New Track from Crinkles

Luckily I came across the info on Crinkles in my inbox today, promising warm guitars and mention of nu-Americana. Not sure that I know much about nu-Americana, but I definitely love warm guitar sounds, especially as I’ve been feeling kind of worn out lately, so it allows me to unwind in my own mind for a spell.  Crinkles are on their way to releasing their Know Nothing EP, which will hopefully get the band a bit more recognition, as this track deserves your attention, especially if you wait until the end for singer Dan’s voice to drift off harmoniously.  The band have a few EPs to their name already, so take some time out today to visit their various pages, and take it all in; you’ll be glad you did.

New Song from Black Lips

I feel like its really been awhile since I’ve really jammed out to Black Lips, but as the day draws closer to the release of their new record, I find myself revisiting their solid catalog.  The band’s new album, Arabia Mountain, comes out on Vice on June 7th, and so far it sounds pretty promising.  Today they released a new track, aptly titled “New Direction,” and the song is definitely a step towards something different.  For me, the first thing I notice is that the production is much cleaner, and the band seem less like a bunch of punk rabble-rousers. A little bit of focus and things guys could be killer. Personally, I’m finally seeing that Georgia punk sound in their music, and I dig it.

New Music From FIDLAR

So did I mention that I am slightly into the garage/psych rock sound right now?  No der.  Well here’s another new song by L.A. based FIDLAR that’s also melding well with my current musical tastes.  This new tune “Max Can’t Surf” appears on a new 7″ from the band that was recently released on White Iris.  If I haven’t said it enough, I’m looking for some songs to get me ready for the upcoming summertime people.

New Music From Minden

Here’s a new slow rockin’ style jam from Kansas City band Minden called that’s been a soundtrack to my mellow Monday.  The song is called “Swift Way On” and is the title track of a new 7″ from the band due out June 21st.  Right now this is the only song available from the band, but stay tuned here and to there bandcamp page if you dig their sound.

New Song from Grooms

One of the great things about SXSW is that it introduces you to bands you’ve never heard of, and often don’t remember days afterward, but then when you come across a new tune you get really excited, remembering all the promise the band showed in their brief set.  Such is the case of Grooms, having come across them last year at SXSW.  Having been quiet since the release of their last album, Rejoicer, the group has now lined up the release of Prom, set to come out July 12th via Kanine Records.  This first track comes off with this real muddy feel to it, filled with noise throughout, seemingly about to crash down up the listener.  All the while the vocals have this thoughtful quality, as if the lyrics are an observation of the music.  It all makes for a listen that will have you pushing repeat until the button breaks.

Gold-Bears – Are You Falling in Love

Rating: ★★★½☆

With summer break looming over us all, it’s the perfect time for a twee-punk band like Gold-Bears to make their debut. As this is their first ever album released, this band is brand new to the music scene and looking to win a spot in your heart as well as your stereo. Surely you have room left for some jangly guitar and hazy percussion in there?

From the very first song, you can hear the clear alternative punk soundings of Gold-Bears. “Record Store” begins with flat sounding drums along with gentle acoustic guitar, and then some raging, yet even-toned, electric guitar streams in. Then the song picks up, and you have the carefully placed cymbal crashes along with breaks in the raging melody to that of the delightfully soft beginning. Meanwhile, the suiting vocals blend together with the instrumental aspects of the jam. After this lovely opening tune is finished, the band moves to “All Those Years.” On this one, some gang vocals continue the energy and are instantly reminiscent to bands like Ted Leo and Pharmacists. They’ve got that crash pop beat mixed together with the percussion of a more punk style band, which is noticeable on the third song.

After a pretty positive and upbeat start for Gold-Bears, they slow things down as they approach the middle of the album. The title track certainly stands apart from the rest of the songs in this body of music, as it is filled with foggy feedback and jingling tambourine that is sure to serve as an appropriate break from the quickness of the fast paced start. It’s the perfect placement of such a song that slows the listener back down for a breather, if only so they can jump back in at double time on the next number, “East Station Attendant.” This one is the direct opposite of its predecessor, fast, short and rocking.

Gold-Bears continue this impressive debut with more standouts like single “Tally,” that relies on gang vocals once more to carry the streaming beat. They close strong, yet delicate, and leave their listeners happy to have taken a chance on this band. For a first album, it is nothing short of appealing. So when you reach the end with them, and reflect on Are You Falling In Love?, you can answer with a yea, I’m pretty sure I am.

ACL Festival Lineup Is Here

Well as most of you who stayed up late last night already know, the entire Austin City Limits Festival lineup leaked last night around midnight.  I’m sure some of you will love it and some of you will hate it, but I have no doubt that we’ll still be seeing many of you there regardless.  As always, the middle part of the lineup with acts like The Vaccines, The Walkmen, Secret Cities, Broken Social Scene, etc. are what make this festival continuously great.  For you out of towners, you’ll also get some big names that stopped into Austin recently and made a lasting impression like Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, Twin Shadow, Cut Copy, etc. Have I really been going to this thing for 10 years!?  Full lineup can be seen over on the ACL website.  Let the whining and cheering begin.
