Lunar Vacation Share Tom Single

While I’ve dabbled in being a fan of Lunar Vacation, I’m totally onboard with their next record, at least from the three tunes we’ve heard, including this new single below. On the surface, it’s just a generally good pop rock number, with a chorus that has all the right elements to cast a spell over you. That said, it’s the nuanced little moments in the band’s craft that really ask you sit with the record; go to the 2:13 second mark, where the dreaminess is pulled apart for just a little more playfulness and tension building, pushing you up that pop mountain only to reach the top and shoot you joyously down the other side with a big ol’ grin upon your face. Everything Matters Everything’s Fire is out September 13th via Keeled Scales.

Phantom Handshakes Share Apart Video

Through the first two singles from the new Phantom Handshakes LP, you could see the progress/growth from their earlier work. This go round, they seem to be delving into a bit darker territory in a sense, which we don’t mind one single bit, particularly as the execution of the sound around Federica’s work is on point. If you press play, you’re greeted by a growling wall of distortion, though it’s pushed into the far-off background, in favor of the sharper guitar stabs up front. But, both subside, leaving only the rhythm section and an atmospheric wind blowing across the tune, all of it creating more of an anxiety-ridden haunted house vibe, which feels like fairly new territory. All that said, there’s still a pop core, that’ll keep you coming back to grab a listen to Sirens at Golden Hour.

Pleased To Meet You: Raudiver

Technically speaking, we do know the folks in Houston’s Raudiver; it’s the new project of Lauren and Charlie Eddy, of ATH favorites El Lago. They’re taking their darker musical tendencies from the past and really pushing them forward, building songs on synthetic beats and Charlie’s distorted riff work, creating this dense brand of dark pop. Dreamy elements, such as those in the shadows of the video below, pervade throughout the tune, though Lauren’s voice continues to be the lighthouse of pop in the darkened storm of their craft. That texture of guitar in the background definitely adds a nice layer of tension to the tune though, contrasting the dancier goth elements beneath. They’ll be releasing their debut, Leave Before Dark, this September via Geodesic Records.

Chimers Ready Through Today LP

As much as it might pain our friend Norman Wanklord, 12XU is putting out some of the best records of the year; they’ve already dropped Water Damage and Winged Wheel LPs, among a few compilations…and they’re not done yet, as they now have Chimers ready to rock. This tune’s all about immediacy, with thundering drums pounding through the speakers from the moment the guitars rip off, running discordantly. If you pulled back the vocals, you’d have this growling rock tune, dangerous in both vibe and energy. But, that’s just the point, there are vocals, and while they feel weighted, they have this cooled emotion, balancing out the primal nature and building in the faintest hint of pop sensibility. Through Today is out on November 8th.

Mt. Fog Share Drifting Video

Hopefully you’ve already encountered “Drifting,” one of the first singles to arrive from the forthcoming Mt. Fog LP. If not, well, let us remind you of the tune as we now have an accompanying video to let you play in the world created by Carolyn B. The song itself operates upon this primal bounce, snapping and pulsing, letting Carolyn’s distinctive vocals cast their spell upon the listener. Personally, I’m drawn to the line of “pick up pieces every day,” as we should all strive to learn something new, pick something up, each day. Visually, you find the band careening through the wilderness, embracing the band’s artistic origins; you can seem them gathering and constructing, ultimately transforming one another, which resonates with the record’s themes of metamorphosis. Ultraviolet Heart Machine is out September 17th via Ghost Mountain Records.

Dew Claw Share Fantastic Voyage Video

The core songwriting duo of Stephen Hunking and Chris Xefos know their way around a good hook, seeing as they’ve been at the helm of various rock endeavors for nearly 3 decades (Hypnowheel, King Missile, etc); the idiom “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is irrelevant, as this band is seasoned enough to know how to grab your ear in a hurry. It’ll only take you 4 seconds before the grooving seduction of this brand new Dew Claw single gets its teeth in you; the boogey of the guitar riffs match up perfectly with the hand-clapping stomp of the drums. They’re employment of the gang-vocal effect doubles down on the catchiness here, bridging a thundering garage vibe with a bit of power-pop swagger. All these little pieces of great songwriting get tied together with a ribbon of joy that shines through the video accompaniment, created by Stephen himself. This is just one of the new tunes that’ll appear on their new AA single, dropping September 13th via Dromedary Records.

The Smashing Times Announces Mrs Ladyships and the Cleanerhouse Boys

Every year you get a brilliant record from the Smashing Times, and it looks like 2024 is just another year and another record brimming with hook-laden pop tunes. We bring you the first sneak peek into Mrs Ladyship and the Cleanerhouse Boys, which opens with almost a 15 second tease before seductively bringing you into the band’s inner-circle by way of snapping cymbal percussion and bobbing bass. You hang here, kicking it with the band until you hit that brilliant moment of infectious pop that drops around 54 seconds; they intertwine vocal harmonies as if they’re taking the best moments from your favorite Pastels/Vaselines mixtape. The song continues to hit at the left of center pop brand, brining in the backing vocals to sprinkle bits of sugar on the wayward pop piece of toast. More brilliant pop that we’ll see dropping via K Records on November 1st.

The Martial Arts Drop Friends for Fools

Glaswegian pop rock act The Martial Arts are going to be dropping a new record for you next week, so why not take the chance to indulge your pop roots a bit here by listening to their latest single. It opens with this sort of pub rock chug to it, with a nice little bit of cowbell thrown in for fun, but the big hooks don’t swing into the song until you hit the 35 second mark. This is where they turn you into a pop fanatic, dropping sharp percussive beats and angular strums that open up into power pop goodness. Paul Kelly’s voice just rips in this performance, punctuating his delivery in the right spots, then pulling back the sheets to reveal the melodic underbelly that runs throughout. In There Like Swimwear will be out on August 9th via WIAIWYA.

New Single from Kate Bollinger

Dammit Kate Bollinger, this is a bop! This new single is instantly spirited, working with a light little strum that meets up with a peppy bit of snare and cymbal to kick the springiness of the song right into your eardrums. Then Bollinger’s voice is like a whispering angel, so soft and feathered, caressing the inner ear canal as it slides right into your daily listening rotation. Using the monosyllabic “las” to further the melodic trance she’s putting you in, you might find yourself trapped in a whirlpool of joy where you won’t want to swim out. You’ll be smiling all the way to wherever you go if you grab Songs From a Thousand Frames of Mind, out September 27th via Ghostly International.

Three Quarter Skies Share Leave a Light On

Simon Scott’s name is going to carry a lot of weight into his Three Quarter Skies project, and rightfully so, as the drummer for Slowdive is building something that certainly feels adjacent to his other work. This song feels like a light rainstorm rolling in off the ocean, as you can see/hear the clouds from miles away, but when they arrive via the vocals, they’re lighter, merely rinsing you with emotion rather than pummeling you with thunderous rain drops. It’s the sort of storm where you just sit in it, grateful to be alive as your body is washed by this musical piece, all the textures of the world circling about. Fade In will be released on September 6th via Sonic Cathedral.
