New Music from Why Bonnie

It’s always nice to hear from old friends, so here we are with the latest single from Why Bonnie, formerly a staple of Austin’s music scene. This new single is the first thing we’ve heard from the band since their last EP, and the promising vibe here will hopefully make its way onto a new LP. I love how the band hold some resolve in this recording; Blair’s voice rises and seems to sink out this sort of climactic explosion…and to be fair…it’s there, but held back just enough to not overstep the selling point, which is undoubtedly Howerton’s voice. Let’s hope this new single signals more tunes!

Kids On A Crime Spree Announce Fall In Love Not In Line

It’s been a hot minute since Kids On A Crime Spree dropped their debut We Love You So Bad EP, though they’ve managed to sprinkle in a 7″ here or there. Luckily, a wait for new music has paid off, with the band announcing today that they’ll be releasing a new LP, Fall In Love Not In Line, early next year. The band wastes no time opening up with this fast shredding guitar line and a furiously pounding rhythm section, both parts trying to see who can beat the other to the finish line. But, central to the band’s success is Mario Hernandez’ vocals, offering up this soft melodic underbelly to the track, though still seemingly tethered to a faint punk ethos that keeps the song’s edge. Feel like the thematic nod from the lyrics ties perfectly into all of our lives, and also into the band itself, with the refrain of “when can I see you again.” Pretty sure this song rules, and you’re going to want to grab the LP! Fall In Love Not In Line drops on January 22nd via Slumberland Records.

Massage Announce Lane Lines EP

As much as I love Austin, San Francisco seems the place to be for music this year…and Massage is just one of the many bands having made a name for themselves. They’ve already release Still Life, which I raved about over here, but now we’ve got the Lane Lines EP on the horizon for December. Honestly, this new single might be one of my favorites, as it feels like this weirdly logical step from New Order’s Republic, just building in a little more jangle to things, not to mention the nice little female backing vocal nod. If you haven’t spent anytime with this band, then now’s your chance to correct that, and this song couldn’t be a better way to move right on in on the band’s great work. Lane Lines EP is out December 1st via Mt. St. Mtn.

Buffet Lunch Share Cheeks Video

Fresh off the release of their stunning The Power of Rocks LP, Scottish outfit Buffet Lunch have returned with their brand new 7″, and today we get a video for the A-Side! I love how this entire 7″ is exploring the weirder elements of the band’s sound; the more skronk and textured side if you will. It’s just taking that sort of post-punk brand and getting a little weirder, which we need. Plus, speaking of strange, take a moment to marvel at the incredible video; it’s all combined with the pop-centric cacophony swirls about in attempt to warp your brain…in the best of ways of course! The new 7″ is available today from Upset the Rhythm!

New Stuff from Solidarity Club Records: 2 Am Wake Up Call + Rat Fancy

Bandcamp Friday should be about supporting your friends and making sure they get some ample love; we’ve all got bills to pay, right? Well, our friends over at Solidarity Club (also delicious coffee roasters!) have just signed on to work with 2 Am Wake Up Call, so they’re sharing a brand new video from the act. It’s a rambunctious little rocker, and for someone who grew up in the Y2K hysteria, somewhat nostalgic too, particularly when it comes to the video. But, along with the new signing, the label is also putting out a Deluxe Edition of Rat Fancy‘s Stay Cool album, which features label-owner Gregory. All the proceeds from that release will go to legal funds associated with the singer’s official name change to Shawn Barraza; they’re great humans, so we’re here to lift that up! Check the video, and stream Stay Cool, and help where you can!

Skeggs Drop Bunny Man Video

RayRay and I are both huge fans of Aussie outfit Skeggs, and today the band just drop one of those rippers that you can’t get out of your head; it feels like the sort of anthemic arena rock that everyone who loves a good jam could get behind. Despite the heavy riffs that kick it off, it quickly takes those tones and turns them really light and sunny, which lends itself well to the overall hook. Plus, the video is an homage to the band’s touring manager Bunny Man, and they’re donating all money made from this song to their entire tour crew. So, not only is it a killer pop rock jam, but it’s also got good sentiment. This goes out to all the crews out there!

Cola Sign with Fire Talk (former members of Ought)

Man, I’m a huge Tim Darcy fan, so hearing that Ought are calling it a day is a bit sad; the band had a solid run that I’m grateful is part of my collection…not to mention the great shows I’ve caught. Luckily, with the announcement of their disbandment comes news of Cola, a new project featuring Tim and Ben) is very much welcome on my end…particularly as they’re sprinkling it in with a new single courtesy of Fire Talk. Honestly, hearing the song and the way that it sort of feels like a meditative state feels very much like the next logical step. Hints of playing with the expanse of sonic exploration was always on the cards, but this feels somewhat leaning into that a bit further, tossing in some melodic undercurrents too to maximize the charm. This sounds like a crash between Ought and Broken Social Scene, and I don’t mind that one bit.

Papercuts Return with Try Baxter’s Bliss

I can’t tell you how long I’ve loved Jason Quever and Papercuts…probably a few years before we got this whole little site going. Sometimes Jason will lay dormant, working on perfecting other people’s tunes. But, whenever he pops up out of his musical burrow, I just get these little tingles under my skin. Today we get news that there’s a brand new digital EP on the horizon, and I’m already sitting here raving about the first single. His vocal performance alone this round was enough to get me, especially the way Quever’s voice rises in the chorus, stretching his notes, almost to Thom Yorke territory. Fortunately, he’s got this solemn pop that serves as the vessel for his striking voice, creating this otherworldly drift that seems like the perfect escape from everything troubling you. The Baxter’s Bliss EP is out on November 19th, and includes a few covers (Leonard Cohen and Galaxie 500).

Courtesy Release Video for Spots

I’m going to be real honest here. Until they reached out, Courtesy was not an act on my radar, but fuck I’m glad they did. They’re an outfit that just feels like a collective of musical adventurers, twisting and turning knobs, layering textures, adding loops and dropping in vocals where fitting; its like they’re out to pick up a sample here, mix in a new sound there, and all of it working perfectly. On this striking video, the accompanying track has this high pitch vocal in the middle that reminds me of Liars; it seems like they approach things in the same manner, and dare I say, seem even more willing to stretch the boundaries. And speaking of the video, can we praise Essian enough? I think not; this video gets knocked out of the park. If, like me, Courtesy are new to you, prepare yourself for one helluva ride when the band drop Check the Milk on November 19th!

Monsoon Drop Don’t Move Video

Felt like we should hit up Thursday by starting off with some catchy hooks and blasting riffs! Good thing we’ve got this tune from Athens’ (Georgia) Monsoon. This song works back and forth between a sedate ballad and a hook laden pop rock tune, adding in these great little details that give the tune a bit of flare. Plus, just as you’re hooked on the style, there’s this closing change in direction, hinting at some of the artistry that’s lurking in their forthcoming Ghost Party LP. The album will be out next year, so for now, you can sit back and enjoy this fresh single!
