New Music from In Tall Buildings

tallestbuiltIf you’re looking to make your 2015 interesting, musically speaking, then I’m imploring you to take a listen to this new track from In Tall Buildings, then schedule picking up Driver, the new LP, on its release. This latest single shows the craftsmanship in the songwriting, creating these intricate little layers that serve as prime ear candy. The breath-y quality of the vocals also adds an interesting touch; it’s one of the many reasons I think you’ll find yourself peeling back layer after layer when you get a chance to get your hands on the full length; Western Vinyl is putting it out on February 17th.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith: Check It

katyIt’s really difficult to create something mesmerizing when you’re limiting yourself to the use of one instrument, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.  Her new effort, Euclid, has her spending studio hours working with a Buchla Music Easel synthesizer, throwing in really light touches of vocals in the distance.  That being said, this track’s more than just your average affair, showing an artist working to craft her own genre altogether.  For me, those little vocal moments really make the song something special, utilizing the gift of voice as another instrument in her textural work.  Look for the new record on January 20th via Western Vinyl.

Austin Spotlight: New Music from Abram Shook

coverIf you read our Top 15 Austin Albums of 2014, you hopefully saw that Abram Shook made our list, as he deservedly should.  But, I come today not to talk you into adoring his latest work, Sun Marquee, rather to look forward to what he’ll be offering in the future. In between LPs, Abram has decided to release some free digital tracks in a series, and we’ve got one of those tunes for you to listen to today.  I love the piano’s bounce here, giving the song an unenviable hook that few can create.  Of course, he coats the track in his trademark Western croon.  Be sure to donate a buck or more to the cause, so Mr. Shook can deliver an expected collection of new hits.

Song Premeire: Stone Jack Jones Announces New Album

sjjAfter several near death battles with blood-borne illnesses, Stone Jack Jones has returned to songwriting with a new passion. There’s an honesty to his tunes, placing his songs before listeners in a bare-bones fashion that begs for the audience to indulge in his craftsmanship.  Last year he released the stellar Ancestor via Western Vinyl, and he’s bringing you another of poetic melancholy titled Love & Torture, with a schedule release date of March 17th via WV.  Our first listen offers a gentle number with a bit of static splashing through your speakers, creating a chilling effect that only magnifies your listening experience.

Have a listen to “Slow Time Vultures” below.

New Album from In Tall Buildings

driverIt seems like time might have forgotten the work of Erik Hall and his project, In Tall Buildings; it’s been nearly four years since he last released his debut, but this opening track from his forthcoming LP sounds pretty remarkable.  There’s a pulsating opening, laying groundwork for the entry of Hall’s delicate vocals.  This track seemingly builds and builds, yet it always pulls back to offer up a really subtle bit of pop sensibility that’s sure to garner interest from all sorts of listeners.  Look for his new release, Driver, via Western Vinyl on February 17th.

Western Vinyl to Release New Elephant Micah Album

whereJust the other day I was lamenting the mellow sort of tunes that I fawn over and their absence.  Since that ridiculous statement, it seems I’ve been inundated with some folk-laden tunes that are really something, like this new song from Elephant Micah. The moniker serves as the musical vehicle for Joseph O’Connell, and he’s received countless accolades from all over the musical map, artists and outlets alike.  While his music has long seemed a great secret, his new album, Where In Our Woods, will see a release on Western Vinyl early next year.  Take a journey with this number.

Exclusive Premiere: Balmorhea Single Remastered

balmorheaThere’s been a lot of press lately for Austin’s Balmorhea, as the band readies a new 7″ on Western Vinyl.  But, not only do you get to hear some new songs, but the label is also re-releasing a remastered version of their self-titled masterpiece.  The song below, “Baleen Morning,” was already a beautiful piece, but the remastering touch ups has added even more power and emotion to the band’s construction; I love how you can hear the buzz of the strummed guitar sings.  There’s a beautiful ornate quality that really shines through with the remastering, reminding listeners how incredibly lucky we are to have a band crafting such music.  You can pick up the remastered version (as well as the new 7″) HERE.  And look for a chance to win tickets to the group’s show at Central Presbyterian on 10/24.

Austin Spotlight: Hear the 2nd Tune off the Balmorhea’s New 7″

balmoeNot long ago, we posted “Heir I,” one of the first new tracks we’ve heard from Austin’s Balmorhea in some time.  It was part of a special 7″ they’re releasing in conjunction with the vinyl reissue of their debut LP, which is all being handled by Western Vinyl.  This new piece is really exquisite; it captures the beauty the band has always created, but they seem to be experimenting with a little bit of discord; I like that touch.  Still, the building string arrangements that crash upon your ears are the 4.12 mark are just, well, incredible.  It’s clear that great care and thought have gone into the construction of this number, so hats off to that. The re-issue and the Heir 7″ both hit stores on October 14th.

Song Premiere: New Tune from Glass Ghost

glassesThe folks in Dirty Projectors and Here We Go Magic have been crafting arty pop music for some time now, and several members of said groups have united again to continue their work as Glass Ghost.  Tomorrow the band will release their album Lyfe on the heralded Western Vinyl, and it’s being met with much anticipation…from us especially.  In this single, you’ll find those arty elements, including little touches of sampling and quality lyrical writing.  There’s creativity in the songwriting that you’re not likely to find in other corners of the indie genre.  Be sure to pick up your copy this week.
