Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets SOLD OUT!

I hope most of you were paying attention to sites that think more in the future and saw the recent announcement about the Modest Mouse shows at Stubbs in Austin.  I say this because both the initial show and secondary show are sold out so you’ll have to try craigslist or scalpers for this one.  Both nights will have stellar opening support provided by Portland based group Talkdemonic.  Don’t forget that Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. will also be doing aftershows on the inside stage for both nights.  Get your hands on some tickets kids.

Song of the Year Battle

First, we’d really like to apologize for the site being down for a few days.  Clearly we had some issues, but we were enjoying Fun x 3 Fest, so we got to it as soon as we could.

Second, I feel like the guy in this picture today, so I wanted to toss something your way.  Aside from our post-grunge a-capella group during Danzig, we spent a lot of time talking about albums of the year, song of the year, and of course, the festival.  But, we can’t seem to agree on our favorite song of the year, so here’s where you can help. We’re putting up both the songs we feel are in contention, and we need you to give us your vote. Leave a comment and tell us which you like more. Or, if you hate us and completely disagree, tell us in the comments what your favorite is. Here we go:

Friday Top 5: Fx3 Bands To See

Fun Fun Fun Fest starts today, and not like tonight, it kicked off around noon. You’re already late! Some of us are disappointed that the festival was forced to move away from its stomping grounds at Waterloo Park, and now set up at the large landscape of Auditorium Shores. No matter how dusty or crowded it gets, there are so many great bands performing that will keep you bobbin’ your happy little head. Here are the top 5 acts that I am most stoked about seeing.

Beautiful New Track from FAMY

We’ll be heading off to Fun Fun Fun Fest today, but I wanted to leave you with this superb new track that I stumbled upon this morning.  There’s not too much info out on FAMY, but this track seems like the perfect way to spend the remaining hours of Friday.  There’s a drifting quality of this track, giving you the emotional feeling of moving outside of yourself, only to return with a sense of overwhelming calm.  I figured for those of you not fortunate enough to attend F X 3 Fest, this is a great way to wrap up your afternoon.  Enjoy folks, and be safe out there.

New (ish) Track from Cate Le Bon

I know this track’s been floating around for a little bit now, but I wanted to give it some love, as I really felt like Cate Le Bon won me, as well as many others, over during her recent performance opening for St. Vincent.  She’s solidified details for her upcoming record, CYRK, which will hit stores on January 17th. It’s great hearing her voice in this setting, as live, she seems so endearingly fragile, but you can clearly see her talent soar on this track.  Her voice sounds remarkable, and the arrangements that accompany the track really bring her songwriting to the forefront.  Give the gal a chance; it’ll be worth your time.

More New Music from Psychic Twin

Long have we adored Headlights over here at ATH, so when word leaked that singer Erin Fein was going out on her own as Psychic Twin, we got really excited.  We posted a track not long ago, and now we’ve got another one to offer you.  This one has a similarly darker quality to Fein’s music, though her voice still maintains that coy playfulness that drew us in so long ago.  It seems to me like she’s got a knack for this sort of thing, so we look forward to see what else she’s got up her sleeve in 2012.

New Music From Analog Rebellion

It seems that I am a little bit late to the picnic on Dallas based Analog Rebellion so I’ll go ahead and apologize now.  With that out of the way, I’d like to share with you readers a new song from the 2 piece outfit called “Father Abraham”.  For lack of a better descriptor, I’m going to call this “epic style guitar driven lo-fi”.  Yeah that’s what I said fool.  A new album from the duo is currently in the works with more information coming soon.

ATH Show Picks: Funx3 Fest Nites

The Fun Fun Fun Fest powers that be announced recently that all after shows this year would be completely free for anyone holding a festival wristband.  You can agree or disagree with me if you like, but that’s just about one of the most bad ass ideas I’ve ever heard.  Leave it to the Transmission guys to continually outdo themselves year after year… So now that the festival is officially here, let us take a closer look at these Fun Fest Nites and give you a nightly recommendation on where we think you should be.  Obviously these are just our picks and not intended as a fully detailed guide.  For a complete listing of the Nites lineup, head to the official site.  Follow the jump for our recs.

New Power Pop from The Spills

There’s not a lot that I know about The Spills at this moment, but I do know a good track when I hear one.  The British group has just released their album Occam’s Razor, and I’ve been giving it a good going over this evening.  There’s bits and pieces of power-pop, but you can tell there’s more intricate guitar play going on beneath, sort of like my heralded heroes in the Wedding Present.  Okay, so it’s not quite on that level, at least not yet, but the bass sounds similar and there’s definitely a personal touch to the lyrics. Give it a go. It won’t hurt.
