Show Preview: Wild Nothing, Abe Vigoda @ Red 7 (2/4)

Date Friday, Feb 4th
Location Emos
Doors 900p
Tickets $8 from Frontgate

February has already kicked off with some great shows, but I reckon to bet that there won’t be a better ticket in town than this, whether it’s snowing or not!  First, Wild Nothing won over fans last year with Gemini, and continued kicking ass with the Golden Haze EP.  Their combination of bedroom pop and electronica just fits perfectly into our lives.  Then, you have the incredible Abe Vigoda, and since this is their first tour since the release of Crush, you know they’re going to bring their A game.  On that alone, two amazing bands for $8, you should go.  But, because life sometimes can get better, you have two of the hottest bands in town opening with Bali Yaaah and Superlitebike.  Haven’t gotten to see Bali Yaaah just yet, but Superlitebike is ridiculous live.  Do it folks, lets keep each other warm.

New Music From Low

Indie veteran band Low are ready to release their first new album of new material since their underrated effort from 2007 Drums and Guns.  The band’s new album is entitled C’Mon and features this new single “Try to Sleep”.  It’s of course a slow burner from the group that helped invent the term “slow burner”.  You can pick up a copy of the new record on April 12th via the always bad ass Sub Pop Records.

New Music From Wrong Words

I was sent this new song “Summer’s Gone” from San Francisco based outfit The Wrong Words yesterday and have been playing it on repeat ever since.  It’s a pretty simple song, but oh so catchy in all it’s pop goodness.  The tune is set to appear on the band’s self-titled debut LP out March 22nd on Trouble in Mind Records.

New Track from BNLX

BNLX is a band out of Minneapolis who have been making some pretty solid waves.  The duo is made up of  a husband and wife set, all who’ve been playing music for some time in their respective scenes.  I’ve been digging the driving guitar sound, and the way you can almost feel a hook creeping out from behind, but it never succeeds, hiding behind bits of feedback.  It’s pretty straightforward, and in that fashion, it just hits you in the face from the get go, providing a solid rhythm and yet another spin on the traditional guy/girl duo.  Give this track a nice try.

The Go! Team – Rolling Blackouts

Rating: ★★★☆☆

So what genre exactly is The Go! Team? Pop, hip-hop, garage rock, alternative dance, or a list of various others? The answer to these questions is all of the above, as The Go! Team dabbles between many different genres, if not plain and simply their own unique combination of sounds. To me, this distinct variety that makes up this group is refreshing while swimming through a sea of simple pop albums. However, at times the group can sound a tad bit too hyper, and the variety can become a little lost on the ears of previous listeners.

This facilitating sound is apparent from the first song to the fourth. On the first track, “T.O.R.N.A.D.O,” those letters are spelled out from the very beginning, with what sounds like a full band of horns, akin to something you would hear perhaps as a pep rally. As you suppress the urge to yell “go tornadoes!” the song ends and transitions to “Secretary Song,” which begins with some chanting like that of the first, but then moves to more of a pop sound, with subtle string work and tinkling sounds of percussion.  At this point, it seems like The Go! Team might only have two tricks up their sleeve, but then they keep adding more to their repertoire.

On “Apollo Throwdown,” a flat out dance groove is thrown down. Gone are the pep-rally and pop sounds, and here are electronic beeps and almost rap (well rap to a white girl like me). If you can make it through this one without tapping your feet, then congrats, you’re a hard ass! This song is a free-flowing all out party-ready groove, encompassing the crazy energy this group has. Following this outburst of energy and dance tunes comes a complete turn in the form of “Ready to Go Steady,” which takes a sort of 70’s sound based off the slightly echoed drums. It’s hard to believe that these two songs back to back are even the same group, as they sound drastically different

If you are a long time fan of this band, then you know that this in not music for just any old day, but music for days that need a boost of explosive energy that The Go! Team offers. A certain mood is required for this group, and Rolling Blackouts is a sure testament to this. At the same time, if you have been a long time fan of this band, then nothing is that new for you in respect to their sound; it’s the same energy, and not a lot of new aspects that keep old timers’ attentions. As hard as this may be to believe, The Go! Team has lost the freshness that they once had. Granted, Rolling Blackouts is nothing to turn your nose up at, but it’s not something to stop everything for.

New Song from Sugar & Gold

I know, I know, I’ve been claiming this year for guitar-oriented rock, as opposed to dance-influenced stuff, but I just can’t get this song out of my head at the moment, so I thought I’d send it your way.  Sugar & Gold are from San Francisco, and they’ll be offering up their Bodyaches EP on March 8th.  Listening to this track, it’s part Twin Shadow and part Chromeo.  I know, that seems like an odd mixture, and one that might not necessarily work, but there’s just this infectious little groove kicking around that makes me tap my toe.  I’ll admit, sometimes you just want to tap your toes.
