Order of the Toad Share Britons Marrakech

I’ll be honest, having been at the blog game for over 10 years now, sometimes sounds just get boring…so lately I’ve been looking for folks to do a little more, to stretch their sound (as if what I said matters). Luckily, our friend Robert Sotelo reached out to let us know that another project he was involved with, Order of the Toad, had a new release coming our way. So, here we are, with a new single and a sound that sounds like everything you’ve heard and yet nothing you can place. “Brintons Marrakech” has these little psychedelic guitar stabs, though there’s a sort of garage pop/60s girl group attitude layered in with the vocals; it all kind of slinks along, creeping artfully around every corner…tossing in an emphatic punch when needed. You want to be cool? This is what true cool sounds like. Re-Order of the Toad is available today via Gringo and Reckless Yes.

Alex Maas Announces Solo LP

I feel like many folks listening to the Black Angels all these years will be quite taken aback by Alex Maas‘ solo work, and while I love BA, I think I might even love this better. It has this nostalgic pop sound, the sort that filled every room of my home as a child (thanks Dad!). There’s still this sort of foreboding in his vocals, and perhaps in some of the lyrical content of this particular track, though the music definitely seems uplifting. Every moment here feels like its being painted with these huge sweeping brush strokes, leaving classic pop sensibility on the sonic canvas. Pretty powerful stuff. Luca is out on December 4th via Innovative Leisure.

Gustaf Sign to Royal Mountain Records

Up until now, it seems that new brand of post-punk has been sensationalized and dominated by boy bands (Shame, Fontaines DC, Idles, etc)…and all that’s well and good, but I’m glad that Gustaf is here to throw a wrench in that whole push. The New York outfit has much more of a pop sensibility about their work, which is owed to the rhythm section; it definitely has that Entertainment nod when those riffs come cutting into the song’s core…followed by that call and response vocal closing. Honestly, I love how refreshing this sounds; it doesn’t sound formulaic or like a costume, and I love that about it. The band celebrate this rad tune by signing with Royal Mountain Records; they’ll drop a 7″ on December 4th.

Mdou Moctar Signs with Matador Records

If you browsed through some of the more reputable end of year lists in 2019, I hope you caught Ilana: the Creator in some of those, as Mdou Moctar left us with a release that have very few peers in the grand scheme of things. Today, the Tuareg guitarist celebrates signing to Matador Records by sharing a brand new single, which should appear on a brand new LP slated for next year. The skill set in guitar work is phenomenal; its what I imagine folks who like King Gizzard would enjoy if they had less boring tastes. Mdou explains how the song is about how we lose ourselves in the midst of relationships, allowing envy and jealousy to control our lives; he hopes the he does not succumb to such a way of being. Just check this fire!

Being Dead Share Underworld Video

If you live near the sputtering death throes of Austin’s music scene (thanks Adler!) you’ve certainly heard of Being Dead; they’ve been one of the most heralded acts of the last few years due to their incredible live performances and secretly hook-laden songs. In fact, a year or so ago, our ATH Records label helped them press some songs to hot wax for the Fame Money Death by Drive-By EP. Well, because great songs and great ideas never die, the band just recently dropped a video for “Underworld,” and its begging your attention this morning. You get a little pop genius as well as the band’s sense of humor in the midst of these dark times. Enjoy this treat…and maybe grab one of the last few copies HERE. Feeling like I could really go for a burger right about now!

Acting Strange Share Did You Think

Been a minute since we’ve heard from Glasgow’s Acting Strange, but I’m definitely all over their latest single. At first, it looks back on Arab Strap, albeit in a somewhat poppier sense; it doesn’t sound as drenched in ale as the aforementioned act. As I listen on repeat a few times through, those pop bits seems to actually bubble to the surface, bursting with joy as they hit my ear. Plus, there’s this playful piano that closes out the tune over some fuzzed out electronic notes and a faint whistle, and I just love love love it. No word on if there’s a new LP to follow up Talk Talk Talk, but I’ll take this whatever the case!

Helena Deland Shares Pale Video

Unless you’ve been hiding in a whole the last few months, or maybe the last few years, you’re likely aware that the forthcoming Helena Deland is highly anticipated. I’ve been on board, but what I’m pleasantly surprised by on this one is the diversity when thrown in contrast to the other singles from the album cycle. This one seems to have peeled back the banana peel of dream pop, revealing a more playful, almost childlike, Deland, providing more of an immediate impact to the listener as opposed to stretching those melodies out. Don’t get me wrong, there are still a few bits of that ethereal pop stretch, but I think its a nice move to step away and give us a glimpse at a little something different. As if my needs mattered here. Someone New is out next Friday via Luminelle.

Fixtures Drop Video for Five Ft One Six Ft Ten

Some labels are always going to find you the good stuff, and I don’t ever mind turning to Bobo Integral for that good good. The latest signing from the label is Brooklyn based Fixtures, who dropped this rad new track last Friday as we were singing off for the weekend. Immediately the song rushes in with this bounding pace and hook-laden rhythm section; the vocals carry this post-punk swaggering croon. They throw in a nice little ramshackle jam in the midst of the tune, bringing in this little stylistic flare that gives a nice little mixture of sounds to the track. You’re going to want to keep an eye on this band; their new Weak Automatic EP drops on December 3rd!

Luke Rathborne Shares Be the One Video

Feel like I was kind of hitting too much on the post-punk note, so its great to have this Luke Rathborne tune to get in on over here. There was just something simple, something that just seemed to come together perfectly here. Perhaps it was the perfect melody, perhaps the song’s execution, but every time I press play, I end up tapping my toes, trying to learn the words so that I can sing along. I love Rathborne’s performance on the chorus too, just pure pop genius and definitely fitting for a Friday afternoon cruise into the sunset. Turn it up folks, you won’t regret it.

Wicketkeeper Share Thunderous New Single

Wicketkeeper hadn’t been on my radar until they united with one of my favorite labels, Meritorio Records, for their new Shonk LP. It was a good discovery, as I was able to go back and enjoy the band’s early EPs too…equally as awesome. But this new single my friends, this is what you need in your life. Jumping in immediately with infectious rhythm and swirling noise, I couldn’t pull myself away from the stereo. It’s this huge wall of sound that opens up the door perfectly for the softened melodic vocals, sitting like a boat in the storm as riffs crash and drums pound all around. Shonk will drop on October 16th. Excuse me while I go punch dance around my living room.
