Another Single from Cameron Sonnier

The last time we heard from Cameron Sonnier, I was finding him as sort of a cross between Eels and Coma Cinema, but with the latest single, it feels like he’s stretching the sound beyond even my expectations. This new single works on various levels, with various elements and textures being layered to create this sort of warped bit of of personal folk. Some of those elements create this sort of sonic shattering, like thunderclaps echoing behind Sonnier’s matter-of-fact delivery here. It’s a different twist, offering a glimpse of what’s to come later this year when Cameron finally unleashed his album, Tunnels.

Cameron Sonnier Shares Sunshine

I never really moved on from sweepingly dramatic pop music, which is why the craft of Cameron Sonnier really hits home…that and he’s from Houston, which ain’t too far away. This track drops into the hook zone immediately with the beat working beneath the jangling strum; delivering the first lines of “champagne/cocaine/magazine/I can give you anything you need,” immediately ups the ante, opening the door for this broad melody. In the production you can hear these little washes of atmospheric synths, texturing the world that Cameron’s created. This is our first listen to the work he’s composed for his forthcoming debut, Tunnels, expected to hit later this year.

Weakened Friends Share Tunnels Lyric Video

With Weakened Friends new record Quitter on the horizon in a few weeks, I just can’t get enough of the band’s new single; I’m pretty sure I’m responsible for half the plays today alone. I hate to use the cliche language of timelessness, but everything about this track is just the perfect dose of pop rock, seeming like it might just be one of the best jams to come out this year. There’s something about Sonia’s delivery of her vocals that’s effortlessly distinctive; it seems biting yet somehow punches you with this melodic hook. I mean, I dare you turn away from this chorus and not fall absolutely in love. This is how all pop rock should be written. Definitely ready to be the old guy at the show full of youngsters screaming along at the top of their lungs to this jam! Quitter is out November 19th via Don Giovanni/Big Scary Monsters.

The IT Department – v1.0

The trial run went well enough that the IT Department is going into production. Version 1.0 will include some have-to listens, our first repeat guest, some darkwave, a new to me artist and *gasp* a remix or two. People that know me know I hate remixes, so you may not gasp, but I know a few out there will.

Past the break you will tracks from M83, Tunnels, Active Child, Walls (kind of) and more.

So welcome to the next step, welcome to the IT Department V1.0.
