Last Week’s Jams (3.27 – 3.31)

For some reason I felt like we were nursing a SXSW hangover, just a week later than normal. But, in all that, still found tons of great tunes to write about and share. Good to see personal faves like Lachlan Denton and Greg Mendez popping up (with that Greg tune getting tons of love), plus some videos from the likes of Low Praise and 7ebra gave us a chance to revisit some singles we’d been keeping an eye on. Also, some local love for Troller and Houston’s Alien Eyelid, so trying to keep it Texas ya’ll. Stream on!

Troller Share New Single + Video

Personally, Troller is one of my favorite ATX bands, as they continue to evolve their sound, elevating their heavy electronic sound into something more broad and experiential. This brand new track from their forthcoming LP is doing that, quickly building a foundation that unfolds and blossoms for the listener as the track progresses. This song unfolds, then turns left, unfolds further, then turns back on itself, like the song’s alive, taking shape on its own terms. Definitely a song that has my interest as I get prepared for the release of Drain, which comes out on March 26th via Relapse Records.

Show Pics: The Soft Moon @ Barracuda (4/20)

This show was immediately on the gotta-go list, The Soft Moon with Boy Harsher? Yes. I know both were about during SxSW, but I wanted full sets and the stars never aligned to allow for viewing freeing time slots for other acts from overseas. Double win. When you add in local openers Troller, you have a show that has great potential to sell out Barracuda.

…and sell out it did.

I’ll share a few thoughts about each of the band’s sets and plenty of photos right after the jump. Sound good? OK.

Check the New Troller Video

holodeckI won’t lie to you; I completely should have been on the ball giving more love to Troller. Their one of the great bands in Holodeck‘s stable, bringing some of the most interesting electronic music in town to the masses. Troller just released Graphic, which is a darkened collection of lush synth-pop tracks, including this standout, “Storm Maker.” The video matches the feeling of the song, unfolding various images as the vocals dance around in the atmosphere. If you’re smart, you’ll get your hands on the LP right away.

Chaos in Tejas Pick: DIIV @ Mohawk

DIIV Whiner

Date 5/30/13
Location Mohawk
Doors 7pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

Chaos in Tejas is here and the little festival that could has some nice lineups to choose with starting out this evening.  An ATH approved pick for the evening would have to be the headlining DIIV show at Mohawk (despite their whiney behavior during SXSW).  The remainder of the lineup is also solid with Deep Time and SURVIVE on the outside stage and Troller, ((Pressures)), and Phantom Lakes inside.  Start the weekend off right with some great indie pop music.

Show Preview: Cate Le Bon @ Red 7 (9.29)

Date Saturday, September 29th
Location Red 7
Doors 900 PM
Tickets $10 from Transmission

For those of you fortunate enough to have caught St. Vincent last year at ACL Live, I hope you caught the beautiful songstress that is Cate Le Bon.  Personally, the Welsh musician enthralled me more than the headliner, but that’s just personal taste.  I’ve since been able to enjoy her CYRK album, and the CYRK II piece that accompanied it.  Although she I last caught her standing solo on stage, her presence was much larger, encouraging me to write the praise that I leave you with now.  Get there early to catch Troller, the opening act, who will help set the tone for the evening.

Show Preview: Pure X @ Red Seven (4/6)

Date Friday, April 6th
Location Red 7
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from Transmission

If you’re not going out of town to be with family for Easter, then you’re in good shape, as there’s some great local music going on all weekend long in Austin.  The first set that caught my eye was Friday’s show over at Red 7 featuring Pure X.  Personally, I thought their album, Pleasure, from last year was one of the best things coming out of town.  And, the few times I’ve seen them, they’ve definitely impressed me with their ability to pull that stuff off live.  Opening acts for the evening will be Troller and God’s Gun.  So, if you’re looking for good tunes Friday, make your way over to Red 7 friends!
