Here’s a tasty little pop number called “Just To Be Like You” coming your way from NYC based band Ski Lodge.  We brought you one of their sweet jams “I Would Die to Be” way back in June so we’re excited to share this new pop track with you.  This song appears on new single from the band due out April 16th on Dovecote Records.

In other news, the band just announced that they’ll be coming into town for SXSW next week.  Shite, I should have put them on my SXSW watchlist…  Check their facebook page for some SXSW dates & times.

Lets Have Fun with All Tiny Creatures

alltinycreatures_by_chris_rosenauAt first I didn’t really know what to make of this new jam from All Tiny Creatures, but like all good things, I came around. Sometimes it’s best if we sit back and revel in bands that are just making joyous music.  There’s definitely a hodge-podge of sounds working within it: I hear modern electro-pop and even some eighties guitar riffs.  It’s funny how it all actually fits together in one rad little track.  This tune and more will be on the band’s new record, Dark Clock, which comes out May 28th via Hometapes.  It’ll be interesting to see what they do with a whole album!

Appleseed Cast Are Back

Appleseed Cast copy

I think we all know by now that I am the resident Appleseed Cast fanatic around these parts and I plan to keep it that way.  Today I was surprised and excited to see a new song called “Great Lake Derelict” floating around on the internet via various sites.  The Cast have been very quiet since the release of their last album Sagarmatha in 2009, so you can imagine my anticipation of new music from the band.  You can tell by the photo that the band lineup has changed drastically since their beginnings (only Chris Crisci remains from the original lineup), but the sound really isn’t all that different to me.  Though the drums are a bit sloppy and the whirling organ is new, the atmospheric, driving qualities are all still there.  It’s a badass song that I hope won’t go unnoticed by the indie world.  Respect the Cast.

New album Illumination Ritual is out April 23rd on Graveface Records.

Show Review: Efterklang @ Mohawk (3.6)

Danish powerhouse Efterklang had a difficult task when they came to town on Wednesday night, which was more or less, SXSW eve.  It’s hard to entice people to a show when their racked with anxiety about scheduling and/or hiding from the masses.  Sure, it wasn’t sold out, but all those in attendance were treated to a joyous evening set by the group.

Read on for our thoughts on the show, and photos from B. Gray.

ATH & SXSW: 3 to Watch Part 4.

sxsw-&-athSo close! Yet we’re so far away.  Okay, not really…SXSW is officially upon us, and shows are sprouting up all over the place.  Personally, I’m freaking out.  So many incredible bands that I want to see for the first time, and so many more that I would gladly see a hundred times over.  Here’s a list of a few acts that I haven’t actually caught yet, so I’ll be seeing them for the first time…SXSW is the first time to lose your band cherry. Lovely New Pop from the Phoenix Foundation

1745Man, as the sun warms us up, pop songs are where it’s at! This new track from New Zealand outfit, The Phoenix Foundation, is just such a hit.  It’s got this blissed out synth beat bursting throughout, with Lukas Buda voice dancing atop it.  I love the change to high notes around the 2.5 minute mark, adding some loftier moments to an already stellar track.  If you like what you’re hearing, then you should check out their new album Fandango when it hits stores on May 14th courtesty of Memphis Industries.

New Single from Day Joy

DayJoy5_191340Just a short while ago, Day Joy released their excellent album, Go to Sleep, Mess, which features this great new single.  I like the fact that this tune exepmlifies the diversity in the group’s sound, offering a look at the softer side of the band’s musical approach.  The vocals are really soft on this tune, and there’s no rushing their delivery.  Meanwhile, the backing tracks have some quieted picking going on in the background, all coated in a wash of atmospheric haze.  It’s a long number, with plenty of interesting moments that unfold before your ears…stay tuned to the end to listen to the string arrangement that bookends the tune.

Mellow Tune from Flower Orgy

FlowerOrgy_Press2_webFlower Orgy wasn’t a band that was on my radar until I heard this new track they released to preview their upcoming 7″.  My first listen really reminds me of that intimate quality that Conor Oberst had as a bright-eyed young kid.  There’s light brushes of piano playing behind a quietly strummed guitar.  This is definitely a song that I can see myself listening to for some time, which makes me excited to meet the work of Nate Luce and Flower Orgy. The new 7″ will be available on May 14th.
