Blood Return with Self Improvement Single

After delivering their rad Bye Bye EP, former Austin outfit Blood return with this rad new single to satiate your needs. This tune plays upon the group’s ability to reign in the cacophony of feuding noise and bringing it to a driving center, flirting with just the barest hint of melody. Like the song, the video encompasses the frantic nature, with images and clips overlapping and growing on your screen, matching the musical eruptions spewing forth from the group’s amps. Clearly their move to Philly is paying off as the band now have the backing of Fire Talk on their new single; hard work pays off kids.

Blues Lawyer Share Chance Encounters

It’s been a few years since we’ve gotten our hands on a solid Blues Lawyer LP, but it looks like 2023 will finally bring us all a little bit of joy by way of All in Good Time. Feedback opens the door for pounding rhythm sections to toss us right into the mix, with the guitars knifing in form the distance and steadying the noise simultaneously. You’ll find the vocals hanging themselves out to dry on this pure pop clothesline; there are certain notes just dangling on the ends with this joyous melody. There’s even a little aid from backing vocals, all before the song wrestles with a furious stomp that helps bring it to a close; it’s rad to see the band not missing a beat despite a little bit of an absence. They drop the new LP on February 17th via Dark Entries.

Bad Bad Hats Share Super America Video

It’s Friday, so you likely need something to brighten your day, especially if you’re around Austin and seeing the drizzle drip down your window. So, why not celebrate with the Bad Bad Hats; the band are dropping this fresh video of their hit single “Super America,” which features a remastered take on the band’s song from a decade ago. Originally, the song popped up on their It Hurts EP, but that’s ten years past, so we’ve got to throw it a birthday party, with this heavily catchy tune. It’s a reminder of the band’s ability to sprinkle hook after hook into their songwriting…and might it even encourage you to listen to their most recent LP, Walkman? Tap your toes, spin about, take these pop vibes into your weekend.

Dancing with Abracadabra’s Talk Talk

Sometimes I have to remind myself that there really is no point in feigning to be cool or pretend like I’m some magical gatekeeper of indie cool. Instead, I’m merely here every day or so to promote jams that I’m loving, and right now, I’m grooving with this new tune from Abracadabra. This Oakland outfit is throwing out some Caribbean beats fused with elements of post-punk and crafty early beat work from the likes of ESG. Plus, they spin it with these playful vocals that ultimately make you feel like you’re the cool one just for partaking in this dance party. Put down your cool patch and slide right into this tune on your way to super fun times. Their album, Shapes & Colors drops in January via Melodic.

Swansea Sound Share Video for Music Lover

A few weeks back we shared a new single from our friends in Swansea Sound; it was a stellar rock number attached to a Christmas single for the Holidays. Well, the band enjoy keeping things old-school DIY, and they’ve made their own video with the song’s stars: Daniel Ek, The Zuck, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. The video features raining Bitcoin running like a spinning slot machine, with Ek, Bezos and the Zuck banging out the tune. But, you’ve got to wait for Elon’s dance solo near the song’s end. So, before you run out and post your Spotify Festival lineup, jam to someone still willing to take the piss out of the man! Oh…and keep in mind that the EP comes with a signed Christmas Card…and let’s not forget their label Skep Wax is also responsible for reissuing all those great Heavenly LPs, which I forgot to mention weeks ago.

Balmorhea Film the Wind Live in Marfa

Over the last few decades, instrumental music, be it ambient or post-rock or what-have-you, has really made its moment known on the independent music scene. And, Austin’s been home to some of the best, like Explosions in the Sky and Balmorhea. But, what I’ve always loved about Balmorhea is their attention to performance spaces as part of their craft, which the world will get to see tomorrow when their new film, The Wind – Live in Marfa is released unto the world, courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon. RG Lowe and Michael Muller brought along some old friends like Aisha Burns to record the entirety of the record at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, and the cavernous feel of the space playing into the sound reminds me of the time I caught the group on a quiet night at the Austin Ballet. If, like me, you marvel at the intersection between music and performance, then be sure you get a chance to watch this film. DG will be streaming the incredible performance for free for 72 hours starting tomorrow, with a digital soundtrack following Friday!

King Tuff Shares Portrait of God Video

When I think of King Tuff, I tend to think of his heavy garage rock riffs and distinctive voice; it’s just a sound that was super memorable during his earlier periods, not to mention some great live sets. But, with his new record, he’s taken the fuzz down a bit, or perhaps turned it up and left the heaviness at home. In his latest single, the song takes on more of a pub rock vibe, kind of stomping through the verses with this crooning bad-assery. But, when the tune opens up in the chorus, it turns more towards a kind of open bit of psychedelic pop, taking on more melody than I admittedly expected. It seems like the gaps between releases have allowed the songwriter to mix it up a bit, so I’m excited to see where Smalltown Stardust lands when it drops in January via Sub Pop.

Daily Worker Announces Autofiction + Shares Irish Goodbye

What a great Tuesday! We’re pleased to share that Daily Worker, an Austin act helmed by Harold Whit Williams of Cotton Mather, has signed to one of our favorite labels Bobo Integral; it’s great when our worlds collide! With that, there’s a new single; it’s built upon this stomping beat, steady and forceful. That marching power allows the crispiness of the guitars to ring out, sounding somewhere between modern jangle and old school psychedelic, leaving plenty of open space for Williams to weave his lyrical majesty. The black and white video also gives a nod to to Harold’s lyrical gifts, as I’m pretty sure I spotted his A Rain Ancestral poetry collection in there! Autofiction will be out on February 3rd!

Connections Prep Cool Change

We’ve got tons of coverage on Connections here on our site, going way way back. But, last week they made us super happy, announcing a new record, again on our fave, Trouble in Mind Records. They dropped a single with the below video, highlighting the juxtaposition between nature and humanity. Personally, this feels like a road trip, from the backseat of my dad’s car. There’s something in the hurried jangling that rings through the speakers that feels like the world zooming by quickly, with an earnest singer soothing my soul through the headphones of my old Walkman. While it might give me some nostalgic daydreams, the label and the band are constant evolving with the new sounds, so be sure to keep your ears peeled for Cool Change, coming your way in March.

Pete Astor Shares New Religion Video

About a month back, legendary Pete Astor (The Loft/The Weather Prophets) dropped a new record, Time on Earth, which received great praise from all over the indie sphere. Today, we’re here to share the video for “New Religion,” which is features footage of Astor, layered atop other video samples, with a mix of common objects. It brings to mind what Pete has said about the track, tossing out the line “we have all sorts of things to believe in…Johnny Thunders…Golden Dawn…I just sing about it;” it’s a sort of hodgepodge where we’re all actively seeking to find our footing in the world. Musically, you’ve got to stick around for the chorus, as it’s worth the price of entry alone. Astor’s heavy tones in the verse quickly spin into this more ethereal melody, churning out a hook that you’ll be humming throughout the day. Time on Earth is now available via Tapete Records.
