Skirts Announce Debut Album for Double Double Whammy

Just a few hours North of us here in Austin, you’ll find Skirts, the project led by songwriter Alex Montenegro. Interestingly, while I can see Alex’s approach fitting into a scene with acts like labelmate Lomelda, her sound also seems rooted in North Texas sounds. The guitar work has this quiet feel, but a close ear hears it brimming with this fullness, this weighted sound that’s huge, reminding me of Bedhead, in a sense. All this to say, there’s the perfect contrast between Montenegro’s crisp crystalline voice and the brooding nature of the guitar work throughout, all of it fitting perfectly into this grainy family footage video. The band will be releasing their debut Great Big Wild Oak via Double Double Whammy on July 30th.

Justus Proffit Shares New Single, Burning the Ground

Over the last few years, we’ve managed to get lots of coverage up on LA’s Justus Proffit, so I’m going to take sole responsibility for his signing to Bar None Records (that’s how it works right?); he’s also recorded an EP with Jay Som, so maybe it wasn’t ALL me. Alas, there’s now a really strong slowcore ballad for you to enjoy, with hints at a new record, plus an accompanying video to boot. The song’s got hints of Elliott Smith, as I’ve said before, where there are moments that Proffit’s voice feels like little more than a whisper worked over carefully crafted guitar lines. He’s begging you to come sit with him, let him share his stories with you. There’s something about his song that haunt you, something that just seems to get absorbed by your soul as you press play.

Robbie & Mona Share Slow Club LUV Visual

Folks were dropping albums off left and right at the beginning of the year, so I think the latest album from Robbie & Mona might have slipped under my radar. But, now that the band have released a video for Slow Club LUV, gives me reason to go back and share the song with you, maybe even encourage you to give Ew a listen! I love the way the duo use these little miniscule effects to add in some atmosphere, almost like the song’s about to shatter your speakers, only to return to seduce you with their delightfully melodic bedroom pop. Go on, give a listen.

Carpet Burn Share Butterfinger Hands

First, let there be fair warning for US audiences, as this song is not at all about the heralded Butterfinger snack. But, Carpet Burn, a new act led by Kayley Langdon and Tam Richards-Matlakowski is rather paying homage to how we all let things slip out of our hands, both literally and figuratively. The song is this pseudo-psych pop that creeps in along Kayley’s synth work, almost like a pop horror score; the wonky bounce helps set up the falling vocal delivery that seems to tumble down to the ground…like any object would if you indeed did have ‘butterfinger hands.” Plus, the song wraps up with a great noisy freakout that’s sure to set fire to your soul. The band will release their I Can’t Believe It’s Not Carpet Burn EP on June 18th via Spoilsport Records.

American Culture Share 1972 Video

If you haven’t gotten on board with For My Animals, the latest collection of bops from American Culture, then perhaps this song can be the one to entice you. The undercurrent of this song is definitely a propulsive groove; it sounds like its got bits of kraut and prog all wound into its own version of dream pop. On my end, the track has this sort of everything but nothing feel; you feel like you’ve heard that note or that sound, and yet it seems totally new and unearthed. I love how the video’s wash of the live footage seamlessly moves you into the accompanying underwater visuals. If you’re looking for something that’s an amalgam of all your favorite sounds, it might be lurking here below! For My Animals is out now via HHBTM!

Skydeck Drop Dogshot Video

If you’re into the Aussie scene and you follow bands like Ciggie Witch or Pregnancy, well, this new tune from Skydeck sounds nothing like that. But, it does features members of the band, though they’re offering up more of a darkened dance pop for your ears. The tune has this heavy punch on the synth lines, giving you this head-bobbing beat as the vocal delivery operates in between the notes. There’s this slight little set-up for the chorus that offers glimmers of jangling guitar pop, albeit super brief. It all sets things up for this infectious dancefloor-ready hit, waiting for you to punch-dance your way onto the floor. The group drop their new Coupon LP on August 27th via Dinosaur City/Osborne Again/KingfisherBluez.

Semihelix Share Recoil Video

I’m hoping that Austin puts Semihelix on the map this year, as the band’s work is one of the more enjoyable sounds I’ve heard coming from the city this year. I love the way the jangling guitars erupt into a sort of hazy shuffle, kind of like watching clouds move in fast motion as they roll over some desert horizon. You’ll also be into some of the shoegaze-ish elements, the distorted guitars that build walls in the background, and then its all thrown in with Geannie Friedman’s solid vocal work, and we’ve got this billowing dream pop heavy hitter you’re going to want in rotation. They’ll be dropping their debut later this summer via Mariel Recording Company.

Always You Announce Bloom Off The Rose

We couldn’t be more excited for the debut album from Always You, the new band featuring the Hochheim brothers (Ablebody, PoBPaH, etc). We’ve heard a few of the hits coming from the debut album, but today that all comes together with an official announcement and release date! I love the twinkling synths and guitar working over that bubbling rhythm section from the get-go; it sets up the mood to play just on the edge of dance-worthy. That pulse works great to set up the creative croon of the vocals, with added bonus points going to the light backing vocals that work their way into this tune during the chorus. Interestingly, the song, while maintaining this great feathery pop quality seems to hang out on the edge of the dance floor; it sort of toys with you, unsure if you’re tapping your toes or grabbing your bestie and flailing about. Bloom Off the Rose drops on July 16th via Shelflife and Discos de Kirlian.

Alexalone Announce Debut for Polyvinyl Records, Alexaloneworld

Alex Petereson has been a fixture in the Austin music scene for some time, whether playing in Lomedla or helming their own band. Now, that band, Alexalone, has made the big-time, signing on with Polyvinyl Records to release their new LP Alexaloneworld. The lead single for the announcement comes with an incredible video designed by Simon Cassar and Karolina Asadova; it’s got the old school video game vibe on lock. Musically, the song’s a slow burn, carefully textured with light percussion and soft vocals as the track builds layer upon layer, letting guitars twist and turn, all of it culminating in this sensational guitar breakdown in the song’s late moments. That final eruption serves as a reminder that we’re in for some special treats when Alexaloneworld drops on August 13th.

Also, we must cop to releasing a tape by one of the drummer’s project the Hermits. All hail Sam!

Qlowski Share Folk Song

Please don’t let the song title disguise the hit that lurks below, as “Folk Song” is far from what is likely in your mind. Qlowski use a brooding bass line and pounding back beat to build the backdrop of the song, carefully constructing a natural tension capable of layered textures. I love the frantic vocal delivery, curved at the end of the notes to emanate just a bit of melodic emotion, reminding me a bit of Tim Darcy of Ought. But, the band have this knack of feeding you the nuggets you need to keep you interested, but then meandering off on their own sort of post-pun agenda, like they do through the course of this song’s middle all before switching the song’s narrator on you! Fuck, this sounds like Joy Division grew up! You want it! Quale Futuro is out June 4th via Maple Death/Feel It Records.
