The Softies Share Tiny Flame

Today is chock full of absolutely great songs, but let’s not forget that our best bit of pop might be brewing with this new single from The Softies. They haven’t seemed to skip a beat from their heyday, perfecting their songwriting as they completely dive into shared vocals and unified guitar work. And, considering their one of the great pop bands, period, they draw from the classic trope of detailing a lost love to the listener, a timeless nod to their timeless sound. Their return continues to bud with the promise of great pop for tomorrow; they’ll released The Bed I Made on August 23rd via Father Daughter Records/Lost Sound Tapes.

Last Week’s Jams (7.8 – 7.12)

After a brief vacation, I apparently over-indulged while RayRay was out on the town, hitting up nearly 30+ songs, and some of those, like the premiere we ran for legendary Refrigerator, aren’t even on streaming platforms, so you have to go find em’ on the site! Austin had a big week, with acts like Club Coma, Liz Burrito, Voxtrot, Font and Letting Up Despite Great Faults throwing out some new jams. But, don’t think San Francisco/Oakland were game for being overshadowed, with Tony Jay, Sad Eyed Beatniks, Chime School, Fake Fruit and Parallel all dropping new jams. So, this is nearly 2 hours of really really great music, so sit back, press play, and escape the madness, albeit for a brief moment.

The Softies Share California Highway 99

This beautiful new track from the Softies ran yesterday afternoon at all the cool spots, but admittedly, I generally only work between 8-10 am CST, so I missed it. But, like all of you, I’ve been over the moon to hear that the Softies are returning to recorded material with their new album, The Bed I Made. They’ve shared this charming video created by Katie Marks, who said the video was meant to capture the duo’s “friendship beyond the music.” I’m just reveling in their rare ability to draw a fickle listener like me completely into a tune without evening adding conventional percussion. All your friends are going to buy the record from Father/Daughter when it drops on August 23rd.

Obligatory Softies Post

It’s already all over the Internet, but the Softies are back! They’ve brought out their magical charms that have made them one of the most revered indiepop acts. Just watching this video, seeing the interplay between Jen and Rose brings back all the feelings you missed over the last 20 plus years…unless you grabbed that split Tony Molina cassette! We don’t even need to wax poetically here, as there’s not much more to say that hasn’t been said about the duo. That said, I’m super happy to hear new stuff, and look forward to grabbing a copy of The Bed I Made, out in August via Father/Daughter Records.

Jetstream Pony Cover the Softies for KUS

I’m not one to typically write about cover songs, unless, of course, it comes via one of my current favorites covering one of my all time favorites. The Softies gave us the writing Jen and Rose, and now they’re being covered by Jetstream Pony. This song will appear on the Kleine Untergrund SchallplattenLabel Compilation, compiling tracks from the label’s very stable roster…both Jetstream and KUS were in our Best of Indiepop list. This version has a slightly noisier bent than the original, though they still include those wondrous harmonies. the rest of the compilation includes other ATH faves like the Pale Lights and the BVs, so grab one HERE.
