool crafted by Reed. There’s this light guitar bit that prominently pokes its head out, before slinking back to let Leigh take her place at the front of the mix, keeping you drifting along. Perhaps the line “it’s never too late, you will return to me” leaves us with a hint that the two will continue their songwriting partnership…we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Another Gem from Plastic Flowers

We’ve been on the Plastic Flowers bandwagon since he first appeared on The Native Sound roster, and his new album looks to have a whole lot of promise. On this brand new tune, he seemingly takes the track into a steady indiepop realm, guitars and drums dancing around another, whilst vocals enter with an airy quality. It then moves into shimmering guitar walls for a good bit before returning to the more playful side of the performance. Infectious, and with depth, Plastic Flowers is on a roll. Absent Forever will be available on November 10th for those interested…which should be all of you.

Another Jam from Surf Rock Is Dead

Not to long ago Surf Rock Is Dead graced our pages, and they’re here again with a brand new track for you to enjoy. Their guitar chords have this distant angular vibe, almost in a more pop-centric darkwave manner. But, the drums and bass give this track a little bounce, allowing for the vocals to playfully rise up and down in the front of the mix. Their We Have No Friends EP will be released by The Native Sound on October 6th, with the B-Side of the vinyl including the band’s first EP to round it out!

Surf Rock Is Dead Impress With New Single

Sometimes when you hear a song, you must instantly share it with others. Such is the case with this new beauty of a number called “As If” from NYC based duo Surf Rock is Dead. It certainly has a POBPAH sound to it with the super bright guitars and overall happy vibe to it. Seriously the song just immediately puts you in a better mood right? Check it out below.

You’ve Got to Jam This New Petite League Tune

It’s going to be hard for Petite League‘s new single not to draw comparisons to the Strokes, but at least it leans towards the early, infectious side of things. This is the sort of song you want to turn up at your next gathering and watch as your friends rambunctiously jump about and trash your home…in a joyous manner, of course. You can’t deny yourself fun, and you won’t want to once you’ve played this track as many times as possible. Plus, it ends with a slight sense of longing, adding a nice little touch to the backside. The Native Sound will release Rips One Into the Night LP on September 1st.

New Music from Sheer

Sheer are back with a brand new EP, and after a few line-up changes, it seems like the band’s brand of pop is going to get a whole lot sweeter. Our first listen is this glorious ballad, coolly floating along with this blissful dream vocal; it’s soothing as it progresses, but just after the 1.30 mark or so, the song takes off for a powerful closing. It’s a nice tease at what’s to come from the band, with their brand new Psychic Quarry EP on the April 28th horizon; look for the release via The Native Sound.

Luke Reed Reissues Won’t Be There

While Luke Reed may not be a household name as of yet, you’ve likely devoured the music he’s helped craft in his other projects, Bent Shapes and Mini Dresses…I know I have. He released Won’t Be There last summer, and now the album’s getting a larger reissue via The Native Sound. It almost sounds like the track will take a folkish turn in the tones during the opening seconds, but Reed soon moves into heavenly pop territory. It reminds me of the quieter side of indiepop, the kind of pop best suited to soothing introverts…or other reflective types. Don’t sleep on this one, please; it hits this Friday.

New Music from Funeral Advantage

You know I’m a sucker for a band with coated vocals and shimmering guitar chords coming through my speakers, so this Funeral Advantage tune steps right in line with my tastes. It sort of reminds me of the later Pains of Being Pure at Heart tunes, pulling in a glimmer of polish to the dreamy indiepop side. Lyrically, its touching on the trials of pulling yourself together after a relationship has fallen apart; it’s one of those that allows you to empathize, as surely we’ve all been there. The Native Sound will release this track on a new limited 12″ coming February 24th.
