Neutrals Drop Video for Hate the Summer of Love

Last week while you were celebrating America, I was celebrating the great music to come our way in 2019. One of the albums at the top of my list was Kebab Disco by Neutrals. Today, they’ve shared a video for one of the album’s standout hits, so I feel like you should enjoy it, if only for another reference point on as to why you need this LP. The opening moments are owned by that bass line, brooding and bopping before the guitar jumps in to sort of skirt and dance around it. There’s this disaffected youth vibe to the track, which is perhaps why I adore it so much…something youthful and rebellious…I’m grasping at straws in my old age. Regardless, if you like the song, buy the album from Emotional Response.

Azure Blue Shares Video for the Rose

I don’t really need too much of a reason to shed light on the genius that is Azure Blue, but, since I’ve really enjoyed Images of You (not to mention all the previous releases), it only makes sense to share this video from the album. I think one of the biggest joys of this song is that Tobias’ voice is really the focal point on this number…which is one of a handful of slow tunes on the latest LP. But, that’s important because it’s so easy to get lost in the hook-laden pulse of electronica he’s crafted, yet when peeled away, it’s clear that it’s his voice that has always carried the melody. Plus, it’s the perfect bookend to another brilliant release; it’s available now via Hyrbis/Matinee Recordings.

The Golden Dregs Share Video for The Queen of Clubs

I’ve always been a fan of the Golden Dregs, especially when Lafayette came out back in 2018. But, not nearly a year later, Benjamin Woods and his project are back with a new collection of songs for your ears, Hope is for the Hopeless. I think he’s slightly changed his sound, though is storytelling and wordplay always remain central to his craft. This particular number reminds me an awful lot of old M. Ward, it has that natural warmth contrasted with this underlying darkness, perhaps because of Wood’s deepened vocal tones. I’ll always stand by and support if/and you’re offering of this brand of quiet elegance; the new LP drops this Fall!

Us Presidents Share After Finding U

Admittedly, Us Presidents wasn’t really on my radar, but when I heard Darren Frayne’s voice, I was immediately pulled right into this tune. There’s all sorts of references that spin through my mind, but ultimately, there’s just this stellar familiarity; it makes you feel the warmth of the melodies; it makes you feel like part of the texture of the song itself. Musically, there’s this sort of warped pop vibe, sort of like Coma Cinema meets the Flaming Lips, albeit, a very stripped down version of that strange union. This track appears on the new album, Summore, which drops on August 31st of this year.

Belle and Sebastian Announce Soundtrack

Now, I enter this period of Belle and Sebastian with a little trepidation, as I was not a huge fan of 2002’s Storytelling release. But, I feel like the announcement of The Days of Bagnold Summer score comes with a delicious gem streaming below. It begins with this rolling tension and brooding bass line before twinkling guitar notes sparkle and shine in step with Stuart’s voice. I don’t know if it’s the score mentality or the current mind to songwriting, but there seems to be the perfect amount of space left between verses and choruses; it makes everything seem so gran that I can’t help but to actually be excited for this release. The soundtrack will be out on September 13th via Matador Records.

Hooked on Deadbeat Beat

It’s probably not a bad thing that Detroit’s Deadbeat Beat reference the Clean in their bio, as it definitely got me to tune in here. Their latest single does employ some of the similar strategies of the legendary Flying Nun act, particularly in the way the rhythm section works; it serves as a solid backbone, letting the guitars work to do their own thing. At times, those guitars match the rhythm, providing a bounce, while other times they take these discordant twists and turns, bending about. Plus, the harmonies during the chorus are pretty spot on, laying on the pop sensibility really thick here. The band will release How Far on August 2nd via Crystal Palace and Arrowhawk.

Poppongene Share Not Wrong Video

Poppongene might not be a name on everyone’s tongue just yet, but Sophie Treloar’s project definitely will turn some heads with this new single. At first, it’s the voice that really draws you in, dangling through your speakers as it allows for the guitars to carefully ring from behind. I was fully immersed, just lost in the song, much as our character is in the video, pushing through life. But, just after the 2 minute mark things start to take on a bit more volume, layers are added to continually flesh the track out…and with that Treloar’s voice reveals this beautiful softness that caresses your ear holes. This song will appear on a new EP via Our Golden Friend later this year.

Discus Share Watch the Milk Turn Dry

When you reach out to us with news of a new band comprised of members of Clearance and Pool Holograph, you can’t expect us to pass it up, can you? No way! Especially when Discus brings as good of a track as “Watch the Milk Turn Dry.” The tune has these cavernous vocals that seep into the crevices that surround you, surrounding you in this dreamy cocoon you won’t want to escape. All the while, discordant chords dance around the voice, circling them as the drums lead your toes to that impulsive tap that lets your body know what a great song you’ve got at your ears. This tune will appear on a new LP, which is slated for a Fall release via Balaclava Records.

Sarah Bethe Nelson Shares Video for Weird Glow

I cannot stop playing this new tune from Sarah Bethe Nelson; I know that’s hyperbole, but seriously, I just want to listen to this track all day. It has this light approach to guitar pop that walks a fine line between indiepop and power-pop, though it probably leans more towards the power side of things. Her voice has this warmth to it, while also holding onto this natural sense of freedom; I envision it like that feather in Forrest Gump, rising and falling, blowing wherever it wants to blow. The Weird Glow LP will be released this Friday courtesy of the fine folks over at Burger Records.

Cruel Summer Release Part Time Punks Session

Big fan of Cruel Summer over here, and it’s always great to see bands to live recordings and reimagining of their own tunes, especially when it comes to Part Time Punks. The San Francisco outfit just dropped their PTP Session II, and it’s also got a very limited vinyl release you have to get your hands on. In honor of that, we’re sharing a video for Skyless, which first appeared on the band’s Ivy in 2017. I think the video matches the track perfectly, with this sort of dreamy popgaze running in black and white for the first minute twenty-five seconds, then the color jumps in and the track simultaneously runs off; this furious moment sounds like early Sonic Youth being crafted by indiepop nerds (and I mean that in the best way!).
