Last Week’s Jams (5.27 – 5.31)

In one of those weeks that magically felt longer than it was, we managed to cover a fair amount of ground, cranking out coverage of at least 20 new tunes for you. Add to that B. Gray’s excellent Kilby Block Party footage and the Levitation Announcement, and, well, we seem like we have our shit together! I loved that there was new stuff from Ryli and Autocamper, both giving me little doses of my pop fix. There was a lot of new stuff, too, that scratched a different itch, with Fortunato Durutti Marinetti announcing a new LP, coinciding with a fresh track from the new Tropical Fuck Storm LP. A bit all over the map, but in the best way. Let us know what you loved the most.

Tropical Fuck Storm Offer Teeth Marche

One of my favorite things about doing what I do here on ATH is being punched in the face by my own expectations. You think you know a band, you think you know what you’re getting when you press play, but then you get a band like Tropical Fuck Storm who just say “fuck you” and created art in the best way, just because it feel right. Their earlier singles from the forthcoming Fairyland Codex have mostly featured Gareth on vocals, delivering their sort of post-art-punk sound, matching his rhythmic delivery. “Teeth March,” on the other hand, has this natural unfurling, with these light guitar notes that feel like a red carpet being rolled out for singer Erica Dunn to present her storytelling. In that, there’s this little hip-shaking swagger lurking beneath, with a complete breakdown twisting the plot just a wee bit in the midst of the beautiful madness. Please grab a copy of Fairyland Codex on its June 29th release date, courtesy of Fire Records. And, they’ve got a few US dates at the end of June, including an ATX show at the Ballroom, so be on the lookout!

Last Week’s Jams (2.17 – 2.21)

Even with Presidents Day offering a slow musical roll, we covered a ton of music last week, at least in our brains. There were some standout tunes from the likes of Triathalon, Now and Scrounge…but also got to hear from one of our old favorites, Pia Fraus. We started to dip our toes back into the SXSW scene, with RayRay grabbing an interview from Gold Star. Then we made sure to rep our friends in Keeled Scales, who had a big week with new Will Johnson and Emily Hines. You’ll get to hear some off the beaten path post-punk from Private Lives and Low Monroe. Speaking of the Low Monroe tune, it’s strange that the two longest tracks on the playlist are both Aussies (the other from Tropical Fuck Storm), and they’re both labeled to have an identical running time. Who knows what that’s about. Press play below.

Tropical Fuck Storm Share Goon Show + Sign to Fire Records

Seems as good a day as any to spend some times overseas with Aussie outfits, and here we are again with Melbourne’s Tropical Fuck Storm. The band have just announced their singing to Fire Records, along with a slew of tour dates and a brand new single. Gareth Liddiard vocals in the first half of the song set the tone, his voice marching to the thump of the percussion, intermittently offset by the backing chorus of Fiona and Erica for angelic contrast. Liddiard seems to be stomping out his notes, hitting metronomic stride as he delivers a world-weary viewpoint for this “golden age of assholes.” Those familiar with the group’s performances might also be curious as to the pop accessibility of the tune, but worry not, your moment comes in the tune’s latter half, as they offer up a barrage of noise and left-turns. Keep an eye out for the band as they make their way Stateside in June/July.

Poison City Records Announce A Collection of Songs from Palm Springs

Whoa whoa whoa! Don’t get confused…we’re not talking about Palm Springs, California, but rather the songwriting project of Melbourne’s Erica Dunn, who also plays in Mod Con and Tropical Fuck Storm. Poison City Records just announced they’ll be releasing A Collection of Songs, which compiles out of stock 7″ and early tape releases that are probably pretty hard to find over here in the States. Just wanted to give you all a little sample of Dunn’s work, and by jumping into this introduction maybe entice you to go back and listen to her work. I chose this single as it’s got this striking bravado balanced with Erica’s powerful vocals, so it comes off as brave and angelic, ultimately just striking the listener in the face! A Collection of Songs will be out on December 10th.

Top 12 Albums of 2019…According to Marc from the Midgetmen

Austin punks the Midgetmen are an Austin staple, and have been for quite some time. Thus, we’ve befriended Marc through the years of seeing them at shows and all that. He’s joined up in in our efforts to get some insight into year end lists the nontraditional way. Here’s a few words from Marc. Also, and it should definitely be mentioned; he’s a huge TGI Fridays supporter; I once watched him down slider after slider topped off with potato skins at a SXSW party…sponsored by TGI Fridays.

Marc: As it turns out, I happen to like beverages that come in 12 packs… and I happened to have exactly 12 albums that stood out to me this year. I actually had a lot of trouble cutting the list down from 20 –> 10, which is how I wound up at 12.

These 12 will certainly be in permanent rotation whereas the remaining 8 I wasn’t quite as sure about. (Which is not to say that remaining 8 aren’t great. Neil Young was in that 8!)
Thanks again for letting me give you a list of things that most people will ignore!
