Crystal Eyes Drop Don’t Turn Around Video

This Crystal Eyes tune’s been floating around for a few days, but it’s delightful feel totally has me circling back to listen again and again. The drum work is really the driving force of the tune, with the string elements pulsing and gyrating, though often muted in the mix. All of that allows for Erin Jenkins to offer these vocals that feel almost rushed, like she’s hurrying to run these lyrics through your ears. I love the 2 minute mark jet off into a more chaotic pop feel, tugging the song into this territory that feels nostalgic and timeless all at once. The band release The Sweetness Restored on April 22nd via Bobo Integral.

Papercuts Share Lodger Single

I feel like Jason Quever is that person at the cool kids party, sipping his drink in the corner and taking mental notes at the chaos that surrounds him; he’s not bothered by the madness, though seemingly content to play the narrator and not the protagonist. Every time I listen to his work in Papercuts, I feel like he’s watching us, building this cinematic musical landscape of the darkened corners of our lives; though when he’s there, he extracts the beauty in those hidden moments, breathing life into our mundane world with his own brand of psychedelic pop. He’ll be releasing the new album, Past Life Regression, on April 1st via Slumberland Records.

Cola Announce Deep View

Cola‘s album announcement is yesterday’s news, and it came with this great video here, so I couldn’t just ignore it. That, and well, I’m a huge Tim Darcy stan, so it definitely is fitting over here. Honestly, this doesn’t feel too far off from Ought, those there’s a little bit more softness on the notes here, hints at sunnier melodies lurking. Darcy’s performance in the chorus feels a touch like Travis Morrison, adding emphasis without really stretching his pipes too far. All of it feels like the next logical step for Darcy and his new band, as you could feel him toying more with melody as Ought progressed. But, there’s still this bit of wildness in his songwriting, and if he keeps that, Deep View‘s going to be a surefire hit; it’s out on Fire Talk on May 20th.

Jeanines Announce New Album, Don’t Wait for a Sign

This is the best Wednesday news I never expected! New Jeanines! The band today announce Don’t Wait for a Sign, doing so with a spritely pop ditty to hum in your head all day. There’s this timelessness in Alicia’s performance here, her voice rising and falling, always hitting the perfect pop notes. Those looking for the perfect piece of indiepop won’t find a better tune nodding to the past and living in the present of the genre. The brevity is perfect too, as you can circle back and fall even further in love with each repeated listen, as I’ve been doing the last hour or so. Don’t Wait for a Sign is the fifth release from Slumberland Records this year, and the fifth that’s certainly going to end up on my shelf; the hits just keep on coming.

Star Party Share Shot Down Video

It’s a wonderful year for fuzzy pop records, and we’re only two months in; we’ve got the new Artsick and Kids on the Crime Spree LPs, then on the horizon is this new Star Party. They’re getting some Shop Assitants/Black Tambo nods, and I don’t mind that, but to me, it feels like they’ve taken Talulah Gosh, injected it with amphetamines, then recorded it in a ramshackle tin shed. It’s strikingly melodic, despite the chaotic tendencies, and you can’t help but be charmed by the accompanying video, either. Energetic and punchy, hook-laden and fun…all of which makes me excited to add another great pop album to my collection this year! Meadow Flower is out March 11th via Feel It/Tough Love.

Tim Kasher Announces Middling Age

Tim Kasher is one of those songwriters who I take for granted; I’ve been a fan of Cursive and his solo work (Good Life + TK), but he’s been so prolific, that I sometimes overlook an album, coming to it later. I won’t be skipping over his new LP, Middling Age, perhaps because I have a sneaking feeling the tunes will hit home lyrically as I’m nearing the same age as Tim. His first single from the new LP is strikingly stark, with perfect accents made by the backing vocals of Megan Siebe. Listening through, its like meeting up with an old friend after an absence, only to find you don’t skip a beat, as close as ever, grateful for that companionship. If you find Tim Kasher as a life-companion, like me, look for Middling Age on April 15 via Passenger Records.

This little visualizer will help you immerse yourself in the band’s psychedelic journey, always with a bit of a pop twist around the corners. Too easy to tell you who it sounds like, and yet enjoying it too much to say its merely a copycat. Just wanted my head, and yours, to buzz a little bit as we peaked into today, so go ahead and get lost in here with me.

Whimsical Share Rewind Video

We’re going to have ourselves a little Shelflife party over here at ATH, which is completely okay, as it’s one of my favorite labels. Earlier we had that hot Salt Lake Alley tune, and now we bring you the latest from the dream-gaze outfit, Whimsical. The video, like the song, is definitely shrouded in a bit of denseness, with the guitars churning out this wall of noise that serves as the background; the video uses slow pacing and these similarly heavy color tones to match that vibe. Musically, Krissy Vanderwoude’s voice is able to pierce the shroud of darkness, delivering this pulsing bit of melody that shimmers on the surface, as this genre should. If you dig it, Melt will be out on April 1st.

Frontperson Announce New LP, Parade

When you are involved in various other acts, like the New Pornographers (Kathryn Calder) or Woodpigeon (Mark Andrew Hamilton), its got to be difficult to lay down the pieces to a new Frontperson LP. There were, of course, other barriers like a pandemic and pregnancy, but now all the pieces have come together and the duo have announced Parade. This track is like a tricked out pop gem, something that doesn’t seem too far away from Kathryn’s other gig. There’s this synthetic key work that plays the role of the background, then it seems like everything else, including the vocals gets layered down bit by bit, building the texture into something full and enlightening. Personally, I dig the restraint, as it would have been easy to sell a hook in this, but they hold it back, letting the layers and the overlapping melodies build that joyous sensation for listeners. Parade is out April 29th via Oscar St Records/WIAIWYA.

Bodega Drop Statuette on the Console

While the typical Bodega single brandishes art-punk with Ben up front, the latest tune from the band features Nikki Belfligio leading on vocals, totally changing the dynamic of the band with her performance. Angular guitar punk is out the window, turning towards a more anthemic power pop vibe, just riffing right through the hooks once the track jumps into play. But, it wouldn’t be Bodega if they weren’t calling our attention to our “dependence on fragile, fleeting technology.” Love this band, but this track takes their work to a whole new level that I’m hoping you’ll dig. Broken Equipment drops on March 11th via What’s Your Rupture.
