Last week our friends over at Bad Panda Records sent us this new track from Berlin via Canada based band Southern Shores. It reminds me a bit of The Go Team if they were to dope up on some downers and take the energy level down a notch. The song also has a accompanying video that I’ve been enjoying over on Vimeo. Oh it’s the most wonderful time of the year isn’t it? I’m sure some of you people are just about sick of all this year end list mumbo jumbo (as we sort of are too). We do however realize that some of you may have secretly been waiting for us to drop more lists your way. Well here you go friends, I give you the Austin Town Hall Top 50 songs of 2010. This list typically proves to be the hardest one to narrow down since we usually start with over 200 songs and somehow get it whittled down to a managable number. I guarantee some of you will love it and some of you poop faces will be disgusted by it. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below. Follow the jump for list.
It seems that as the holidays approach, everyone is getting in on the action. Not to be outdone, Banjo or Freakout is offering up not just any Xmas track, but an entire album of Xmas songs. Now, be forewarned, this doesn’t sound anything like traditional Christmas fair, which is precisely why you should check this out, not to mention the fact that its FREE. And, if you haven’t gotten to know Alessio and his band by now, do so, as the work he showcases in his Xmas album is indicative of the great stuff he’s already putting together. Local Austin rock band The Zoltars are having themselves a 7″ release show at Beerland on Saturday night. Joining the guys on stage are fellow up and comers How I Quit Crack, Air Traffic Controllers, Roo, and These Are Words. That’s a pretty hefty lineup for a very small door charge. What else are you gonna be doing on Saturday night? Nothing!

California native Shon Sullivan definitely wears his influences on his sleeve, or should we just say wears his home state on his sleeve. His band, which is mainly his work, Goldenboy are releasing their new record, Sleepwalker, on Eenie Meenie Records February 8th. There’s a bit of a harboring spirit, but what follows through the entire album is sort of a ray of light, which is where once can tie in the mention of California, not to mention Shon’s adoration for the late (great) Elliott Smith. One listen to this single and perhaps you’ll fall head over heels for Goldenboy, leading you towards Sleepwalker early next year.

It’s been some time since we’ve broken out a band for our From the Closet feature, so I figured it was high time to do a little bit of revisiting. It seems like the last few runs were all about emo, so I thought I bring back a thing or two that illustrated the higher brow interests of my musical tastes. Here you go gang: Tall Dwarfs.

One of our best local and instrumental acts This Will Destroy You have a show planned for Friday night at Mohawk in Austin. Joining the ATH fave on stage you’ll get a stacked bill of locals with The Eastern Sea, Pompeii, Tactics, For Hours and Ours, and Searcher all in on the fun. Bellow you can find recent single “Communal Blood” from upcoming album Tunnel Blanket which still has no set release date. Anyone know the story on the huge delay of the new release?

This summer we posted a new beach rock song from UK band Two Wounded Birds called “My Lonesome”. Well now we’ve got new track “Night Patrol” that appears on the recently released EP Keep On Dreaming Baby. The first track we posted reminded us of Twin Peaks, so we’ll stick with the theme music idea and compare this jam to one you might find on a James Bond soundtrack. As promised earlier this week, we wanted to remind you about the sweet show at Red 7 on Friday night with buzz bands Turbo Fruits and Pujol. Also on the stage are Rayon Beach and Dikes of Holland. It’s a cheap ticket price so I’d recommend checking these guys out before they start booking at bigger venues. Below you can also find the new song from Turbo Fruits we posted earlier this week.

After breaking out a pretty solid debut, Beach Fossils are at it again, ready to release a new EP on Captured Tracks, which is quickly making waves in my book. The collection is titled What a Pleasure, and it adds just another thing to look forward to on February 22nd. You’ll find that the vocals are really up front in the mix, while the guitar just sort of meanders back and forth throughout the song. It’s got a feeling of labelmates (and founder) Blank Dogs, if you removed the fuzziness and distortion. Neither of those things are bad in my book, but that’s just one man’s opinion. I’ll let you make the final call.
