Waves of Dread Share Another Single

Not too far off from the release of II by Waves of Dread, and with that, we get the next single as promised. This one begins in the band’s more traditional fashion, screeching guitars shattering that noise barrier from the get-go. Still, the vocals sink back into the mix, pulling back the covers on the band’s pop sensibility. The band still find some room for sonic experimentation too, though I’m quite partial to those high-noted sparkles around the 1 minute mark. I think the promise of this EP comes with all the toying around; the band still feels very young in the grand scheme of things, so they’re all about exploration within the confines of their musical tastes…and as of now…Im right there with them.

Another week and another single from the forthcoming II EP from Waves of Dread. This tune continues to illustrate the group’s expanding sound beyond their origins, while still leaving one foot in the realm of shoegaze. This one’s dreamy, but it almost feels like it kind of has some reference points to that sort of acid-house vibe, messy and explorative all at once. Still, when the song pulls back for the opening lyrics, the pop attributes pop their head up, delicately draping melody across the track. Stoked at the ever expanding palate of the group, and we expect to hear more next week as they’ve promised a single a week until the II EP drops!

Waves of Dread Share Foregone

For the most part, we’ve recognized Waves of Dread as this mysterious consortium crafting these noise filled gaze numbers; the sort you expect to ruin your eardrums in the live setting. But, with a new EP on the horizon, they’ve also begun to show their hand, and perhaps dip a toe or two into a more ethereal water. Not only is their latest single striking because of its brevity, it also has this billowing haunt to it, like a ghost from your past following you, your heart racing as you feel the hairs on your neck stand up…and then it fades out. I’m very interested to see how this all ties together when the group release II at the end of July.

Waves of Dread Share Deja Vu Single

It’s been a minute or so since Waves of Dread have shared anything new, but they’re back today with a brand new single, “Deja Vu.” Immediately, the song comes pounding in, smashing drums with fuzzy swirling through your speakers. But, more prominent is the band’s inclination to include some pop sensibility in this effort; it might just be the distant “ooh” in the chorus, but there’s surely an uplifting energy here. If you can’t hear it, just wait for the slowed little breakdown mid-track to hear what I’m hearing. I always enjoy what this bunch push out, so let’s hope we get more from the outfit in 2020!

Waves of Dread Share the Make Believe

Up until now, our experience with Waves of Dread have been all positive; they move back and forth between these billowing noise pop numbers and then the softer, seductive side of dreamy pop music…it looks like we get the latter with their new single “The Make-Believe.” It opens by leading us on a sort euphoric jaunt via soft chanting, all right before the guitar come in and cut it in to give a little shimmy and shake to the track; I think the vocals perfectly fall in line, shrouded just a little bit, though still carrying that swagger. In the latter half you have the group toying with the noisier side of their sound, though this track is surely a pop number. Give a listen.

More Heavy Pop from Waves of Dread

Behind the walls of distorted guitars usually lives a pop band, at least that seems to be the case when we’re talking about Waves of Dread. The band open their latest single building that noise wall, but it quickly recedes in favor of these calmly beautiful vocals; they stay steady and sit in the midst of everything around them. It’s almost like they’re building music in the vein of Teenage Fanclub, only with dreams of being on the heavier side of that musical spectrum; I’m pretty sure I love anything this group comes up with. If you grab it HERE, you get a bonus track, but you’ll have to wait until the 10th of December to hear the band’s new EP.

Fresh Waves of Dread Track

Out of nowhere, Waves of Dread have slowly started making a name for themselves; they even opened for Os Mutantes without even having an LP to their name. On the latest single from the group, I really love the melodic underbelly that works throughout. Sure, the guitars brandish this heavy bravado, but the “oohs” that seemingly run throughout the entire track are sure to keep you in check. Loud, soft, whatever, this is just a great song you can put on repeat for the rest of today…and tomorrow too. Hoping the group continue this rise with a completed LP real soon!

New Music from Waves of Dread

Somewhere out in Newcastle, Waves of Dread is building these magnificent pieces of pop music that I’ve found quite inescapable…particularly this latest single. It’s structured like a classic piece of collage-pop, with the guitars seemingly building tension, then other guitars cascade into the distance while the faintly audible vocals nonchalantly enter the picture. That building sensation doesn’t fade, however, and actually seems to build ominously…though the group never completely give in to your need for an emotional release, instead ambling in a different direction as the song fades into the distance. Truly want some music discovery, then come this way.

New Music from Waves of Dread

We don’t have too much info on the new project, Waves of Dread…we know they’re from Newcastle, and that they enjoy Brian Jonestown, Neil Young and Dinosaur Jr, though not necessarily in that order. We do know that this new single they’ve just dropped is a pretty special number, which hopefully means we’ll have more music tune. There’s an immediate fuzz emanating from your speakers as you press play, spliced with this beautiful harmonic performance on the vocals; they seem wrapped in the warmth of and underlying melody. Little touches of excess noise and vocal accompaniment pop in and out of the track, giving the song a fuller sound. Let’s hope there’s more on the way from this act.
