Kal Marks Shares A Functional Earth

When you press play on the new Kal Marks tune, you’re going to feel a little bit anxious; there’s this echoing bit of distorted guitars that just pulses in the background, sort of in and out and in and out, all the while the front of the mix offers this primal rock groove. It feels like there’s impending doom headed our way, which is actually the point, as the song takes on the subject matter of humanity’s current damnation. And although that groove feels stationary, a repeat listen will show you peaking just as the song does, rushing into this chaotic jam that seemingly celebrates all that the world, and the tune, have to offer. Dig into this, and look for Wasteland Baby, out on September 13th via Exploding In Sound.

Check Merce Lemon’s New Video

We’ve been on the Merce Lemon for some time now, and she’s finally getting some deserved attention, with this new single/video only reinforcing our belief in her songwriting. This new single offers the stark fragility that make, especially in the way the first three minutes are built up here. But, much like the first single from the new record, there’s this moment of noise, almost coming out of nowhere, hinting at the group sound folks will likely get when they jump in the van to tour behind Watch Me Drive Them Dogs Wild. Another stellar tune from the record; it drops on September 27th via Darling Records.

Humdrum Share See Through You + Announce Debut LP

When Star Tropics called it a day, we were a bit sad over here. But, Loren pivoted and began building Humdrum. We were treated to a couple of great singles, and now, it looks like we’re finally being offered a full-length…and yet more money we’ve got to toss to Slumberland Records. On our first sneak peek, we get to hear the band operating with a classic indiepop sound, built with fuzzy riffs that mix it up with sharper jangles and a steadying backbeat that keeps the pace for everyone involved. Layered vocal melodies are Loren’s specialty, and he’s not shying away from that, so you know you’re going to fall under the spell of his craftsmanship. Every Heaven comes out on October 18th!

Mo Dotti Announces Opaque LP

Surely the cool kids from yesterday were aware of Mo Dotti’s announcement about their forthcoming Opaque LP. There are tons of reasons for it to pop up (a day late) over here on ATH: the song rips, our friend Joe is helping spread the word, and old ATH (former ATX) pal Joey Oaxaca did the recording. So, here we are, better late than never encouraging you to just press play, then turn that volume up a notch or two. A pulsating wall of psychedelic screeching greets you, pulling on some of those late acidpop tones, and yet they pull all that back top open the curtain on a beautiful ray of melody. Even with the pleasant nature, you can still hear the angst of the guitars working in the distance, dropping off the perfect juxtaposition like it was no big deal. If you’re seeking beauty amidst your chaos, then be sure to order Opaque before it’s out on September 20th.

Photay Shares Video for Air Lock

There’s nothing like getting yourself caught up in the week, so before you dive into Wednesday, let Photay mesmerize you with this spiritual bit of electronica…along with its accompanying visual adventure. While some of the beat-work recalls the drum n’ bass constructs, there’s this open nature to the tune’s evolution, kind of building it into this electronic score for some scientific documentary piece. Some robotic vocal moments spring up in the track’s latter half, just like a bud sprouting from the cracked Earth. This tune appears on Windswept, which drops on September 20th.

Skeggs Announce Pacific Highway Music

There’s just something so satisfying about a new Skeggs tune. Sure, I miss Toby being part of the band, and maybe a bit of his spirit, but the band just know how to write really good pop rock hits. All their songs have these huge choruses you want to scream out loud, even if you’re running at top speed through your neighborhood (trust me on that one!). This new song’s just that, with a little bit of twang added in to keep just a bit of a garage rock edge to the craft, and definitely reminds me that the group still have tons to offer their fans. Look for Pacific Highway Music on the horizon.

Jealous Yellow Share Purple Crayon Vid

Seattle outfit Jealous Yellow will be dropping their new record this Fall, and while I’m sure most folks will focus on the frantic nature of their latest single (as I initially did), do yourself a favor and try to peel back the layers here, as it’ll set you on fire. Their opening moments, particularly with the insane rhythm section reminded me a bit of Snooper at first, offering a startling pace that furiously shoved me down the musical hallway here. But, our first entry into the pop realm of this jam is the brooding vocals that soon enter, almost like a shadowy figure calling on the intercom; it quickly gets contrasted against the more dangerous voice growling in the background. There’s consistently so much going on that you’ll miss out on the joy of the song, so best to play it on repeat over and over so you don’t miss a thing! Czech Vampire is out on October 14th via Erste Theke Tontrger.

A Place to Bury Strangers Share You Got Me Video

For all the walls of noise and discord they’ve sowed over the years, it’s nice to see that A Place to Bury Strangers still know how to turn a pop trick or two, as they do in their latest single. This tune began with a jagged run of guitar notes, creating a running pattern that has you chasing the track down. Now, just because the wall of noise that typically accompanies the band’s work is pulled back, doesn’t mean it’s all puppies and rainbows; there’s still an industrial darkness to their craft, and it builds, particularly towards the latter half where some of the notes almost seem lost along their path. Nice to still hear a band throw some wrinkles in their craft; looking forward to hearing Synthesizer when it hits on October 4th via Dedstrange.

Best Bets Share Spooky Signals Video

We were ecstatic when we got news that there was a new record on the way from Best Bets this year; the first single was reminiscent of new member Joe’s work in Salad Boys, but this one dives full on into blissed out pop rock. You’ll hear two distinctive guitar lines riding through, one creating this curtain of distortion while the other kicks off in the front of the mix, dancing a little jangling jig. There’s a cooled earnestness on the vocals, almost feeling like you’ve got al little hope left for you in the world. The Hollow Husk of Feeling will pleasantly fall into our laps on September 27th via Meritorio Records.

Shady Cove Share Midwest Video

After comparing Shady Cove to Wilson-Philips, I still can’t walk away from that comparison. But, what I can say is they’ve continued to take that dual vocal work and branch their sound into something that feels timeless. There’s a heavenly synth wash throughout this tone, the sort that you definitely notice, though it never detracts from the focus, especially when the guitar lines cascade and dance a bit in the mixture of swirling sonics. I do appreciate how they’re flirting with those of us with dreampop inclinations, yet they hold onto their own instincts, which keeps a little uniqueness in their craft. Part II will be released on August 30th.
