The Wooden Birds are making a name for themselves in and out of Austin so you better hurry to The Parish on Thursday night while you can still see them at such a small venue.  Joining the Austinites on the stage are fellow locals The Mercers and Canadian musician Dan Mangan.  Mr. Mangan is touring in support of the U.S. release of his debut LP Nice, Nice, Very Nice which came out last year in Canada.  Latest single from Dan and his band “Road Regrets” can be found below.

Show Review: Islands @ The Parish (7/6)

Many people were over at La Zona Rosa last night grooving to Edward Sharpe, and I get the attraction–there are some good tunes there.  But, for me, it came down to choosing the guy from the Unicorns, not the guy from IMA ROBOT (Edward).  On top of that, I have to admit that its hard to dislike anything Islands do.  Follow the jump for the full review and fancy photos.

Islands @ The Parish (7/6)

Date Tuesday, July 6th
Location Parish
Doors 800p
Tickets $10 HERE

When haven’t we been fans of Islands?  Since the split of his old band, we’ve loved everything Nic Diamonds has done, and Islands is no exception.  They’ll be making their way through town, and as things have been slow as of late, you won’t want to miss this opportunity to catch a great band in our fair city.  You’ll also get a chance to watch Steel Phantoms and Active Child, the opening bands, who have also been building a name for themselves.  So why not go check out this great show? Excatly, you have no reason, so we’ll see you there.

Date Thursday, May 20th
Location The Parish
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 @ the Door

We’ve been playing a lot of the A EP from local group L.A.X, and it’s time that you get your hands on the album yourself.  Luckily for us all, the CD release for the band has finally arrived, and you can find yourself in a hot mess by heading to the Parish this Thursday night.  Expect to find yourself sweaty and smiling by the time you leave, not to mention the fact that you’ll have a brand new disc to spin around the house.  Get there early as you’ll really want to see A2W FreshMillions, as well as Missions. Hope to see you there supporting the local scene.

Austin A2W: Super Lite Bike

Sometimes it’s hard for us to find artists worthy of featured posts on the site since we live in a town completely saturated with new and veteran bands.  It is easy however when we are directed to bands with a unique and compelling sound like Austin boys Super Lite Bike.  Somehow we’ve missed out on these guys since their inception a couple years ago, but we are now on board and driving the band wagon of hype.  The Austin quintet known as Super Lite Bike have previously played in several bands around town with many names and many faces.  With a new name and the search for their own sound, the band is ready to release their debut LP Away We Go later this week.  What you’ll find on that record is what sucked us in from the get go: A band who understands what it means to try something new.  Sure they’ve got the progressive rock label on them, and that’s cool.  You would be wrong however to simply write them off as another “experimental rock” group.  Their style is like nothing else going on in Austin right now… and of course we dig that.  Be sure to pick up your copy of their new album on Thursday at your local record store.

You can also catch these guys live on Thursday at The Parish for their record release party starting at 9pm.  I know we’ll be there!

New Tunes from L.A.X.

For some time local Austin band, L.A.X. have been devoted to making people dance their butts off, including those that caught their energetic set at ACL last year.  Things are looking up for this group, and they’re set to release a new EP, titled the A EP, which will officially see its release at their show on May 20th over at the Parish.  Be sure to catch on to these guys now, and at the very least, you’ll have something sweet to dance to while at work.
