Moonlover Drops New Video

If you’re looking for an Australian artist to make some new waves abroad, then perhaps you should listen closely to this new video from Moonlover. It’s one of the standout tunes on the recently released Thou Shall Be Free LP, and the natural bounce of the song immediately had my attention. The track sort of has this casual beach vibe, feeling as if the spray from crashing waves just gently coats your skin. But, the song takes a slight turn at the 2 minute mark that’s charming; it’s just a slight turn in the way the vocals get delivered before settling back into the track’s melody. Just something for you to enjoy on this fine Tuesday morning; the LP is available via Our Golden Friend.

Mourn Return with New LP

Not too long ago the youngsters in Mourn were dipping their toes into the indie pond with a huge push from their label Captured Tracks. Now, a few years on, and grappling with success, the band returns with Sorpresa Familia. Our first listen has these jagged guitar lines, almost as if the band were branching into the realm of art punk; the lyrics even at times seem to have a sort of call and response fashion. But, what ultimately makes this song so infectious, along with the video, is that it captures the band as a joyful entity; the line of “what a shame” shouted at full force while the band follow it up with boisterous handclaps…it’s okay to have fun, I promise. Look for their new LP via Captured Tracks on June 15th.

Stream a New Single from Harry Permezel

Seems like Friday is as good a day as any to sit in with some stripped back indie rock tunes, such as this new number from Melbourne’s Harry Permezel. His music is immediately familiar, stepping in line with a great deal of the latest trends in indie rock…that sort of revisiting of emo in a different manner. Still, something about Harry’s voice keeps bringing me back; he’s got this understated croon that charms through repeated listens. This is the title track from his Wax Man album, which drops on May 4th via Muscle Beach Records.

New RVG Video for Eggshell World

Yep, I’m still super obsessed with RVG, as evidenced by my ventures to see them as frequently as possible during SXSW, not to mention my pre-fest fawning. This video from the band’s A Quality of Mercy album was one of the highlights from their live set, and is definitely one of the standout tunes on a pretty great LP. I think my favorite line from this track is “if there were two of me, well, one could be with you;” I’ll let you listen closely to make your own judgment. The video features Romy clad in silver, and even in the solitude of the video, you can feel the power that connects Romy to the audience. Dammit, I love this band.

Red Red Eyes Release Video for Empty Land

A few weeks back I wrote about the smoky pop beauty of Red Red Eyes, and the band are back with a video for the lead track from their new LP, Horology. The video and the song’s natural emotion evoke a sort of gothic pop underbelly; it could easily work into the realm of dream pop…if those dreams were nightmares. While Laura McMahon’s voice is remarkable, it wouldn’t have anywhere to go if it weren’t for the sonic landscape crafted behind her by musical partner Xavier Watkins. Together, they’ve crafted this brooding number that seems understated at times, but little accents pop up via trickling electronics or strong guitar twang. Get lost in this song, and the whole LP on May 18th when it’s released by WIAIWYA.

Love This New S. Carey Video

S. Carey‘s latest video really hits home for me, and not just musically. I used to live in Yellowstone. True story. And, I’ll admit, I wish I had Carey’s tune in my car as I drove throughout the park on errands and what not; it does perfectly match the setting and ambiance of traveling through the park. But, be warned, as they actually don’t hit the park until about the 1.5 minute mark; they go through some other locales, equally as majestic. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s just a damn good song, but I’m going to keep watching this video on repeat for a bit. You’ll find this track on the latest LP, Hundred Acres, via Jagjaguwar.

New Music from Lehmann B Smith

I actually just watched Lehmann B Smith play in Totally Mild last week during SXSW, but now we get to hear what he’s been doing on his own. Bedroom Suck Records just announced they’ll be releasing his new record Poplar Music, and we’re here to give you a glimpse with the album’s first single. It’s strange in that it feels like the song could almost be a stomp, especially with the guitar chords that sit in the back, almost propelling the song forward. But, there’s something about the way Smith has texturized the track that elevates it beyond, whether with vocal bits or atmospheric touches and tinkers. I’m digging it, if that matters; the album drops on May 25th.

Pretty Rad Holy Wave Tune

There’s something about the new developments in the Holy Wave world that have piqued my interest; they’ve stepped slightly outside the realm of psychedelia to capture a broader sound, particularly on this new single. The first several minutes of the track do harken to the core genre, though they’ve included these brighter notes, just the faintest hint of Stereolab perhaps ebbing through. Then, the vocals enter the picture, with two seemingly contrasting vocal pieces, playing to each other; it’s a nod to dreamier bedroom pop, though with a larger sound one can’t escape. It’s like some weird sandwich that encapsulates everything in the current musical climate; I love it. Check the band’s Adult Fear LP on March 30th via Reverberation Appreciation Society.

Have You Heard Nah?

While we were away during SXSW, we missed some special tunes, but perhaps none hits home with me more than this charming number from Nah. It’s a shimmering indiepop ditty with an infectious natural bounce, offset perfectly by the warmth that comes across in the delivery of the vocals from Sebastian, Kenji and Estella. While the duo started the project as a joke, they ended up crafting a delightful EP that we’ll be sure to rave about when it drops. For now, you’re best to just sit back and fall in love with this group from the get-go; I rarely send indiepop fans the wrong way!

New Parquet Courts Number

Come into work, and what do I find? A new Parquet Courts, with a slightly new sound…continuing on from their first single. This has a funky groove, including some old school percussive styles most often associated with dancehall. The accompanying video really ups the ante, displaying a band that seem to be having a great time out there. It’s probably going to throw folks for a huge loop once they hear it, but I completely respect that…no one wants to hear you make the same album again and again (ask the Strokes). You can grab the band’s new album, Wide Awake!, on May 18th via Rough Trade Records.
