Vintage Crop Announce New 7″

Felt a little power-poppy this morning, so felt like I should turn into something a little sharper, a little more brooding, such as this fresh track from Melbourne’s Vintage Crop. The guitars on this song really get you wound up; they curl around your ears, snaking inside in this sort of off-kilter chug, thrusting you right into the pounding stomp of the drum. Jack’s vocals come across in this similar throttle, almost hitting you as each syllable tries to step in line with the rhythm. You get a hint of respite in the track’s middle, with some punctuating synth stabs hitting from behind the mix, all of it leading to the resolution. The video was directed by Oscar O’shea, who aimed to present three parallel versions of Jack, coinciding with the feelings of change in the lyrical content. This new 7″ is available on September 8th via Upset the Rhythm and Anti Fade.

Grrrl Gang Share Better Than Life Video

When I first heard Grrrl Gang, I was definitely intrigued by the Indonesian outfit’s pop-prowess from within the confines of a gritty indie sound. On their latest single, the band completely indulge in the gritty realm, coming into the darkened territory where you’d expect acts influenced by Sonic Youth to party together. The drums pound away, driving the rhythm of the song forward and really building this baleful atmosphere. Angeeta’s voice is heavy, but buried just beneath the mix, so it kind of feels weighed down by the song’s power; this ties into the thematic elements, however, as the song comments on her struggles with her mental health. Really digging in on this one. Spunky is out on September 22nd via Trapped Animal/Kill Rock Stars.

Bennett Shares Glass Ball Single

After time away from the local scene, Bennett has returned to the Memphis musical world, this time on their own, fleshing out a collection of songs that’s likely to charm as well as offend. Admittedly, I felt a blast of emotion here. I loved the stuttering drum opening, met by twinkling guitars and synths. But, then there was this warble that threw me off; I wasn’t sure where to go, but the groove kept me tethered, dragging me along for the ride. As the track unfolded, those vocal forays fleshed out into more traditional crooning, kind of reminding me of playful artists like Jarvis Cocker. That playfulness pushes into the song too, especially in the latter half, with the song moving into a more theatrical pop realm. It’s one of those tunes where at first I was completely bamboozled. Like, WTF?! But, I went back again…and again…and again. This debut single here comes courtesy of Goner Records.

Sagittaire Share Two Lovers Video

Patience is a skill oft overlooked in the rock n’ roll scene, but when done well, it allows the music to marinate, to really soak the listener in its emotional power…like this new track from Sagittaire. To me, it feels like the an electronic pulse, sent to the surface from some underwater research center, at least for the first fifteen seconds or so. Then, vocals walk into the show, again, keeping their distance in the presentation, almost like a ghostly echo hanging in the ether. You’re here for a minute or so, meditating, waiting as a percussive element move into the song, pushing into a more organic, beat-driven world. The Surraul directed video builds upon the layering of sound, with a stationary figure seemingly unaware of the world behind him, then moving into a blurring of the lines as the song gradually unfolds. Lucian and Caroline is the new LP; it will be out on October 13th.

Blues Lawyer Share Have Nots Video

It’s been a handful of months since Blues Lawyer dropped their All in Good Time LP, so why not just jump right on into the next bit of rock n’ roll? The band just announced a new 7″ for Dark Entries, and with that, they’ve got an accompanying video to get you excited. You’ll hear a constant drive from the guitar, with one ringing out for the song’s entirety, discordantly knifing its way in the distance. Still, the band’s bread and butter has always been to take those heavy edges and sweeten them, which is easily accomplished in the way the band combine vocals, mixing in this sugary sweetness. Also, there’s something about this track that totally reminds me of that Coyote Shivers tune atop Empire Records, only more dangerous! Sight Gags on the Radio drops on September 29th.

Tony Jay Share Isolated Visions

It’s probably early on in your day, if you’re reading this as I post it. If that’s the case, your day just got better, as there’s a fresh Tony Jay track to dive into right now. Even though the song takes on this mellower vibe, something about it feels adventurous, encouraging you to throw a knapsack over your shoulder and head off into wherever. Intertwining vocals from Michael Ramos and Karina Gill offer this sense of bewilderment, disorienting in the best possible way, begging you to bundle up tight and turn your headphones all the way up. There’s a moment in the song with some light shaker, and you can hear a little rattle in the snare, and for some reason, I just kept diving into that moment; there’s also a really sharp guitar line that sparkles right around 2:25 that stood out to me. More songs please! Tony Jay releases Perfect Worlds on September 15th via Slumberland.

Feeling Figures Announce Migration Music

Unsurprisingly, it sounds like K Records have another stellar release on their hands, this time with a new LP coming from Feeling Figures. For fans of the label, this new single feels precisely what I imagine it was like growing into a young adult with K’s catalog on your tape player. There’s almost this natural indifference to the churn of the guitars, riding the wind on the back of beat, waiting for the vocals to soar into picture. Nothing seems overdone or exaggerated for musical effect, tightly wound up around this simplistic DIY ethos. Plus, there’s plenty of open space here too, allowing the musicianship to frolic about in enchanting fashion. Old school vibes with new school flair; Migration Music is out November 15th!

Helpful People Share Title Track from Brokenblossom Threats

If I were to find faith in musical humanity, it has to be with people latching onto the latest from Helpful People, the duo of Carly Putnam and Glenn Donaldson. The track if fueled by this steady strum, almost muted in its notes, with little twinkles of keys or synths bubbling up from beneath to add some textural elements. Putnam’s voice is really special in this performance, never wavering from the solemnity that seems to drive each lyrical line. You can feel a bit of Glenn’s latest work slide in too, particularly in the middle of the tune where space opens up to this delighting musical excursion. Helpful People will release Brokeblossom Threats via Tall Texan on August 27th!

Brita Phillips and Kramer Share Video for Dream #3

Earlier this year, Shimmy Disc released this incredible Rings of Saturn Box Set; it was a collection of collaborative EPs in 7″ format, featuring tons of incredible artists like Brita Phillips (Luna/D&B) and Kramer. Now we’ve got an accompanying video for their track, created by none other than Kramer himself. The wash, or film style, takes on the dreaminess alluded to in the song’s lyrics, building on that sort of sleepy haze in your head. Musically, this song’s all about the careful tip-toeing of the vocals, creeping through your ears with sparkling melody that you’ll definitely find touching. Plus, there’s added bonus points for Austin’s Thor Harris fleshing out the textures with light marimba work! Rings of Saturn is available now!

The Native Cats Announce New LP, Share My Risks is Art

I was really stoked when the Native Cats got their whole back catalog up on the DSPs, but I honestly wasn’t expecting Chloe and Julian to jump out with a fresh record too! If you’re new to the band, you’ll hear them as the kindred spirits of modern post-punk, or maybe as a band looking back on that classic era of club punk from the early 2000s. For me, I find them straddling that territory, and as ever, making it entirely their own. It’d be easy to pull off the Rapture and throw frantic cymbal work all over this…and I’d love it. But, I love it more that that’s not where they travel; they seem more intent on using Chloe’s vocals to stake claim to the risks one takes as an artist, and more importantly, as a human being you can’t file or label. It’s bewildering and powerful, immediately making me run back and play it just to get it in my head again. They’ll release the Way on is the Way Off via Chapter Music on November 10th.
