Friday Top 5: 2010 Album Covers

It’s time again to turn the music down and put on your art-critic monocles and top hats. Yes, today is the day we judge 2010 releases strictly on their visual packaging aesthetics as opposed to their auditory aptitude. It’s also a way to highlight the ‘other’ artists who have created the artwork and often don’t get the credit besides a sub-par blurb in the liner notes. 2010 was filed with beautiful artwork and it has been a struggle to dwindle them down to 5, but alas, my favorites are to be found below. Just like last year, I’m looking at the entire package; composition, balance, tone, meaning and originality. Use of text is not necessary as we saw last year, but when it is used, it must compliment the piece as a whole. I don’t claim to be an expert, but when looking back through this year’s album artwork, here are the ones that caught my eye.

New Music From Scattered Trees

I just got sent this delightful little number called “Love and Leave” from Chicago based band Scattered Trees and couldn’t resist sharing it with you.  Sonically it’s not usually what I go for, but something about it just told me it was a great way to send us off to the weekend.  Sometimes the simplest take on things can lend to the best results.  Or so they say… Scattered Trees are currently working on a new release with a tentative date for arrival set in the Spring of ’11.  You can of course read a bit more about this new band and hear more of songs on their website.

New Tunes from Daniel Martin Moore

After releasing the excellent, and oft overlooked, Dear Companion with friend Ben Solee, Daniel Martin Moore is set to release his own new effort, In the Cool of the Day, on January 18th.  The album will once again be released by our good friends over at Sub Pop, and we know that it’s going to be something special.  Daniel definitely has that traditional folk feel, using various string instruments to add textures on the album’s single “Dark Road.”  Moore sounds wise beyond his years here, and we look forward to see his hard work finally come into the light for the masses.

Those Ohio kids most of us seem to have fallen in love with Pomegranates are making a stop in Austin at the Mohawk on Saturday.  Joining the guys on stage you’ll get two great Austin bands with Oh No Oh My and A Tiger Named Lovesick.  Not sure exactly how much the show will cost, but tickets will be sold at the door and we’d assume they’re under $10.  This is a great chance to see an up and coming band in an intimate setting for super cheap.

New Tunes from Tyvek

After releasing their latest release, Nothing Fits, last week, these Detroit bros are out to set the record straight, and get you pumped about the whole affair.  Tyvek have just released a new MP3 today, and it’s just another reason that those in the know are getting stoked on the band.  Put the bunny hats aside, and you’ve got a power-fueled record that will definitely get your heart pumping and your feet stomping.  If you haven’t gotten to know this band yet, now is your chance, so don’t miss out on the latest beast from Detroit.
