Shame Share Quiet Life Video

For all the post-punk resurgence that’s gone on, I stand by that I think Shame do it best. Their live shows were dripping with sweat and tension, but they’ve also adhered to a style that’s certainly an amalgam of indie rock sounds, making their records far more interesting. Here, it almost sounds like a kind of garage rock shimmy to kick off, sort of jittery and frantic, but run through an acoustic punch. I think that contrast between the kind of galloping guitar and the growl in the vocals is the perfect set up, but also one that is supremely rewarding. I’m all for being aggressive, but the way they balance the soft and heavy fits perfectly into my old man ears. Their new album Cutthroat drops on my kid’s birthday, September 5th, so double the reason to celebrate; it’s out via Dead Oceans, followed by a big North American tour in early 2026.

Galore Share Bastard Video

There is something so powerful about the jangling of a guitar that just makes the world open and say awesome, like on this new Galore track. You can’t deny that the minute they started chugging away at those jagged riffs that your spirit instantly picked up, much like the joy the band takes in smashing things throughout the accompanying video. The vocals do a lot to carry the song as well, switching back and forth between the wistful dreaminess of indiepop and an emphatic punch up when the whole gang joins in on the fun. Everything about this track just feels like this is the world we should be living for, so grab Dirt from Speakeasy Studios SF on July 25th.

Sunshine Sound Asylum Drop Milady

Soul music is burned deep in the hearts of American music, and as of late, there’s been a huge resurgence, and I know RayRay and I are big fans there. Sunshine Sound Asylum caught my attention as they hold tight to the swinging melodic formation that makes the sound so infectious. This single, however, also holds tight to a bit of a heavier feel, almost swampy, like the song’s perspiring as it drives the groove right into your heart. Just thought it was a fun summertime ditty that’ll make you sweat and swing with whoever you find near ya.

New Music from Das Kope

Das Kope has has been on the ATH radar for some time now, and with the announcement of his record, we wanted to be sure this new little banger was on your radar this week. The artist is really toying with our expectation, as his previous work has really been hyper-melodic and infectious. Don’t get us wrong, this tune does have a nice little bit of a hook, but it’s sort of disguised in this murky haze of sun. In the first minute, you’re subdued by this trickling bit of production, with a twisting guitar note that just seems suspended in the air. When it drops in, the pop connection is made, illustrating how far into the dramatic pop form Das Kope has gone; expect a new album to hit later this Summer.

Stella and the Very Messed Share Big Familiar

The news of brand new Stella and the Very Messed has been sitting in my inbox for a few weeks, and I’m so excited about this record I couldn’t wait to share the news with you. Stella Maxwell, formerly of Cruiserweight, has been a powerhouse in the Texas music scene for several decades, and despite my love for all her previous works, this new single is just a straight hit. A light strum opens before the drums crash in with a wash of heavy guitar riffs, hitting you right in the face as Maxwell’s voice belts out notes with an assuredness of an indie rock veteran. The way the band pull back to kind of offer a little moment of rest, then blast back just builds this huge wall of power that washes over you again and again. You’ll be able to get yourself a copy of their new record, Big Familiar, this Fall via Double Helix Records.

Moviola Share Slage Wave Video

There is something to be said about a band that’s 30 years down the road and still banging out masterful hits, like Ohio’s Moviola. They’re dropping their 11th album, Earthbound, at the end of this summer, and our latest listen has this casual bit of warm indie rock coming through your speakers. In a sense, it has the same musical sentiment that you’d find in an old Lucksmiths LP, offering these well-thought out melodies in simplistic forms that keep you returning to find solace in the music you love. I’ll admit, there’s nothing blowing your hair back in that modern sense, but rather you’re treated to great songwriting and arrangements that should put the new LP on your radar. Earthbound hits on August 29th via Dromedary Records.

Origami Ghosts Share Heaven’s Gate Video

I love the immediate hook that pops up when you click play on the new video from Origami Ghosts. A rush of jangling folk guitars ramp you up where your body starts to sort of convulse in this natural rhythm and everything begins to glow with joy. Plus, how often do you get to hear a little bit of flute in your indie rock diet? Probably not enough! The frantic nature of the tune lets the vocals crawl atop, scratching at your ears as the tune pushes forward; it’s also of note that you can hear the album’s title as part of the chorus here. A Fine Time to Talk About Nothing is out on August 8th.

That New Mac DeMarco Tune

I will openly admit that I have probably spent an inordinate amount of time complaining about how Mac DeMarco was the new Dave Matthews; he was responsible for many a copycat, and many a cover at house shows/coffee shops! Still, I did appreciate a good portion of his work, but I feel like yesterday’s single is actually one of his best pieces, reveling in its simplicity and charm. It almost sounds like something Bolan or Johnston would have pulled up, with this intimacy being worn on the sleeve, with little less needed as the attraction is just masterclass. Didn’t expect to find myself loving this as much as I do, so now I have a feeling that I’ll definitely be spending time with Mac’s new LP, Guitar, which comes out on August 22nd.

Slow Crush Share While You Dream Vividly

Do not be seduced by the twinkling piano notes of this new Slow Crush track, for as their band name would imply, they’re going to slowly crush your ears with this huge wall of ambient noise; you’ll get to meet those riffs at the 35 second mark, as they crash into you. Despite the thundering sound and huge billowing waves of guitar shrieking, the song feels more like a slowcore adventure, or something of the bedroom pop nature. Sure, the vocals are slightly coated in the echoes of the sonic destruction, but they operate like this gravitational force, pulling the song into this central melody. There’s a slight little mix up in the middle, which I totally applaud; too many folks in this genre get stuck in the monotony of formula. Their album Thirst will hit on August 29th via Pure Noise.

Golden Apples Announces Shooting Star

I love waking up to a bunch of really rad tunes, and today seems to be in our favor, as we now get this rad tune from Golden Apples, announcing the group’s new LP. The press release says their new album draws from a fusion between the sounds of Karen Dalton and Yo La Tengo, so obviously that’s going to scratch all the itches, musically. For me, the vocals really drew me in here, letting the sort of noise billow all around my ears whilst still keeping me focused; they’re kind of whispering, with some layers thrown atop one another while guitars buzz and explode in the background. It’s a balance between noise and joy, and I’m just going to sit here and put it on repeat for a few rounds. Shooting Star will drop via Lame-O on September 19th.
