Gordon Koang Announces Unity

Admittedly, I wasn’t entirely aware of Gordon Koang until earlier last year when Music in Exile began to work with him in Australia while he sought to secure permanent residence. Today he announces his new 11th studio album, Unity, doing so with the release of “Tiel e Nei NYwal Ke Ran (We Don’t Have a Problem with Anyone).” He crafts the song using his own modified string instrument, combing his voice with the strummed notes and dripping them atop the percussive element. What’s drawn me to Gordon is the positivity in his voice; it seems like its always been there, even as he’s fought to find a permanent home outside of his native Sudan the last six years. Give a listen; it drops on August 14th.

Corasandel Share Cracked Light

I’m not sure how familiar you are with Corasandel at this point in your life, but I assure you, as I’ve done in the past, this band is simply brilliant. Today I’m really happy to share a brand new tune from the band, being released as a digital single by the ATH revered Shelflife. The band are categorized under ambient-shoegaze, and I can see those elements here, but I also feel like they’ve also begun to blend into slight bits of post-rock and slowcore; it doesn’t really matter because you can’t pull yourself away. It does open up crafting an ambiance, mild notes floating on top the mix. Soon, feathery vocals enter the fray, soon joined by these thunderous drums; there was a moment around the 1 minute mark where I felt like the world stopped; I saw myself spinning in some cliche space moment. I love how the sonic arrangements begin to push the sound just as the vocals do; the song, in its own fashion is filled with this urgency that bursts forth into this elegant soundscape that closes the song. The single’s out officially on June 26th!

Photo Ops Announce Pure at Heart

Always one of our favorite local Austin labels, Western Vinyl have just added Photo Ops to their roster…and announced the release of Pure at Heart. Terry Price is the songwriter behind the project, originally from Texas, he’s bounced his way through Nashville and now on to LA. “Play On” is an optimistic and energetic tune, an ode to what Price calls “the power pop side of my vision for the record.” It definitely has that natural bounce to it, and the thematic view is that despite the “strange times” we can kind of push forward and hopefully find some positivity on the horizon; its okay to feel shitty, but with music we get a little bit of light…so I hope. Pure at Heart is out on September 18th.

Dehd Drop Flood Video

Dehd are just so hot right now! Those of you that were super into the band’s debut Water will still enjoy the simplistic approach to their craft. But, as we continue to hear more from Flower of Devotion, that sound has branched out, broadened at the mouth of their musical river. There’s this surfy dreaminess to the guitars this round, though there still feels like there’s plenty of space for the song to move about, allowing Emily to come in with one an incredibly strong performance of her own. She toys with the listener just a bit, quivering with some notes, almost distorting the delivery of the song’s title “flood,” but I couldn’t help other than to feel drawn in, enamored with the tones of her voice as guitars buzzed and nipped at my ears. Flower of Devotion is out on July 17th via Fire Talk.

Rules Share Video for Terry

First, I’m really really into what Finnish outfit Rules are doing at the moment. They’re crafting these undeniably catch pop tunes, built around heavy synth work and melodic vocals you can’t hide from. Sure, tons of folks are doing that at the moment, says you, but none quite so convincing at this duo. Plus, through their work, they’re also utilizing their love for literature and literary storytelling alike. This single is based upon the Raymond Carver short story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love;” so, as a person dabbling in the teaching of English, I’m always drawn to those who utilize literature in their own storytelling. They will be releasing their debut album on August 21st via Soliti.

The Beths Share Out of Sight Video

As much as I adored, and still do, Future Me Hates Me, I think I’m most impressed by the slight tweaks the Beths are adding to their musical repertoire. Sure, I’d love another dozen rockers I can sing atop my lungs to my neighbors on my job, but you can’t make the same record over and over. On their latest single, you can still hear remnants of the first LP; Elizabeth Stokes has such a distinctive melodic delivery…a certain sharpness in how she drops certain syllables. Still, the rest of the song employs the use of space and patience, almost hinting at what we’d typically call a big pop rock ballad. Catchy and open, this might be the best tune we’ve heard from the new LP yet. Jump Rope Gazers is out July 10th via Carpark Records.

Nah Share Under the Radar Video

Nah are a band we’ve covered fairly frequently over the past few years, and it seems their debut album is finally on its way to us! Today the band share “Under the Radar,” a song about championing the underrated bands you’ve discovered along your own personal journey; I feel like we can definitely feel that on our end here at ATH. For some reason, Sebastian Voss’ voice really feels close to a young Jarvis on this tune, which I don’t mind one bit. Plus, what would a great pop song be if you didn’t include a nice little horn solo (check the 3:30 mark)!? Always great to hear a band crafting well arranged pop tunes, and Nah never shy away from that approach. Look for their debut LP via Shelflife in September!

The Sour Notes Share Dandy Video

It’s been a rough week for Austin music fans, with the shuttering of several venues along the Red River Cultural District; Barracuda hit the hardest for us, personally. Our various channels have been flooded by friends and fans saying goodbye, but what better way than with a fresh video from our friends The Sour Notes, who present you their latest video…shot at Barracuda. It’s classic guitar pop, with the bands nod to Galaxie 500’s fuzzy approach definitely apparent to my ears. It’s nostalgic too, especially if you’ve been at Barracuda and recognize the wooden panelling on the wall…so you get a great track and a nice nod to what’s now in the past. This tune appeared on a recent 7″, but will also featured on the group’s forthcoming More is the Pity LP. Hats off to Vineet Gordhandas for the footage itself! RIP Barry.

DyspOra Drops AustraAlien Video

We tend to focus on what’s in front of us, and in the US, it’s very clear changes need to be made. But, this new track from DyspOra reminds me that the African community has long been the subject of discrimination world-wide…even now in Australia…a scene we cover a lot here.

Gabriel Akon had this to say about the inspiration for his tune:Theres a generation of, I call them, Australiens. They are the ones that want to be Australian, but they get treated like aliens, so theyre somehow on the fringes. They are the biggest potential this country could ever have because of what they could add to this country. All the nation has to do is invest in them. And the investment is so tiny. The investment is literally just accepting them.”

The tune is the title track from his latest album, out now via Music in Exile (a label you should really look into right now).

Introduction Share Red Light Video

I suppose a label’s reliability is the theme of today, with another one of my favorite Aussie labels, Tenth Court, sharing the latest from their forthcoming release. The trio that makes up Introduction formed in 2019 to escape the mundane male musical landscape. Here, both video and song take you into another realm; in a faint way, it reminds me of Tan Cologne, sort of creating this mysterious cinematic planet we get to briefly inhabit. Listening through on repeat, you kind of feel like you’re suspended in the air, floating while these minimal little beats warp in and out of your ear. It’s been a minute since I’ve heard a group embrace simplicity so successfully; their EP will be out on June 19th.
