Really jumping in full-throttle of late into these bands churning out these grimy pieces of indie rock that are saturated in noise and rhythmic propulsion, like the latest single from Philly’s Webb Chapel. They’re latest single creates this brooding discord, with these guitars lines stabbing from behind the curtain, creating this sort of ominous wall of danger. But, at 1:17 there’s this sudden slip up where they evolve into this dream state that sedates you, albeit for a moment before the guitars go howling off this way and that. Their new album World Cup is shaping up to be a beast of a listen; indulge yourself below and grab a copy from Strange Mono Records before the September 6th release date!

Webb Chapel Share Springtime Single

There’s still a thrill when a song pulls you under, tossing and turning you over and over until you crest and the song unrolls before you, like this new single from Webb Chapel. Nearly a minute is spent mixing textures and noise, then angular guitars rip through the speakers, almost operating as a rhythmic pulse that feels harrowing, despite its pop nods. In the group approach, those guitars seem like they’re meant to be the sure-footing for bassist Rachel Gordon’s distant voice; those vocals almost seem afraid of the front of the mix, hiding behind until a startling growl is unleashed. The group will release their new LP, World Cup, on September 6th via Strange Mono Records.

Go Listen to the Official Matinee World Cup EP

If you happen to be one of those folks who comes to this site from time to time, you know one of the labels we’ve long been behind is Matinee Recordings; we even threw up something from the label’s new Azure Blue release this week. Today, however, I can now profess my undying love of the label, as they’ve officially combined my two favorite things and put them all into one delectable ear treat with the Official Matinee World Cup EP. The label has gotten five indiepop artists from participating World Cup to craft brand new gems, relating to this summer’s World Cup (no US indiepop bands on this because Michael Bradley sucks). You’ve got Australia’s The Last Leaves, Sweden’s Red Sleeping Beauty, England’s The Popguns, Spain’s The Royal Landscaping Society…and the first new music in years from Brazil’s Pale Sundays. Seriously, this just makes Friday worth it. Stream the whole thing below, and buy it HERE.

Lucky for you, there’s tons of non-sports places to watch, such as the Mohawk.  I caught up briefly with our friend Patrick who is helping promote the WC at Mohawk, just go get a few quick questions about why a rock n’ roll bar is showing sports.  These few questions will give you some insight as to why you should join us at the ‘Hawk.  Read more

USA! We here at ATH are coming down with a major case of World Cup fever, so it’s great to see the world of music collide with our favorite sport.  These tapes are perfect ways to spend your afternoon, so go get yourself a hold of these perfect collections HERE.
