TemplesCleveland. Many people groan at the idea of going to Cleveland, but I had heard many good things about the city by the big-assed lake. Au contraire, this is a good food town with plenty of venues to check out jams. I went to Lola last night, Michael Symon’s fancy place, and dear jeebus it was good. The night before I went to catch Temples at The Grog Shop. I was treated to locals Nowhere and Philly’s The Districts and dear jeebus, it was good.

Show Preview: Screaming Females @ Red 7 (Tonight)

screamingfemalesIt should be no surprise to anyone that we recommend this show to you, as every band that’s gracing the stage tonight has graced our pages on more than one occasion.  Screaming Females are the headliner on the evening, and Marissa Paternoster is probably one of the strongest women in rock n’ roll.  Her voice, her performance, it all comes from a tiny little body, and it’ll blow yo away.  PUJOL deserves some love too, bringing his garage rock stylings with a ferocity and catchiness all his own.  But, just because two huge traveling acts are bringing some noise, doesn’t mean Austin can’t hold its own.  The openers Crooked Bangs and the Midgetmen are two long-standing ATH faves, so please show up early to support our friends.  Tickets will cost you $14 at the door, which opens at 9 PM.

Mix It Up With Kinkajous

kinkaIf you would have told me that I would be even remotely interested in a band that abides by the crossing of the genres of electronic and jazz, I would have to tell you you’re fucking nuts man. However, when I heard “Limb” from Kinkajous, a London based band that does just that, I was forced to change my preconceived notions a little bit. Take a listen–while it may be a little different than your normal taste, somehow, it’s reminding me a little bit of Explosions In the Sky in the way that it evokes a wistful kind of feeling even though it lacks lyrics and just relies on instrumentation. COTA Fan Fest Schedule

boom2Transmission took over COTA Fan Fest. The lineup went from electric violin and cheesy country to now having Joan Jett, Devotchka, De La Soul, Those Darlins’, Fishbone, Broncho, Black Joe Lewis and more. Not bad. The schedule has been posted and the best part is that it is FREE.

Put that on your schedules for Halloween fun on Formula One weekend. Don’t be skeered, it doesn’t get too crowded and most people I have met while out at the track for the race have been great, all of them in love with Austin. Also, if you want a free F1 primer, head to Alamo South Lamar tonight and next Wednesday for FREE screenings of Senna (a great documentary) and Rush (Ron Howard movie about the Lauda/Hunt rivalry), respectively.

Dirt Dress Offer Up New Single

doubledI caught this jam creeping up the other day, and it’s probably one of my favorite tracks off the Dirt Dress Revelations EP, which comes out in about a month.  It opens up with this guitar line that sort of knifes its way through the opening minutes, though there’s a nice distortion to it that gives it a quirky touch.  Drums roll through, often offering a nice beat, or other times pushing the track forward with pace (thus the rhythm section!). And you’ll always see me enjoying a good horn blast, especially if it’s done appropriately; no one likes gratuitous horn blasts.  Check out their EP on November 18th from the Future Gods. I also just dig the band’s aesthetic.

New Opus from Vaadat Charigim

vcLast year, we wrote about Tel Aviv’s Vaadat Charigim quite a bit; they were just releasing their debut album for Burger Records.  They’re back now with a 7″ they’ll be releasing with local Austin label Reverberation Appreciation Society, as they prep for a new LP in 2015.  This first track is this trembling swell of psychedelia, moving in and out of your stream of consciousness.  It opens quietly, building momentum for the band’s entrance just around the minute mark.  You’ll find that the song definitely has peaks and valleys, rising and falling here over the song’s 9 minute sprawl.  I appreciate that; I like a good non-run of the mill psych track.

Show Pics: Erasure @ ACL Live (10/18)

ErasureIf you don’t like Erasure, I don’t care. I do. The lady friends of my younger days liked Erasure, so I liked Erasure. …at least that was my excuse to the metal-head, skater bros friends I had. One of the best shows I saw last year was Erasure at the very same venue, so I had high expectations. And to help meet those expectations, instead of a DJ, the lads form London brought along LA’s Superhumanoids as the opener.

I’m Enjoying a Daydream Waltz

ddwaltsYou come to expect a certain sound from your favorite labels, so I was taken aback when I grabbed this new single from A Daydream Waltz.  It’s one of the latest singles to be released by Art is Hard Records, so you knew I’d be on board, but for an entirely different reason.  I like the melancholic tone of the guitar; it has a bit of a billowing sound as well, which goes even further as the tune progresses.  It’s this perfect bit of pensive pop music, and it’s my jam today.  You can also go and grab the band’s According to Whom EP for the NYP over at their Bandcamp.

Ok, of Montreal‘s a pretty impressive band that puts on notoriously killer live shows. Oh, you’ve somehow never seen the weirdness that is Kevin Barnes & company in the live setting? Well, there’s a link just above where you can change that problem for under twenty bucks. If you’re like me and you’re always down for something a little funky, or if October’s got you feeling spooky, head over to the Mohawk and check out the psychedelic and flamboyantly twisted rock from this legendary band. Openers are Pillar Point, who sound like they’ll be a display of electronic delight to loosen up those dancing shoes.
