Tugboat Captain Drop Pest Control Video

This past Spring, ATH faves Tugboat Captain dropped the excellent Dog Tale LP. They’ve just recently offered up this stunning live/lyric video, which captures the spirit of the album and the focus track, “Pest Control.” It’s a celebratory track, despite some of the thematic elements, lifting your spirits once you latch onto the chorus. Every time I run through this track (and I’ve done this a lot) there’s just something bigger than myself, and bigger than my speakers; it’s got this masterful bravado that just makes you feel like you’re alive. Pleased to Meet You: The Cindys

Is it weird to declare yourself a super fan if the band in question only has one single to their name? Well, meet the Cindys. Songwriter Jack Ogborne has previously received praise for his project Bingo Fury, but this new (old) sound he’s circulating is perfect for folks of my ilk. I mean, the poetic nature and just the general song structure reeks of the Go-Betweens, though the guitar sound is a bit bolder, and even heavier in spots, as the group look back and step into the future. Naima Bock’s additional vocals on the second verse just cement the fact that this is going to be spinning in my head for the next however long I go. Courtesy of Breakfast Records.

Chris Staples Releases A Cold New York Morning

There are few artists who really can craft something emotionally moving in the most simplistic form, but Chris Staples feels like one such songwriter. His voice has that familiarity, akin to Sam Beam, and it pulls at you, begging you to be part of something greater than yourself. It’s offered up with a light guitar, occasionally layered with another behind to build in some extra depth. Those little nuances are perfectly placed in the arrangement, maximizing every little emotional pull, like the synth notes in the middle. Honestly, it reminds me of a young college Nathan listening to Pedro in my dorm room, and I don’t mind that one bit. His new album Don’t Worry will be perfect for those seeking musical solace; it drops on August 5th.

The Cords Announce Debut Record

It looks like I’ll be giving all my money this year to Slumberland/Skep Wax, as the two powerhouse labels have announced another joint release that I’m surely picking up. Today, the Cords have announced their debut self-titled album, and the new single picks up on all the promise they’ve displayed in the handful of singles that have popped up over the last couple of years. It’s an energetic rush of jangling guitars and steadfast drumming, snappy in the right spots while your cup is brimming with the melodic hooks on the vocal front. There is an innocence that pervades this tune, something that just allows you to lift your head above the foggy clouds of the sad world we live in, and for a moment, catch your breath and relish the joy in the simple things. Really looking forward to the entirety of their debut; it drops on September 26th.

Cate Le Bon Shares Is It Worth It (Happy Birthday)

Whether you want to believe me or not, Cate Le Bon is a once in a lifetime artist, as evidenced by her continual evolution; she reminds me a lot of Bowie, shapeshifting between album cycles whilst guiding others in their own studio endeavors. On her latest single there’s this synthetic haze that washes over the entirety of the tune, giving this heavy buzz in a melodic fashion. It’s a pretty vocal forward track, even with the heavy piano and synths; there are some heavier vocal tones accented by these playful little run up the scales that I absolutely adore. Her new album, Michelangelo Dying will be out September 26th via Mexican Summer.

San Gabriel Plays with Fire

If I could pick an artist that I wished could cross over into the masses, I’d love for folks to catch onto San Gabriel…and this new single might be the one to catch some ears. Trickling keys and samples open the track to this angular riff that hits sharply; it sets up the rush of the hook perfectly, opening the door for James to walk into the frame. Once he hits, his voice is surrounded by various backing voices, filling the empty space with textural layers, all of it leading to this masterful chorus that should have you punching the air with joy. If you’re willing to let joy into your heart, open it to the tune below; Nights and Weekends is out August 15th.

Runo Plum Signs to Winspear

Winspear is on a roll label-wise, riding fresh on their signing of the new Winter album, they’ve now announced that they’ll be working with Runo Plum. Along with the excellent news, there’s a brand new single, with a track that dwells on the concept of community and friendship, which seems ever more important in today’s landscape. Musically, it’s the sort of folk-adjacent brand that made hue stars out of Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten; I love the vocals here though, living in this more ethereal climate that encourages the sense of longing that courses through the track. There’s a slew of European tour dates coming up for the artist, but get ready to hear this name quite a bit in the next year.

Living Hour Announce Internal Drone Infinity

Several years have passed since we’ve heard from Winnipeg’s Living Hour, but a new single tells us we’re in for another great record. They brought their new batch of songs to Melina Duterte of Jay Som, and while I appreciate a good engineer, the magic doesn’t happen without the songwriting. I love how the first minute of this tune seems to kind of offer several stages, starting with a strum then moving to full band and finally exploding into the chorus with a soaring vocal change and ripping solo guitar line. If they can pull all that off in less than a minute what do you think they’ll accomplish on Internal Drone Infinity? The new record is out on October 17th via Keeled Scales/PaperBag/Beloved Records.

Wombo Shares Spyhopping Single

Every twist and turn on this new single from Wombo seems intentionally set, like the band are purposefully sonically shapeshifting, lulling us into the secretive realms of their sound. At times, struck notes can ring discordantly, but they don’t put you off, only pique your interest as the bass works you back into the rhythm of the track. It goes this way, then that way, letting Sydney Chadwick weave her way through the well-crafted skeletal backbone of this jam. Danger in Fives is out on August 8th via Fire Talk.

Winter Shares Without You

Admittedly, you’re probably sincerely tired of hearing bedroom pop this and bedroom pop that, but if there’s one record on the horizon that I think will be perfect for those nights alone with the record on, it’s this new Winter. If you listen to the way it’s set up on the latest single, it’s got a very light stroke, with Samira’s voice drenching the track in this heavy melody that consistently encompasses my brain’s interpretation of ethereal. Every little bit of the mix just works perfectly, and each time I press play, I don’t want to take my headphones out for fear that the magic will disappear. I bet you’re going to feel the same, so be sure to order Adult Romantix via Winspear before its August 22nd release date.
