San Gabriel Announces Nights and Weekends

It’s hard to believe that Nights and Weekends is the debut album of former Austin resident, San Gabriel. We were fortunate to have him crush one of our legendary SXSW shows, and the hype around town was real. His ability to craft these synth pop gems that walk the line between pop and bedroom projects has always been one of his greatest gifts, and you can hear the melodic softness in his voice a he hangs the chorus “are we running out of time” out there for listeners. Music should make you feel good, and you’re going to find yourself in the feels when cranking this one up; Nights and Weekends hits August 15th.

Darren Hayman Readies New LP

All apologies for starting off your Friday with such a sobering tune, but new music from Darren Hayman (and his Electric Guitars) is always a pleasure, thus I wanted to begin our day with this sad tune. “Somebody just died” is about as heartbreaking of an opening as you’re going to find, and the song dwells in this solemnity, waiting for the careful craft to unfold along with Darren’s storytelling. He’s pulling these powerful emotions out of his guitar this go round, and in doing so, he’s celebrating the friend he’s lost. The instrumental breakdown, in this setting, feels like a musical salute to the deceased, shooting notes off into the ether. You’ll get to hear this track on Amazing Things, the new LP from WIAIWYA, out later this year!

Tan Cologne Share Infinity Video

When listening through the newest Tan Cologne single, I can’t escape the feeling of being in this dark fairy-land, somewhere akin to the Dark Crystal. Each little note seems to kind of hang, like some bit of magic dust, or in the case here, a bit of ash falling from the skies. And, the more I think on that, the more it feels like a spiritual seance with me dancing around a campfire, my shadow trouncing upon some desert backdrop. Interestingly, the vocals almost seem like they’re purely instrumental, building in texture to the track has this fluttering movement. They release Unknown Beyond on June 20th via Labrador Records.

Ryli Return with Come and Get Me

I love Yea-Ming Chen (musically, don’t get weird!), whether she’s covering the Velvet Underground, fronting the Rumours, or the springier side of pop with Ryli; the latter is where we have her popping in today, as the the band have just announced Come and Get Me, featuring this delight below. You can certainly hear all sorts of indiepop nods noodling about in this tune, though the interesting thing is how much springiness the rhythm section gives the track; it creates this almost danceable sound amidst a wall that feels like the noisier version of any number of great girl groups. If you’re not tapping your toes and grinning ear to ear, then we can’t help you any more. Unless, you grab the new LP before it drops on June 27th via Dandy Boy Records.

Altai Shares Like You Need It

There has to be something magnificent in this day, as I’ve got a slew of moving tunes right off the bat to keep you glued to your listening, and Altai is the perfect way to open it up. In the first moments, you can feel the guitar notes hanging beautifully, matched by these pristine vocals; I would have happily lived in those early moments, but the song had more in store. The minute mark builds in this dreamier guitar, albeit for a moment, building the tension as the song sets up to complete soar and burst at 1:35. When those drums kicked in, my mind was blown and I drifted off perfectly into this realm of pop magic that I might never escape. Keep an eye out, as they have their debut record coming real soon!

Snake Lips Announce Cat Beach

Felt like the opening jittery jangles of this new Snake Lips tune was the perfect way to kick off your Friday morning. They race right in, angular guitars whipping us into a frenzy whilst a smattering of drums shake up the scene behind the vocals. In terms of those vocal blasts, they get a little bit of call-and-response emphasis throughout the tune, creating a little bit of a pop sensibility from within the confines of an energetic little ripper. That pop moment only get further pumped up when they drop little “bops” as the track bangs to a close. Their new record Cat Beach will be out on July 25th via Repeating Cloud.

Kilynn Lunsford Releases Promiscuous Genes

When we reflect upon music as a commodity, we forget that our favorite acts were first and foremost artists, creators; they didn’t aim for algorithms or sponsorships, but rather lived, breathed and died for art. If you find yourself searching for such projects, might we suggest the latest from Kilynn Lunsford, who feels a bit like the demon spawn of Yoko Ono and Kim Gordon. On the latest single, your first greeting is this trudging stomp through some unknown hallway whilst echoes from spirits bounce across the horizon. As you push on, the song evolves into this anti-club banger, working on a heavy beat as Lunsford spouts free verse lines at the listener. Eventually, the song falls into madness, echoes abundant and everything seems like the world is falling apart beneath you. You won’t find a listen quite like this. Her new album, Promiscuous Genes, is out on May 16th via Feel It Records.

Savak Share Child’s Pose Video

It feels like Savak should be a huge name in the indie scene, featuring members of the Obits and Holy Fuck, and with a smashing rock record in their pockets, you’d think they’d be all the rage. Alas, they’re brandishing a bit of an older indie sound, using a distorted rhythm guitar to set up this wonderful chorus that seems to rain down pop sensibility on the listener; I love how it feels like its sort of a last gasp at getting the track’s message across, showering me in its melody. This is the sort of rock n’ roll that as of late seems passe, which is unfortunate because they just don’t make crunchy rock n’ roll gems like this anymore. Their new record Squawk! is out via Ernest Jenning Record Co/Peculiar Works Music on May 30th.

Alien Boy Drop I Broke My World Video

Friday will see the release of the new Alien Boy, and it’s generating a lot of buzz across the Interwebs. When this song kicks off, there’s this smattering of swirling guitars and thundering drums, setting the tone for this huge wall of beautiful noise, leaving just enough space for the vocals to cruise through coolly. The group’s aspirations were to create something akin to great classic pop rock records, such as those from the early years of Smashing Pumpkins; they look to take that immediacy and push it to the max, cranking noise that you can revisit time and time again. Grant Pavol Announces Left That Party

As things have gone lately, Grant Pavol has had a pretty busy schedule, writing and working with Shamir. But, he’s found the time to work on his stuff too, which is why we’re really stoked to hear another track from the forthcoming Left That Party EP. In the press release, it makes a nod to both Alex Chilton and Tony Molina, and you can certainly hear where the Molina-esque moments cruise through this delight. Pavol embraces a softness in his own voice, while the power of the guitars taking on these dreamy alternative vibes that coat the song in a melodic heaviness we know you’ll appreciate. The new EP will bring a much needed dose of pop rock your way on May 9th!
