Listening through this week, I realize I’ve got to keep bouncing around genres; it’s possibly the only thing keeping me sane, moving back and forth and back again. For me, Tidy is hitting the spot today with their brand of pop punk harkening to my favorite period of late 90s emo stylings. There’s an earnestness to the songwriting, like you’re hurdling towards the end of times (aren’t we?) and you’ve given up being afraid. The vocals are melodic, yet when pushed they have just the faintest harshness to make punk fanboys feel included. These Canadians will be releasing their Trying EP this Summer!

Mark Allen Piccolo Shares Yer Goin Up

A sophomore albums is always a struggle; you’re going to second guess yourself, question whether or not you’ve topped what came before. Or at least, that’s how I imagine it from behind my computer screen. For Mark Allen Piccolo, it seems he’s less interested in “topping” his debut, but rather maneuvering his songwriting in a different direction; he chose to layer each song on his daily commute to school in California, forcing him to build each track bit by bit. What that leaves us with is this multi-layered tune, begging to peel back loops and beats to reveal the central melody that courses through; it’s like Beck, if only he’d been weirder and less into Scientology. Just be sure to leave careful breadcrumbs, as its easy to find yourself lost in the rich musical tapestry Piccolo has crafted here. You’re going to get similar results too by picking up Word of the Day; out May 1st via BotCave Records.

RVG Share Perfect Day Video

Next week we’ll all finally get to hear the long awaited sophomore LP from RVG, one of the band’s I’ve been raving about for the last few years. Today they share their video for “Perfect Day,” which is just this huge twinkling pop song. The song uses these sharp guitar chords that seem to shine right through your speaker with Romy working her lyrical charms. One of the things I’m starting to notice with the collections of songs we’ve heard is how clean they sound, and I do mean that in a good way; it’s like the group just upped their pop sensibility with sights on being the biggest pop act in Australia. Feral is out April 24th via Fire Recordings. Oh…and the great video was shot by Geoffrey O’Connor of Crayon Fields fame!

Zachman Share Outsiders Video

Earlier on in the year, Zachman released their latest EP, Patterns; it was a collection of four songs that showed the band pushing themselves to expand into their various musical tastes. For me, I love Johnny Zachman’s voice; it has this faint Ben Gibbard vibe that makes it constantly feel like home when you’re listening…as is the case in this tune “Outsiders.” Still, their music isn’t exactly an homage, there’s a harshness and exploration within the confines of the tune, like what occurs at the 50 (and 1:56) second mark. They’ve also outdone themselves with the video treatment here, building a storyline to match the music made entirely of ads from drive-in movies. Be sure to check out the whole EP HERE.

The Beths Announce Jump Rope Gazers

One of the records from the last few years that I always circle back to is Future Me Hates Me, the debut from The Beths. Today, they announce their return with a new single and news of Jump Rope Gazers; I can tell this is going to be an absolute pop rock gem! For me, the hooks come in two bits, the voice of Elizabeth Stokes and the way they drop in from catchy riffs to a heavier pop rock burst in an instant. Stokes has this weird voice that seems to rise and fall, as needed, matching the energy of the song, while we all await that fruitful pop jubilation. Don’t worry, the big hook drops in right around the 2:44 mark; you’ll have the perfect smile there. This new LP will be out on July 10th via Carpark Records.

Bad Moves Announce Untenable LP

Attention everyone! Bad Moves are back with a brand new LP! If I were to pick an underrated band I try to turn folks onto, this is that band. They’ve gotten some love, sure, but I’m really hoping that this new record puts them in the little big leagues. I don’t know about you, but this song comes at the perfect time; it’s filled with this natural sense of joyousness, even though the subject matter is rather bleak. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of the American answer to the Spook School, spinning pop spiderwebs around serious subjects, filling your brain with infectious hooks and anthemic choruses. Untenable will be out on May 27th via Don Giovanni.

Nana Grizol Share Future Version Video

There’s something about Athens, Georgia that breeds these incredible bands that go overlooked for far too long. Sure, there’s that one label everyone loves to bring up…and its truly great, but I’m thinking about acts like the Glands…or perhaps Nana Grizol. I stumbled into picking up a copy of Ruth way way back, but totally fell in love with Ursa Minor. It sounded a lot like Beulah, particularly the inclusion of the horn work; still, there was this punk rock attitude in there too, which of course I gravitated towards. It’s really nice to hear that come through in a huge way too on this latest single from their forthcoming LP; there’s an earnestness that will always makes me want to punch-dance across my living room while wearing the hugest shit-eating grin. South Somewhere Else is out on Arrowhawk/Don Giovanni on June 19th.

Dark Tea Share New Single

I’d like you set aside 8 minutes of your time to listen to the brand new track from Dark Tea. Last year, Gary Canino and his project released a self-titled album, and it seems there’s a brand new effort on the not so distant horizon. I love how the song opens with this muted strum dueling with a Western-meandering slide guitar; it sets up the latter half of the song perfectly, building a landscape for what’s in store. Eventually, that cascading guitar gets darker and the air gets heavier; there’s an ominous tone that leads towards this restrained freakout…fuzzy guitars, repeated vocal lines…just drifting into the ether. For now, this is all we have, but rest assured a new LP is on the way at some point via Fire Talk.

Pleased to Meet You: Wray

Alabama’s Wray are a new act on my radar, as of today, and I’m grateful that this ear candy finally worked its way into listening rotation. Throughout the tune, the band use a steady backbeat, propulsive in nature, adding just the slightest hint of energy to a tune that stretches beyond 6 minutes. There’s a wash that coats the song, though it wavers between a foggy sensation and a glittering sparkle in the distance. It’d be easy to pigeonhole this as mere shoegaze/dream pop, but it felt more like a spiritual journey, like a musical out-of-body experience…perhaps you’re in need of such a journey. The band will release Stream of Youth/Blank World on June 5th via Earth Libraries.

Alex Izenberg Releases Disraeli Woman

Honestly, I have no idea who Alex Izenberg is, but I’m going to spend today correcting that mishap by listening to his debut, Harlequin; for now, I’m stuck on this new gem he’s just dropped. He’s got this soulful croon to his vocals, and the song itself seems drenched in R&B rhythms. There’s all these little nuances lurking in the nooks and crannies, which elevates the song’s emotional pull, not to mention making it every bit as current as anything else you’re likely to hear; it’s one of those tunes straddling the past and the present. This tune appears on a new 7″ available from Domino Recording Co.
