New Tune from The Ophelias

I’m really impressed by the sounds coming out of the Ophelias camp in lieu of their next LP. Their latest shared composition is a wondrous take on modern indie rock aesthetics. Of course, I’m drawn into the way the intonation is changed in each syllable of the vocals, not to mention the way voices seem layered upon one another. But, the power of the vocals wouldn’t be as strong if it weren’t for the surrounding accompaniment; the swelling string works adds great depth. Almost everything seems like its running in a huge loop, as if the band were listening to tons of early trip-hop and decided to spin it in their own direction. They release Almost via Joyful Noise on July 13th.

The Shifters Announce New LP on Trouble in Mind

What!? Another band from Melbourne, Australia that rules? This time the band is The Shifters, and they’ve just announced they’ll be releasing their debut LP via Trouble in Mind Records. Our first listen has this rad bouncing rhythm line with matching guitar cuts jangling to keep the pace; it strangely grips you and never lets go. The subject matter, and accompanying video, seem to be taking a knock on a very ordinary life…which is weird because I’m working now, and then going to the gym…are these guys mocking me!? Doesn’t matter, the song is precisely what’s made the group a hot item; they release Have a Cunning Plan on September 21st.

New Video from Smokescreens

Another day and another post related to Slumberland Records…what can you say…the labels so hot right now. Today we’ve got the latest video from newly adored Smokescreens, who are prepping Used to Yesterday for a July release. This track is a dedicated ode to the band’s New Zealand influences, where you can hear the guitars working against each other in unison to craft a melody that seeps over into the vocals. I love some of the gang vocals on this track; they’re recorded in such a way as you can barely decipher between one voice, uniting the band as a singular pop entity. The song rules, the band rules (and they’ll be touring throughout August, so be on the lookout!).

Beachy Pop from Jan Flu

It’s time I take my adoration of indiepop sounds all over the world, this time visiting Japanese outfit Jan Flu. The video itself seems to immediately draw from American tropes such as the skateboarding along the beachfront or other images associated with Cali. Musically, there’s this driving bounce from the group, heightened by the crisp angular guitar lines that encircle your ears. The vocals have this deep tonal quality, which also works in contrast to the sharp tones of the guitars; this juxtaposition is the one that encourages you to twirl about with your arms flailing. This song appears on the groups debut album, After Image, which comes out on July 11th.

Dylan Mondegreen Prepares A Place in the Sun

Dylan Mondegreen is the moniker for the musical project of Borge Sildnes, and today we’re really happy to share this grand pop gesture that alerts us to a new album on the horizon. There are elements of indiepop within the confines of this track, though the strings arrangements give the track this larger than life feel…a kin to some of the B&S tunes that uses similar songwriting approaches. I love how Borge seems to sit back with his voice a little bit, almost as if he’s pulled back to let the track’s natural melody flow through your speakers. This song will appear on A Place in the Sun…slated for a release later this year.

New Ditty from Stanley Brinks and Freshcard

Over the last few years, Stanley Brinks and Freshcard have been one of my favorite duos. They craft a blend of playful indiepop and folk that fans of either genre will find endearing; they even manage to capture that playful air in their performance in the video for this single. Musically, the song’s pretty simple, with the selling point being the juxtaposition of Brinks’ and Freshcard’s voices set over a steady percussive beat and gentle guitar strum. The two will release their new collection of songs, Midnight Tequila, will be released on June 29th via Fika Recordings.

Bombshell Nightlight Prep Debut LP

Jon Cardiello is the man behind Bombshell Nightlight, a bedroom pop operation crafted in the confines of a remote cabin in Montana. Placid Lake is the result of the time spent, and what a wondrous result. Cardiello’s voice is striking from the moment it enters, surrounded by this carefully meandering guitar line and careful percussion. It’s a gentle moment, but the track begins to build; you can feel the tension pushing you forwards. Supporting vocals lift Jon’s voice up high, crashing down just after the 2 minute mark with more purpose that establishes the track’s apex…then slowly it fades away into where it all began…a beautiful musical journey for any listener. Placid Lake will be released in August, courtesy of the joint efforts of Anything Bagel and Reflective Tapes.

Drawing Boards Drop New Video

Our friends over at Gentle Reminder Records released the self-titled debut from Drawing Boards, which we’ve already covered in small fashion. And now, as the album cycle continues, the band have dropped a video for “Bee into the Wave,” which should win you over with the presence of puppets! The song’s one of my favorites from the LP with a memorable chorus that sticks in your head; the track has a natural bounce that also employs the hook-factor to keep you coming back. Go ahead, try not to be charmed!

We Have New Spiritualized

Man, summertime is the right time. I hit up the gym, got a few miles of running in, then I get to come home to a sweet new track from Spiritualized, one of my favorite bands. It seems to be the same place J Spaceman left us when they last dropped a release back in 2012, though the recording process was said to be much different this round. Spaceman says he spent months writing the songs in his bedroom, but if that’s the case, he still manages to capture what makes some of the band’s shows so captivating with huge horns and textured keys built around the simple structures. And Nothing Hurt, the new full length LP, will be out on September 7th via Fat Possum.
