I just couldn’t resist this Superdrag set, especially considering they play their self proclaimed only hit from 1996 “Sucked Out”. Oh it brings back memories of middle school doesn’t it? Portugal. The Man are about to embark on a tour of the US, and to celebrate they are releasing a free digital tour EP. 101x is putting on another Homegrown live at Scoot Inn on Wednesday and features What Made Milwaukee Famous front-man Michael Kingcaid performing with The Motts. Fellow locals TV Torso and Western Ghost House will be joining in for support. Sorry for the lack of info on door times and price, but I tried my best. I LOVE it when no one seems to know shit about an event put on by a big local radio station. Seriously. Anyone have more details?

Another one of those Canada bands eh? Yep this one is called Parlour Steps and they have some new music for you to check it. The track is called “Little Pieces” and will appear on the band’s upcoming album Hidden Names which hits stores October 13th on Nine Mile Records.

Since you’ve already been introduced to the Dodos in the ACL Spotlight, I won’t waste any time with the bands history. Time to Die is the bands second full length (both released on Frenchkiss Records), and initially it shared a lot of similarities with it’s predecessor, 2008’s Vister, but on repeated listens the familiarity wanes into something completely different.
On their debut the Dodos existed as a two piece and, per my experience, two piece bands tend to have a certain something that sets them apart from larger groups. Some would say it’s sloppiness, and I would I agree that there is a looser sound when it is coming from such a small outfit, but I would also argue that, in a two man band, there exists an earnestness that sometimes eludes bands with 3+ members. When listening to Visiter you are listening to band trying to fill the space with their modest instruments and voices. It was spectacular and exciting.
With Time to Die the Dodos have expanded to a three piece, filling out their sound with an extra percussionist. This extra member doesn’t detract from my enjoyment of the band, but I would be lying if I said it didn’t change the bands sound. Gone is the frenetic pace, guitarist/vocalist, Meric Long and drummer Logan Kroeber are no longer scrambling to fill out the space. They have let themselves relax and in that relaxation came a fuller, more realized sound. On tracks like ‘Small Deaths’, ‘Fables’, and ‘Acorn Factory’ we find a more mature Dodos, content on letting their songs unfold naturally rather than rushing them. ‘Troll Nacht’ showcases the newest member, Keaton Snyder on the xylophone, and is probably one of the most well rounded tracks on Time to Die.
I am excited about what the Dodos will do in the future, and if Time to Die is any indication this is a band we should all be excited about. Check them out at the LiveStrong Stage at ACL on Sunday, October 4th at 12:30 p.m.

Or, The Whale are less than two weeks away from releasing their self-titled album, and I’ve been playing it sort of non-stop around my house. While you wait at home for your copy, I’ve got another new tune off the album to share in hopes of encouraging you to dig this little San Fran band. If you do, the new album hits stores on September 22nd. Here’s “Rusty Gold.”

Amazon continues their battle against the giants of itunes with more and more free MP3 samplers from small indie labels. This one comes from Paper Bag Records and features the likes of Woodhands, Sally Shapiro and multiple other quality bands on the label. Another one of those Brooklyn bands, The Antlers, appeared on the newly revamped Spinner Interface site on Friday. The guys perform several songs mostly from their 2009 release Hospice all of which sound superb in the studio. Here’s their last single “Two” for your enjoyment on this bleak Monday.
