Blushing Drop Sour Punch Video

Remember when we released Blushing‘s Weak EP? Yeah…seems like years ago…I think it was. But, the band have just been crushing it through their hard work and dedication to bringing out the best in the dreamy brand of shoegaze. This new single from their forthcoming Possessions continues to show the band letting melody and noise co-habitate inside their songs; you can’t listen to a moment without the wall of distortion washing over you, battling with Christina’s vocals for the listener’s attention. Honestly, every new song this lot writes seems to just raise the bar a bit higher than it was before. Possessions is out next February via Kanine Records, followed by a West Coast tour with other local greats Letting Up Despite Great Faults.

 

Ryan Pollie Shares Don’t Lie Single

Friday, you’ll be able to get your hands on Ryan Pollie‘s new LP, Stars, dropping courtesy of Forged Artifacts/Mapache; but, before you get there, why not tease you with one final single to lead you with a trail of joy. There’s this beautiful fragility to the tune, carried with a sense of uncertainty in the lyrical content. Every time I press play, I feel like this is the journey I’d be on if I’d grown up an emo kid with a penchant for covering Grateful Dead songs; there’s something about both sides of that coin that seem to reside in this single…and frankly, I think that’s stunning, so I can’t stop pressing play here. Don’t forget the LP drops Friday.

Wah Together Drop 7″

I’m surprised given the pedigree of the members in Wah Together that the band aren’t getting more hype; the group features members of Longwave, LCD Soundsystem and the Rapture, so they’re cool in my book before they even started singing. But, with Jaiko Suzuki on vocals, singing in Japanese, the band take this blend of sort of skronky post-punk and rev it up into this mashing of pop and noise. It’s this swirling mixture where drums crash heavily while the rhythm section spastically pushes you forward, all of it circling around the gravitational pull of Suzuki. I can totally get behind this; you can too buy grabbing the 7″ from the band HERE. They’ll have an album out next year via Dedstrange in March.

Reptaliens Drop I Feel Fine

Another January release I’m excited about here is the new LP from Portland’s Reptaliens. Now, with this record, the full songwriting was paired down to just Cole and Bambi Browning, and while I’ve enjoyed previous releases, the switch in approach seems to have provided the perfect vehicle for Bambi’s voice. There’s just something coyly playful, but also sort of indifferent in the way each lyric is dropped out there into the world. Her performance in the chorus takes on a softer melodic tone, but I think it has a stunning contrast, giving the sound this sort of solid base to carry on its own adventures. Those little nuances included a mix of spaced guitar licks battling for space with the surfier nots, both constantly pushing to keep track with the voice. This is for sure a tune and a half! Multiverse is out on January 21st via Captured Tracks.

New Video/Single From Film School

If you’ve read the pages of ATH over the years, you must know that we are all huge fans of Los Angeles based outfit Film School. The band recently dropped their 6th studio album entitled We Weren’t Here just this past September which has seen heavy rotation around our offices. Of course if you have yet to check out the new album, might I recommend you hit play on this new single/video for album track “Said Your Name” to give yourself a reason to check out the entire full length. Overall things have a very new wave vibe in both sound and visual but also with that intimate, shoegaze touch we know and love from Film School.

Stutter Steps Shares Lift Video

Ben Harrison recently released his Lift/The Bend 7″ under the Stutter Steps moniker, and today we’re here to encourage your listening by sharing the new video for the A-side. The video was shot on Super 8 by Dan Finegold, giving this sort of grainy feel to the visual presentation, which covers a lot of scenic shots featuring Ben and his guitar. One of the reasons I love the video and the track is that the two seem really complimentary. The song has this Americana feel, but with Harrison, he adds a bit more bravado and punch, brining in some of his power-pop stylings from earlier releases; it fits well with lots of striking landscape work, tying the two pieces together. Nightlands Shares Wonder Reprise Video

Nightlands will be releasing the Moonshine EP next week via Western Vinyl, and what the project is offering up seems pretty interesting, at least when you see it as a stop-gap between records. We got a Brinsley Schwarz cover, and now we get this more ethereal piece. At times, it feels like the track is this sort of dreamscape, with twinkling little nuances swirling to create this special soundscape that definitely feels like an expanse…be it frontier or space…it’s just this massive space that lets your mind wonder, which is perfect for this time of the year. Let your mind drift and enjoy the new tune.

Pleased to Meet You: Chew Magna

To be fair, I’ve covered various works from the members of Chew Magna, which features folks who’ve played in Butcher the Bar and Songs for Walter. But, in this new line-up, you get something a bit heavier and a bit more brash, which I’m clearly not against! While the shattering noise that opens the song leans towards a brand of noise rock, the song quickly settles into this driving rhythm with vocals pouring forth in a steady fashion. As the song progresses, guitars and vocals skitter this way and that, fueled by the energetic pulse of the track. Definitely are some solid comparisons to old school post-hardcore meets early indie rock grooves…so find yourself in love here. Rumor has it that there’s an LP on the horizon.

Sad Eyed Beatniks Announce Claudia’s Ethereal Weaver

There’s probably not a scene hotter, in my opinion, than what’s going on in San Francisco right now, and you can add Sad Eyed Beatniks to the mix of projects ready to make their name with new LPs. Kevin Linn and his project just announced Claudia’s Ethereal Weaver this last week via Meritorio, with a scheduled release for January in the new year. Our first song comes by this great video created by Mike Ramos and Karina Gill (both hot commodities on their own!). It begins with the faint sound of chimes blowing in the wind, which creates this sort of expansive openness to the tune. Just after the 30 second mark the rhythm section launches in, providing these overlapping jangling guitar lines; it honestly sounds like what you’d expect to hear from an indiepop version of Joan of Arc (and I don’t mind that one bit!). Loving that sound combined with Linn’s voice, and with it goes another quick $15 I’m personally donating to the San Fran scene; you can grab a copy HERE.

Marissa Paternoster Shares Final Single from Peace Meter

This Friday Don Giovanni will be dropping Marissa Paternoster‘s proper debut as a solo artist, and we’ve been covering the singles all along the way. I’m excited by the album because I feel like we’re really getting some insight into Paternoster’s life, and while its been there before, it feels much more intimate and relatable in the presentation of this record. Musically, this song seems full, yet stripped down. The mix feels peeled back like the layers of an onion, leaving us with the core that is Marissa’s unique voice driving the emotional pull of the track. Peace Meter drops Friday, so be sure to check it out, grab it, you know, support your favorite artists.
