SXSW Interviews: Prince Rama

As we continue our SXSW coverage, we’re bringing to you a group that sadly gets lumped in with psychedelic rock, not that we don’t like that style, but Prince Rama is so much more than that.  They’re a whole lot more experimental, combinging elements of Eastern world music, creating an atypical sound from the get-go.  They played a great show in Austin earlier this year with Gang Gang Dance, so we expect another great performance. Oh, and apparently cats are the loneliest thing if their owned by touring bands.

ATH:  What is the most challenging thing about being a band during SXSW or another similar festival?

Prince Rama: SLEEPING.

ATH:  What are some tips you would offer newbie bands to survive during SXSW or just in general on tour?

Prince Rama: Ok first things first. If you’ve already booked yourself more than 5 shows a day at sxsw, you’re already on the fast track to breaking up your band. Also in general, remember that on tour if it’s horizontal, you can sleep on it.

ATH:  What music are you guys currently jamming in your tour bus?

Prince Rama: BLACK SABBATH

ATH:  Who wins the Euro Cup this summer? It’s okay to tell us you hate soccer.

Prince Rama: We’re rooting for Europe!

ATH:  It’s fairly early in the musical year. What’s in store for your band before the world ends in December?

Prince Rama: We’re recording a new album as soon as we get back from sxsw, TOP 10 HITS FOR THE END OF THE WORLD. And building a fallout shelter.

ATH:  What’s the best pre-show beverage for the band? Let’s get brand specific! And, what’s the worst free shot we can buy you at SXSW?

Prince Rama: I’m a big fan of H2O, brought to you by HYDROGEN and OXYGEN. We don’t do shots.

ATH:  Being out on tour, what’s the one thing you miss about being back at home

Prince Rama: Our cat!!

ATH:  Best band of all time is….?

Prince Rama: Thai Elephant Orchestra
