Last Week’s Jams, Today (5.23 – 5.27)

Well, last week was a struggle. End of the school year, for two teachers, and well, then that other thing, so we barely got to the end of the week, let alone hit the musical stride with our usual fervor. So, our end of week wrap-up, which we give you at the beginning, is a little short. But, there’s new jams from great releases like R.E. Seraphin, Why Bonnie or Dehd, plus a rad new track off Hazy Sour Cherry‘s forthcoming LP for Damnably. And hey, you can never go wrong having a Tony Molina tune in there. So, here’s to one foot in front of the other with our favorite jams from last week.

The Shivas Share Doom Revolver

I’m a big Shivas stan over here, though admittedly I’m still waiting for them to recreate the joy of “You Make Me Wanna Die.” Today, the band drop a fresh new burner for Suicide Squeeze‘s Single Series, Pinks and Purples. Slow and jammy, the song evolves into this psychedelic stomp of cool. The maniacal guitars set you up, but eventually fade into this mellower groove where the band’s pop sensibility unfolds with vocal harmonies. But, stick around long enough and they turn the slow burn into a riotous affair around the 1:40 mark; this is just many of the twist and turns the band are taking you on in these four minutes.

After releasing new tune “If I Could Choose” in July, I am now quite excited to share this new single called “Undone”. If you aren’t listening to these new singles and growing anticipation for this new album, you are truly missing out on one of the best forthcoming albums of the year. We love this band.

The Shivas Announce Feels So Good//Feels So Bad

I wonder how some great bands get overlooked, particularly when they seem built for the enjoyment of the masses. The Shivas are one such band, and they’ve always crafted these hook-laden jams, my personal favorite being “You Make Me Wanna Die.” Today, they announce their new record Feels So Good//Feels So Bad, and do so with this swinging number that out their infectious quality on display. At times, it has this natural swinging psychedelic boogie to it, which is definitely tickles the ears; I think they up the ante by adding the emphasis of the vocals, letting the song sort of soar and pop in all the right places. Of course, the band are masters of choruses, and this one here is the best piece little piece of ear candy you’re going to get to chew on today. Fingers crossed this jam and this record put the band in front of more ears; the new LP is out on September 24th via Tender Loving Empire.

The Shivas Are Back with Dark Thoughts

We’ve always been avid supporters of The Shivas throughout the years, so when news comes our way about a new record, you better bet we’re going to be on board. Dark Thoughts is said to be an album of deep reflection, and the latest single was penned by drummer Kristin Leonard, sharing her story of coming to grips with the various aspects that make up her identity (including asshole TMs); she also happens to be the star of this here video. For me, I love how my world’s collide. I’ve been listening to a lot of doc-wop from the 50s/60s as of late, and there’s definitely a nostalgic bent in this song’s sound, though it’s funneled through the very modern production lens. The band have always had that, which is one of the reasons we’ve always found them endearing here at ATH. Dark Thoughts drops on October 25th via Tender Loving Empire.

The Shivas Never Fail

Man it’s always nice when a band you can rely on for quality, no frills rock music puts out new music right before the weekend. Today on of our old favorites The Shivas are dropping said rock tune with this new track “Gloria”. As we’ve come to expect from the band, the track features a great psych rock themed, droning rock number with great guitars and reverb. This band continues to be one of those that everyone should have heard about by now.

The Shivas will release new album Dark Thoughts on October 25th via Tender Loving Empire.

The Shivas Are Back with a New Album

shivaI’ve been on the Shivas train for quite some time, and I’m rather surprised at how quickly they’ve returned considering they were just rocking their last album less than a year ago. This track, however, might catch a few off-guard, offering a smooth Western-tinged ballad that brims with soulful vocals. Sure, lacking in the punch and hooks they’ve offered before, but the song builds in such a way that it’s hard for listeners to turn this thing off. It’s a song of maturity and growth, giving us a glimmer of what we should expect on the band’s new LP, Better Off Dead, which is being released on February 9th via K Records.

Here’s the Next Guantanamo Baywatch Single

gbI have an inkling that it’s going to be a really good year for the trio that is Guantanamo Baywatch.  They had a really good buzz both before and after SXSW, and the more we hear from their forthcoming album, the more we here at ATH are falling in love.  Their latest track has the band falling in line with like-minded artists the Shivas or Shannon and the Clams; the bands all have a knack for blending elements of garage rock with the purity of doo-wop.  It’s the sort of tunes you’d play to let your folks get hip to your good tastes.  Look for Darling…It’s Too Late, their latest, on May 12th by way of Suicide Squeeze.
