Woods – Bend Beyond

Rating: ★★★★☆

Honestly, I’ve never been one-hundred percent behind Woods.  Some of their tunes have been really good, and others I could have done without, but when you’re working as hard as this band, sometimes you get lost in the fold.  But, Bend Beyond is a pretty exceptional record, and it’s definitely gotten a hold of me.

You couldn’t have asked for a better opening track than “Bend Beyond,” which clearly owes a bit to California pop of yesteryear.  The song opens slowly, but when the chorus begins to take off in this perfect melody, it won me over completely.  Sure, there’s a bit much of the guitar noodling for my typical liking, but with the striking harmony as the central player, I can forgive that. And they followed it up with “Cali in a Cup,” a song that immediately had me awkwardly stomping about my stereo room with a huge grin upon my face.  One listen here and you’ll remember why those of us who are pop lovers really love music.  At this point, Bend Beyond is two for two.

I promise you, Woods aren’t letting up, but they do offer more than just this folk-laden sunny pop.  You don’t have to go too far to find “It Ain’t Easy;” it’s a number that mostly revolves around gentle guitar strumming and vocals.  You’ll hear some faint slide guitar shimmering in the background, providing the song with more depth, but it’s not like that’s needed, as the track’s pretty special standing on its own.  Or they can go in a completely different direction, just as they do on “Find Them Empty.” It opens with this shattering psychedelic guitar noise, which never fully fades away, circling in and out about the central idea of the track.  Definitely a pop tune, similar to the earlier tracks mentioned, but with a bit of ballsy guitar work making it something else entirely.

I’m not really sure what is about this release that has made me completely warm to the band, but right now I’m leaning towards the undeniable consistency on Bend Beyond.  You can skip all the way from the first track to “Impossible Skys,” which is the second to last track here, still seeing some lineage in the sense that they’re still grooming blissful pop tunes.  In fact, the majority of the songs in this collection share the same sentiment, though there are some differing variables that I’ve previously mentioned; those differences provide just another variation to leave you with a record that never sounds the same, but always sounds cohesive.

Ultimately, that’s where Woods leave off on this record, giving you a record that’s tied nicely together by the band’s focus.  You’re not going to get bored listening to this album, but you’re surely going to leave your listening experience with happier ears.  Some bands make pop music, others add elements of pop to their folk music, and when it’s done as well as it on Bend Beyond, you’re not going to see too many people complain.

Even More New Music From Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders

If I haven’t made it clear yet, I’m all about up and coming artist Jack Ladder & The Dreamlanders.  I’ve already posted on his songs several times over the last couple of months and I just can’t seem to get enough of the guy and his band.  This new track “Dumb Love” is probably the best pop tune we’ve heard from the band so far, which provides a nice contrast to the slow burners that I’ve posted in the past.  If you’re into the guy as much as me, his new album Hurtsville is out now on Hollow Eyed Records.

New Single from Gap Dream

I’ve been really pleased with the output from Suicide Squeeze Records this year, already releasing hits from King Tuff and Iron and Wine.  They’re gearing up for another 7″ from Gap Dream titled Ali Baba.  I love the casual way this songs opens up, not really forcing the issue.  For the most part, the song trickles in the same manner throughout, with Gabe Fulvimar sitting around kicking out his vocals in a calm and cool manner.  I have a feeling that a lot of people are really going to enjoy this tune…it’s like a garage rocker for the laid back type.

New Jam from Broncho

I went to school in Oklahoma, so I’ve got to rep the OK bands from time to time.  One of the acts that’s been on my radar is Broncho, kicking out catchy garage jams that encourage anthemic sing-alongs. The group has just put out their debut, Can’t Get Past the Lips, and now they’re in the full swing of a nation-wide tour.  If you’re looking for hooks and a bit of grit that harkens back to the swagger of the 70s, then you’re definitely going to love listening to this group.  They’ll be playing a show in Austin at FFF Fest Nites over at Red 7, so get your ears ready.

Show Preview: The People’s Temple @ the Mohawk (9.17)

Location Mohawk
Doors 9 PM
Tickets $9 at the Door

There’s pretty much a great show to attend every night of this week, so if you’re a die-hard rock n’ roller, you should probably start your week off right over at the Mohawk.  The People’s Temple are one of the bands I stumbled upon a few years back, and I’ve been following them pretty closely since then.  They recently put out a great new 7″ on Hozac Records, and that’s only made me more excited to hear their psychedelic garage rock this Monday evening.  Opening the show will be Dead Space and Foreign Mothers, helping to round out a pretty noteworthy evening at one of our favorite spots.

Great Floating Folk Number from Day Joy

I’ve been looking through the window at the rain for hours, trying to get the site ready for the week.  One of the tracks we were sent just seems perfectly fitting for the soundtrack of these last two hours. Florida’s Day Joy have crafted this emotional folk number, which gives me the impression that my life is quietly floating by as the rain soaks my yard.  It’s a pretty special listen, and one that moved me the minute I pressed play.  You can find this track and others on the band’s debut, Go To Sleep, Mess; the record will be released soon by Small Plate Records.

Have A Nice Weekend

It is going to be raining. There are a lot of shows. Be safe. Be happy. This song makes me happy.

Stars just released The North and will be touring through the fall including a stop at ACL, playing on Sunday during my birthday party at 1:15. I’m inviting all of you to the Barton Springs stage. I know some of you may venture off towards the Freelance Whales or Moon Duo. I understand. I may even stop by.

In the mean time, I give you 4:39 of happy.

Benefit Album from The Flute Flies (ft. Ivan from the Rosebuds)

I know how important the word community can be in regards to music, so when I read about the benefit album being put together by some of the heavy hitters in North Carolina’s music scene, I knew I had to share.  Ivan from the Rosebuds (the most well-known of the bunch) and two other friends have created a record titled Yes Means Maybe, using the moniker The Flute Flies.  Right now, they’re offering the album for a donation only, which is an absolute must, as all the money goes to Tisch Brain Tumor Center.  The TBT Center is important to the story because their friend, and member of the NC music community, was a patient there before his passing. You know this means a lot to the musicians involved, so please head over to the band’s BANDCAMP and donate–enjoy the music they created in honor of the cause too.

Quiet Number from Levek

I’ve been listening to the Levek record for a few weeks now, and it goes all over the place musically, in an endearing way.  But, I’m completely on board with the release of the new single, “Girl In the Fog.”  It’s a soft, guitar-based track, allowing the vocals of David Levesque to live in the foreground.  For my two cents, I hear an approach similar to what Devendra Banhart used to do, though with a much more pleasant vocal.  This is one of the standout tunes on David’s new record, Look a Little Closer, which comes out next Tuesday via Lefse Records.
