Peel Dream Magazine Offer Central Park West Video

As we’ve gone through the album cycle for the forthcoming Peel Dream Magazine LP, I’ve admittedly been on board, though knowing that those early singles were treading water in the band’s past. But, that stops now, with this airy new single that shifts the sound into something a little bit more ornate, almost theatrical in nature. Honestly, and perhaps I’m a bit jaded, but it feels like something one would claim as Sufjan adjacent, even down to the instrumentation and accompaniment…and while that might seem like a knock, there’s a brightness that turns in at 2:15 where the track gets an energetic lift to tether it to the earlier singles out there. Rose Main Reading Room is out on September 4th via Topshelf Records.

Another Peel Dream Magazine Tune

As much as we knew what to expect in the early work of Peel Dream Magazine, it seems that Joe Stevens work on the newest LP did see him branching out in new directions, or at least letting other folks join in on the fun, like the partnered vocals that run the course through this song and its accompanying video. Musically, it’s still all about bending in those corners of psychedelia into a pop-centric vibe that works around studio-beat-magic and vibrant melodies. Personally, the chorus is the sweet spot on this tune, offering an almost toying melody, teasing you without going full on into the realms of cliche bedroom pop. Rose Main Reading Room is out September 4th via Topshelf.

Peel Dream Magazine Shares Lie in the Gutter

After several albums for the ATH heralded Slumberland Records, Peel Dream Magazine are moving over to Topshelf Records for their new LP. Today we get this delicious little tune that’s going to be hard not to fawn over. Joseph gives up the vocal duties on this one, and the rolling pulse of the synths/keys definitely is going to have folks pulling out their “sounds like Stereolab” cards. You can certainly hear where the roots of the project have evolved into a more openly pop structure, thus capable of seducing even the hardest to please indie fans; I can certainly see where folks who love Broadcast or Dummy might find this as a nice intersection if they were unfamiliar with the band. There’s a bunch of tour dates too, so hopefully we’ll get to hear a lot from the forthcoming Rose Main Reading Room, out September 4th.

Gulfer Return With Too Slow

After a stellar pandemic release with their self-titled LP in 2020, Montreal based Gulfer didn’t release a whole lot of music over the last few years. Other than a random single hear and there, the band was mostly quiet. Last November though showed a strong return for the band with one of my favorite songs of last year “Clean.” This year looks to be a strong return to form for Gulfer with a whole new album, which will feature this banging new single “Too Slow.” It serves as a heavier sound than what we might be used to from the Canadians and serve us all notice that they are back and stronger than ever.

Gulfer’s third album Third World is out on February 28th and is available for pre-order now via Topshelf Records.

Stream New Album From Subsonic Eye

As we ease into another long awaited Friday, I suggest you take some time today to enjoy this new album entitled All Around You from the Singapore based outfit Subsonic Eye. Previously we shared with you the banger of a single “J-O-B,” which should’ve offered just a small tease of what was to come for their 10 song LP.  For me, it’s a gem of a collection with an expert portrayal of what indie pop used to represent while still sounding fresh and invigorating.  Please do check this one out.

If you’re feeling these tunes, the band has several physical purchase options over on bandcamp coming to you from the stellar US label Topshelf Records

Sheer Beauty From No Vacation

Hey now and happy Tuesday! Recent Brooklyn by way of San Francsisco transplant, No Vacation, has been building up a lot of buzz over the last few years with their whimsical, light and dreamy sound. This year the band plans to release a new EP entitled Phasing which is sure to yet again please the ever growing fan base. Prior to the October release date for the extended player, the band just dropped this new single “Estrangers”. It is another stellar entry in the band’s catalog which is helping to establish them as one of the best dream pop bands around.

Phasing will be released on October 18th via Topshelf Records.

A little Something Different From Bellows

As I peruse some emails and the internet for new tunes to share, I came across this unique piece from Brooklyn based artist Bellows. It’s a bedroom pop piece blended well with songwriter elements similar to Sufjan or my old pal John Lamonica. You’ll even find some electronic elements along with some crazy wind instrumentation. This one really manages to blend a ton of genres to create a truly special pop sound.

Bellows will release new album The Rose Gardener on February 22nd via Topshelf Records.

Love This New Song From Doe

It’s another blistering day here in Austin, TX and I need some music to inspire me through the next two days before the weekend. Helping with my “it’s only Thursday?” blues is this new track “Labour Like I Do” from London up and comers Doe. Many listeners will be reminded of bands like The Breeders but with a more modern, fleshed out indie sound. In the end, it’s a beautifully constructed rock song.

Doe will release new album Grow Into It on September 28th via Topshelf Records.

Nice Guitar Pop From Clearance

A quick search on the ATH will show only a single post from several years ago about Chicago based band Clearance. All that really means is I don’t know a whole lot about the band and can allow myself to listen to each song with fresh ears. Impressing my critical ear today is this fresh new piece of work called “Haven’t You Got the Time?”. Immediately one can compare this to something straight out of the 60s pop genre if you blended it with a few parts of more recent indie bands like Foreign Born or Fruit Bats. I’m thinking this will begin a whole slew of posts on our website featuring Clearance.

This track appears on new album At Your Leisure due out July 27th via Top Shelf Records.

New Hit from Pema

It’s Friday folks. It’s early and you needed to pick it up. Well, I figured you could listen to this new hit from our friend Alex, who currently is working under her Pema moniker (she’s also in Austin group Alex Napping). There’s this pulse that brings the song in, with extemporaneous beeps and bloops layered in to maximize the hook factor. I love the way Alex plays with the syllables in her vocal delivery in the song’s late middle, before putting in a final stomp to groove you to the end. Pema will release Bad Habits on May 4th via Topshelf Records.
