Last Week’s Jams (5.29 – 6.2)

Felt like we covered a whole lot of territory last week, which was mostly me just working super hard to keep myself occupied over summer vacation. There were so many great songs that I felt people overlooked in the big indie world, such as the new stuff from Wireheads and Big Blood. Or maybe you can go on with the old dependable from Balmorhea, the Clienteleor High Water Marks. Going back through, definitely appreciating stuff like the Sheeps track and the Chopper tune too, so you’ve got plenty to be excited about when you burn through this playlist. Get on it.

Wireheads Share Killer Bee

Dammit if this song from Wireheads hasn’t seeped into my subconscious, haunting all my listening for the rest of the day. When I first heard this track, I immediately felt like it sounded like what the Television Personalities could have evolved into had they come of age in the last few decades. There’s this brilliant bit of light jangling, , but it’s totally relaxed on the couch jangling, like it knows just how cool it fucking sounds. While the indifference is enchanting, the seduction comes in the way the vocals combine to churn out these little sparkling melodic diamonds for your ears. If you think this song is as rad as I do, then by all means, grab their new LP, Potentially Venus from Tenth Court on June 23rd.

Last Week’s Jams (5.1 – 5.5)

Last week started off with a smattering of great tunes, but I’ll admit to wearing out by week’s end…for some reason just felt like there wasn’t a whole lot out there tugging at me! We were really excited to share some great ATX stuff like the latest from Feeling Small and Johanna Heilman…with Alien Eyelid‘s great new single just a few hours away from our home base. Lots of acts we’ve been harping on had new singles, like Daisies, The Soft Walls; we also got a new single from one of our SXSW raves, Lifeguard. Oh, and we’re starting off with the Particles, as we’re over the moon they’re getting some reissue treatment from Chapter Music.

Wireheads Share Hook Echo Video

I was immediately hooked on the latest track from Wireheads, particularly when that riff just drops in out of the ambiance and delivers that crunchiness I crave. Having been mostly quiet since 2017’s Lightning Ears, this definitely seems like the band have returned without missing a beat, keeping that edge and tenacity in the songwriting. What I appreciate here, however, is that you get this little curl of cool from Dom Trimboli’s steadied vocal delivery; the band add backing vocals in just the right spots, allowing the syllables to latch onto the faintest hook and keep pop elements lurking in the group’s work. Sure, there’s jagged edges on the surface, but crack through and you’ll hear a band centered on writing playful pop songs like all the rest! If you’re digging it, then be sure to check out Potentially Venus, the newest album out June 23rd via Tenth Court Records.

Last Week’s Jams, Today (6.27 – 7.1)

Our coverage last week was pretty steady, and we got to hear some great new stuff…so here we are with our weekly recap to start off your post holiday blues at work. We got some great ATH favorites offering up new stuff, with Winter and Phantom Handshakes getting fresh tunes out there. We also ran some great footage from Constant Follower of their performance atop a monument in Scotland, which I highly suggest you getting into, so I threw a jam in there from that performance. Lot of great stuff, with over an hour of jams to whet your whistle this morning.

Wireheads Drop Life After Winter Single

Why the fuck aren’t there more bands like Wireheads you ask? Well, likely because no one’s got the chops and creativity to pull it off. Lyrically, the band are always all over the place, fitting airplane crashes, flowers and dinosaurs into a neat little narrative; there’s still some thematic ties always pointing towards what band leader Dom Trimboli describes as “life’s hope and dreams and absurd things that occur.” Musically, it lands somewhere in the fashion of what’s cool with that sort of manufactured post-punk, though this is done with some bluesy roots rock guitar licks that William Miller would most likely called incendiary. Constantly snaking through genres and styles, the band never cease to impress with their creative approach; their new Potentially Venus album will be out later this year via Tenth Court.

Dom and the Wizards Announce New LP

Dom Trimboli perhaps is best known on our site for his work with Wireheads, who we’ve covered a bit, but his other project Dom and the Wizards is offering something refreshing new. A familiar beat opens the first few seconds before twisting into this plodding maraud akin to classic bard deliveries. It’s like a Renaissance Fair jester serenading you through the kaleidoscope of pop music; violin and light strumming accent the storytelling delivery of vocals, more often than not, spoken and not sung. I found this tune leading me down a path where the rest of the stuff in my box just felt really really mundane. You’ll hear this track on The Australian Cyclone Intensity Scale, which drops on April 2nd via Tenth Court.

Turn Up Rex Wonderful and the Silk Sheets

Already a fan of Wireheads, I got turned towards this Rex Wonderful and the Silk Sheets tune via RSTB (which should be daily reading). It starts off a fuzzy plodding jaunt, steady drumming propelling the song. Immediately, vocals are presented with an air of indifference, thrown flippantly through your speakers…maybe even with a bit of disdain. While the groove is the centric force behind the soon, I’m drawn to the way the guitar work jangles in and out of the track, giving a slight bit of discordant noise to the tune. This jam will appear on the new Ego Death tape that drops this week via Tenth Court.

Dig On Another Wireheads Tune

Not too long ago I ran a Wireheads tune that was infectious and gritty, illustrating that the cool knows know bounds in Australia. Now we’re back with a new hit from the band, though this time they take more of a arty post-rock vibe. This tune’s more like a vocal barrage with the musical accompaniment jangling in almost as an afterthought. Blasts of squalling chords jump through in the aftermath of vocal delivery, and you’ve got your ears pinned back waiting for what’s next. What’s next? The band release Lightning Ears on October 20th via Tenth Court.

Rad Rocker from Wireheads

Initially I was digging this new track from Wireheads because of the way the guitars kicked in right off the bat. They had that scuzzy vibe, though rooted in classic rock n’ roll. Still, the Aussie drawl of the vocals really grabbed me, at times indifferent, yet infectious, especially when the female vocal accompaniment joins in to support. The band will be releasing their fourth LP, Lightning Ears, via Tenth Court; it might just be the energetic rocker that breaks through to your listening rotation.
