Show Preview: Thurston Moore @ St. Davids Episcopal Church (2/11)

Date Saturday, Feb 11th
Location St. David’s Episcopal Church
Doors 730 pm
Tickets $17 from Transmission

Make no mistake about it, Saturday has a lot of great shows, but one of the places to be has to be St. David’s Episcopal Church where you can catch one of the legends of indie rock.  Things seem to be on the down low for Sonic Youth, but Thurston has a great catalog all his own, so don’t show just hoping to catch up on the oldies. The last time I caught him doing his solo act, I couldn’t take my eyes off his guitar skills; be sure to get there early, as you’ll want to get as close as you can to this demigod.

New Folk from Kendl Winter

You’ve got to love an indie rock stable with eclectic tastes, and such is the genius of K Records.  They’re set to release the new album from Kendl Winter titled The Mechanics of Hovering Flight, and I’m really enjoying getting lost in this album today. Listeners should appreciate her penchant for storytelling, especially on this single.  One listen to this track and I’m hoping you’ll see the gifts in her singing and songwriting.  Oh, and I acknowledge this is a melancholy number, but there’s definitely some more peppy numbers about on the album. In this day and age, folk music is coming at us from all angles, but only so often is it done as well as it is here.

Sharon Van Etten – Tramp

Rating: ★★★★☆

“We’re alright, we’re alright” sweeping over a slow moving beat and creeping along with wailing guitars screams as the farthest thing from being actually alright. Accompanied by Zach Condon of Beirut, “We Are Fine,” the eighth track on Tramp comes across as a bold statement of purpose for this album and Sharon Van Etten’s style itself—pushing through while exploring the emotional turmoil that perhaps plagues this songstress and perhaps plagues us all at some point or another. Tramp is yet another staple of this exploration for Van Etten, whose raspy voice is power, often made grim by the words that are carried by it, and haunting in itself.

The album begins at “Warsaw,” which is by far the most jangly/garage rock number on this release. Squalling guitar brings you in at its crawling pace, and then Van Etten’s voice makes its first appearance. Juxtaposed against the raw instruments, the vocals appear at their sweetest here and it isn’t until the next song that you can really grasp the true force behind them. Second up is “Give Out,” on which the focus is transferred to the voice that sails above the guitar and minimalist percussion, and is yet tethered to the music by its deep resonant force. When Van Etten belts “you’re the reason why I’ll move to the city,” she reaches a sinisterly arching, skin crawling tone that oozes strength amidst destruction.

After this powerful track, “Serpents,” the lead single from Tramp gets its bitter say in its own chilling notes. More prominent percussion and borderline angry vocals command this song, driving it into corners and then letting it all go. Here is where essentially my only qualm with this record can be found: song placement. The first three songs are all brilliant and supremely gripping in their strength and boldness, and then the fourth song immediately drops from outward reflection to inward contemplation. All of the caustic and edginess is lost and Van Etten turns to a softer, more acoustic sound, which carries through the middle portion of the album and may have some differing reactions by listeners. Some may find this breakdown alluring in its real nature, and others may find it weak.

She does not end on a meek note, however, and brings back the power on songs aforementioned like “We Are Fine,” that stretch the vocals to boil and “Magic Chords,” which strikes the same fancy as the first few tracks on Tramp. It is a devastatingly beautiful number, and the same can be said for the whole album. You are transfigured by the sorrow found in Van Etten’s voice, and held down by its overwhelming strength.

New Music From Ravens & Chimes

This new song “Night” from New York based indie outfit Ravens & Chimes is the perfect setting for me as I write this post late in the evening.  It’s subtle approach to songwriting writing seems like what everyone needs when unwinding from a long day at the office.  Somehow the band manages to create these soundscapes that pack a major punch with me despite the faintness that seems to pour out of every note.  A new album from the band Holiday Life will arrive on April 3rd via Better Looking Records and we can only hope that it brings similar music.

Smashing Hit from Estrogen Highs

Man, this is what a great song sounds like? Yeah, absolutely. I hadn’t heard of Estrogen Highs until I caught this sweet jam in the inbox, and I’m so glad I’ve been able to spend my entire day rocking out to this one.  The Connecticut group are releasing their Irrelevant Future album via Trouble in Mind Records on April 10th, and you can bet on it being brilliant.  This track begins with a light musical line and vocal accompaniment, which goes on for a bit.  Hold on tight though, as the band blasts off into this brilliant realm of post-punk hooks.  Songs such as this can only make the world a better place.

Nice New Track from Little Hurricane

Sometimes you get some information on a band, and you’re tempted to look the other way, panning them as just another run of the mill bluesy duo. But, along the way to my dismissal, I just couldn’t escape this track getting stuck in my head. Little Hurricane might have a hell of a lot of swagger in the live setting, but I’m really enjoying the sound on the first single from their album Homewrecker; the album hits on May 1st via Unknown Behavior. There’s something about Tone’s (singer/guitarist) vocals that definitely raise the bar on blues-rock; it’s not that typical country whine.  With Jack White rocking solo, a song like this propels Little Hurricane to the top of the pack.

New Music From Here We Go Magic

Does Luke Temple ever sleep?  It really doesn’t seem that way.  The guy is constantly recording, touring, and putting out new music as a solo musician and with his steady outfit Here We Go Magic.  This new tune “Make Up Your Mind” features a pretty funky beat on top of the typical Temple/HWGM chanting verses.  A new album from the band, A Different Ship, is due out May 8th on Secretly Canadian.

Party Pics: Council Meeting @ ND (2/3)

There was another Council Meeting at The North Door and it just so happened that friends of ATH, The Great Nostalgic and Tiger Waves, were playing through the curtains. What a lovely way to spend an evening; playing jams and shooting jams being jammed. Lots of jamming, in fact. Jam has become our favorite thing.

Tasty drinks, booty drops, plenty of extras joining in because of multiple birthdays. You may have missed it, but it was documented for posterity. Click through…

Literature Pre-Order Now Up

Okay, admittedly we’re going to give a little plug here for ourselves, but I’m totally okay with that.  As we’ve mentioned here before, we’re going to be helping put out the new album, Arab Spring, from Austin’s own Literature.  It’s a project we’re stoked to be part of, and one that we hope will help us launch our non-profit label (aren’t they all?) to help Austin/Texas bands.  Anyways, for those interested in getting your hands on it, you can preorder the album today from our partners (the other benig Cop’s Kids Records)  in this venture, Square of Opposition.  Go HERE to get yours now, and sample one of the sweet tracks from the record below!
