Ty Segall Shares My Best Friend
I’ll be the first to admit, that I’ve grown bored of Ty Segall over the last five years; he’s been a constant in the music scene, and at a certain point, I always wonder…what else is there? That’s not to say he’s not had great live shows; he’s like Thee Oh Sees in that manner…folks can never seem to get enough. That said, this new single from the forthcoming Three Bells does hold some intrigue and may entice me to get into the new LP. It’s got this sort of off-kilter, walking-the-guitar sort of craft to it; it feels like something out of the British art-pop scene a la Cate Le Bon. I love how he still breaks down into a jam, but even this feels muted and intimate, all the while the drums roll along in thunderous fashion. Ok Ty…I’m back in. Three Bells drops on January 26th via Drag City.
I left my day job early to go get in on the action at Levitation 2023, heading out to the Far Out Lounge to catch a handful of great guitar acts from the 90s take the stage; it was there where I was greeted with a reminder of what a nightmare festival pricing can be. Let’s be real, a $13 Miller Lite draft? $20 parking when there are no other options in proximity? I mean, I get overhead, and a convenience fee, but for real, fuck that. Shitty decision making out there, and kind of soured me in the setting. Don’t even get me started on one food option, and it being outside the venue.

Honestly, I’m pretty over lists at this point. They’re arbitrary and don’t really reflect anything but someone’s tastes, except here where they reflect the tastes of three individuals…because that’s how we roll. So, take this list with a grain of salt. These are the records we thought were the best, which mostly just means these are the ones we listened to on repeat throughout the year! Sometimes I think Ty Segall is too prolific for his own good, but when he’s joining up with Tim Presley aka White Fence, I can definitely get behind that. This track almost sounds like it’s acoustic punk filled with furious strumming, but you can hear the influence of Presley, particularly in the very post-punk yelps and the delivery of the first chorus. Don’t worry, you get a Ty-esque solo in the last seconds of the song, just to whet your appetite. Together, Ty Segall and White Fence will release Joy on July 20th via
