The Tubs Share Wretched Life Single

Having covered the previous singles from the Tubs, I wasn’t totally sold on this new one until I caught the write-up from Stereogum, as they’re always the gatekeepers of cool. So, I jumped right onto that ship, and here we are, with another great track from the group. Having spent a lot of time with bands like The Black Watch, this tune’s right up my alley; it sounds like the soundtrack to a dance put on by the school’s local Dungeon’s and Dragons Club. It’s got a little goth tinge to it, though the guitar licks still remain absolutely sharp, even boisterous for brief bursts. Their album Dead Meat is out on January 27th via Trouble in Mind Records.

Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward Prep Happy Hearts

Every time I feel a bit detached from the Austin music scene and the hype, I realize that somewhere out there, Jad Fair (of Half Japanese) is working on something brilliantly charming, just penning song after song because there’s no point after that. This go round, he’s continuing his prolific last few years with a new project with Iowan Samuel Locke Ward. Personally, this is the sort of rock I gravitate towards, and sort of always have. Songwriting is perfect, simple and just the right moments for melody, though the song seems to capture little imperfections, or so it seems, giving off just the slightest sense of being an oddball in a pop world. I’ll always root for stuff like this, which is why I’m looking forward to hearing the whole of the duo’s Happy Hearts LP, out February 10th via Kill Rock Stars.

Spiral XP Share Deja Vu Video

When I first turned on this new track from Seattle’s Spiral XP, I was feeling pretty targeted. The track comes in immediately with these soaring guitars, crashing, hinting at angular notes, though also with a penchant for 90s college rock vibes; the rollicking drums give the music just enough edge to hit hard. Suddenly, the curtain opens on the vocals and there’s this gooey sweetness pouring through my speakers, softened tones curling around inner ear. It’s like playful noise rock, toying with you by presenting as loud and boisterous, but secretly melodious and covered in hooks. The group will release their new It’s Been a While EP on February 17th via Danger Collective.

Jackie Mendoza Drops New Video

I’m always going to give Jackie Mendoza some love on this site, particularly when I can kickstart your day with a fun bit of solid gold pop. This song’s narrative circles around a love story from a youthful perspective, albeit one going on during a pandemic; the young couple is just excited to go off on a dream vacation, and there, they get “Maui’d.” Sure, the lyrics are silly at times, but who gives a shit; there’s a rad hook throughout, which kicks a nice bounce through your speakers…clearly I’m a sucker for it. Jackie’s new album Galaxia de Emociones drops on March 4rd via ZZK Records.

Doom Flower Release Sweep Video

Going back through all the incredible tunes from early in 2023, I’m reminded that Doom Flower still feels like this hidden gem folks haven’t latched onto quite yet. Having just released Limestone Ritual, this video is a reminder of the darkened haunts that pop music will creep around. Immediately, the video and the sound immerse you in a heavy wash, creating this almost industrial vibe, awaiting Jess Price’s entrance. When Price comes in, her voice lifts the ambiance, albeit just a wee bit; her voice rises, but then almost seems to fade as syllables and lines end, being washed over by the waves of music (and visuals). Be sure to delve into this whole LP, out now via Record Label Records.

Bratty Release New Single ft. Nsqk and Mene

A new year is upon us, and RayRay and I won’t shy away from our love of Spanish pop, like this brand new tune from Mexico’s Bratty. Despite the linguistic difference, you can slide this track right alongside any of the adored acts in the States; it holds a gentle melody, light jangles and this sort of dreaminess that ties it to trends from the 80s. In this song we also get to hear the voices of other rising Mexican artists Nsqk and Mene, who both lend their help to Bratty here. If you’re digging these bits, then check out the Es Mi Fiesta y Si Quiero Hago Un EP, which is out today!

Classic Debut Calls You Home Video

I wanted to wrap up your day with this striking new tune from Australia’s Classic, which is the project helmed by Ashley Bundang. Currently, she’s preparing for the release of Did You Have Fun for early next year, and this song’s going to whet your whistle. I love how the musical structure of the track leaves a huge open space for the vocal work, as that’s the draw you’ll find immediately. There’s hints of psychedelia hanging in the air, but I feel as if singer Christie Crawford is channeling this sort of powerful seductress; you feel as if you’re incapable of pulling yourself away from the tune, like a siren drawing you ashore…or home in this case. It’s a song that hangs on your mind through the day, just like those crisp guitar notes holding it all together. If you’re looking to be beautifully haunted into the end of your day, spend some time here; Did You Have Fun will drop via Blossom Rot upon the new year!

Packs Share Abalone Video

The last time I caught Packs was when they blew through Austin with Good Morning; we all shared the legendary Armadelo, though that footage sadly didn’t make it into the band’s new video. This track, a brand new single for Fire Talk/Royal Mountain, features the group’s knack for weaving these slow-burning riffs that snake through your speakers, with little background nuances sliding into the fray to bring in the full-band effect following their stripped down Woah EP. Definitely excited to see what’s in store for the group going forward, as they’ve clearly had a productive season, which sounds like its already paying dividends.

Das Kope Shares Pacific Coast Highway

You’re stuck in your room and dreaming of a long drive down the ocean front, so why not write a track about that stretch of road. In the case of Das Kope, that’s just what was done in regards to new single Pacific Coast Highway. The single continues with the mixture of deep electronica and sunny beach vibes, both likely influencing Das Kope from either his home in Brazil or Los Angeles; the song even takes on a little bit of a catchy tropicalia groove in its latter half before sliding back into the oozy dream state. Oh, and the accompanying video is a chilled out visual experience all to itself, continuing the artistry of the project.

Jackie Mendoza Announces Galaxia de Emociones

When Jackie Mendoza dropped her LuvHZ EP, folks were clamoring for her, and we too, were fortunate to get Jackie on a SXSW show at that time. Today, we finally get that long awaited long-player, titled Galaxia de Emociones. Personally, I love how Jackie seems to balance the pop stylings of Latinx pop-stars of the moment, while still building in crafty samples and beats; it’s almost like its built for those dark corners of late night dance clubs. That thick beat has me salivating at what’s in store when this LP drops next Spring via ZZK Records, so turn it up and let that beat drop!
