More New Tunes from The Mantles

1885Seems like it’s going to be a pretty good year for Slumberland Records.  They’ve already tossed out the new Wax Idols/Girls Names/Golden Grrrls LPs, and now they’re set to release Long Enough to Leave on June 18th.  On the latest hit from The Mantles, the group offers up a bit of nostalgia to go with their blend of garage-pop;  it’s current, but could easily fit into the late 60s. There’s definitely an evolving spirit from the San Fran/Oakland group that has my ear perked for the full-length. Just more great hits from SR today I guess!

Beautiful Folk Style Tune From Steve Gunn

Gunn_bandSteve Gunn is a guy that I’ve always known as more of a solo artist or the incredible lead guitar player for several bands.  This new track “Water Wheel” is Steve’s first foray into full band material and I’d say he’s pulling things off quite well.  My first thoughts can’t help but imagine some of the more subtle tunes by CSNY.  You’ll certainly hear a folk influence with some great guitar playing throughout.  Perfect for a sunny drive as we ease into summer.

New album Time Off is due out on June 18th via Paradise of Brothers Records.

Bouncing Pop from English Singles

slr191I picked up this English Singles 7″ from the record store last night, so I had to share it with you all, that way you could do the same.  It’s precisely what I expected from the group, filled with catchy hooks and sing-a-long lyrics.  Just listen to that pounding drum beat; try to listen and not find yourself bobbing up and down. There’s three jams from the Sacramento act on the Ordinary Girls 7″, which I’m telling you is a must for your collection.  You can pick it up from Slumberland Records immediately!

Sludge Rock From WTCHS

2984239417-1When I first hit play on this new track “Mr. Hands” from Ontario based WTCHS, I knew I was in for something special.  From the get go, it drops into some seriously loud, in your face sludge rock that carries on throughout the song.  They like to reference QOTSA when asked to define their sound, and I see that, but it somehow manages to be even nosier and darker.  Daddy likes.

This song is on a new split 7″ from the croup with a B-Side by Thoughts on Air.  Check it out on bandcamp and order yourself a copy.

Show Review: ACL Taping of Phoenix (5/6)

I had been on a lucky streak of good crowds for a few shows, so it pains me to ask – Hey Austin, why do ushers have to tell you to put away your phones and shut up at a taping?!?!

Pheonix played a lovely set. Too bad I had to wait for said ushers to get out of the way to see the stage as each of the four people in front of us had to be told to put away their phones one by one. Too bad the superfangirls couldn’t stop informing each other how jealous their friends are that they are at a show they are talking through. It is an ACL Taping. Know your place and watch the show and understand how lucky you are to be there.

I promise to talk about the band after the break (followed by more ranting)…

Folk from Alphabetical Order Orchestra

alphabetical-order-orchestraMake no mistake about it, we here at ATH are huge fans of My Latest Novel.  But what does that have to do with Alphabetical Order Orchestra you may ask? Well, the band is made up of members of MLN, who are currently on a hiatus, so this new project is pretty exciting.  There’s no word on any upcoming release, as this track was just recorded a few days ago.  It’s a much more straight-forward presentation, but I’ll take what I can kick for the moment, hoping to see what comes next from the group.

Show Preview: Chad Valley @ Holy Mountain (5/7)

chadvalley

Date 5/7/13
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9pm
Tickets $8 @ Frontgate

Sorry for our tardiness on this post, but we felt it warranted despite the late notice.  This evening a great show is going down at new favorite venue Holy Mountain featuring the likes of Chad Valley, Ski Lodge, and local up and comers Orthy.  I see the headliner as being enough to spend on this cheap show so the above average undercard makes it a must do.  That is if you don’t have to work on Wednesday… Maybe even if you do.

Nice Pop Music From Dream Sick

3069942621-1Here’s a new song called “Tiny People” from Tucson based 4 piece group Dream Sick.  I’m sure many of you have never heard of the group before, and I’ll admit that I hadn’t either until a few days ago, so let this serve as an introduction to the band for you and me.  Having just released new album Morkkis by their own accord, the band have been working hard to get the word out to waiting music fans.  At the core, these guys create some nice pop tunes with reverby swirling guitars that can create some special moments in their music.  Check out the song below and maybe get your hands on the band’s new album via bandcamp.

ACL 2013 Lineup Announced

In case you are a normal human being and were sleeping, the lineup for this year’s two weekend festival was announced. These are the bands that allegedly will be there both weekends so there is still a little room to play, but the lineup is really good. Sure, you can find things to complain about, but a Lionel Richie sing-along is not allowed to be one of them.

As leaked, The Cure is a big name as is Depeche Mode. If the organizers dare put them up against each other, there may be a guyliner revolt of 40 somethings. Who cares about Muse besides the guys that program bumper music at ESPN?

We do get Atoms For Peace, Wilco, The National, Vampy Weeks, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, Tame Impala, Local Natives, Grimes, Portugal. The Man, Divine Fits, Purity Ring, Haim, Smith Westerns, Junip, Phospherescent, Thao & The GDSD, Foxygen, Parquet Courts, Fidlar, Wild Nothing and Electric Six, to name a few.

Wristbands are on sale at 10am. Get in line online. Full list after the break…

She & Him – Volume 3

sheandhim

Rating: ★★★½☆

When it comes to indie queens of the Continental United States, there’s no skirting around it, Zooey Deschanel holds her own. Toting her own TV show, girly advice website, and, of course, half of this dynamic duo, she’s got her plate full. And of course, the Him of the title, M. Ward, has his own musical career in addition to this side project. So sometimes it’s even easy to forget about She & Him, but Volume 3 is a nice little reminder of the talent within this pair.

This third effort in this series of albums from She & Him is far from a reflection of its collective members being busy with their own lives, and more of a representation of the goodness that these two have to offer to the indie music scene. First up, they come at you swinging in “I’ve Got Your Number, Son,” which makes for a burst of color to start the album. High-pitched yelps and ‘oohs’ from Zooey are the first sounds to reach your ears, and from this instant, you know Volume 3 is going to be a work of higher energy from these two.

Higher energy, yes, but they still stick to their retro, Phil Spector ‘wall-of- sound’ style for this third work. Which leads me to essentially the same criticism I had with Volume Two: there’s just not a lot different than their previous album, or even Volume One. Granted, it works for the two of them, as Deschanel’s vocals seem to belong to another era entirely, and are suited nicely by the musical accompaniment of rag-timey piano, acoustic guitar, some simple bass lines. However while the band takes advantage of this to craft a style, which they have thus adhered to up to this point, on the tracks that don’t exactly pop out from the rest, the lack of novelty works against these two and I found myself tuning it out—it’s been done before…by them.

But that’s not to say that Volume 3 doesn’t have some mighty fine good tunes for fans or those who have been under a rock since 2008. In fact, there are quite a few hits on here that stand out not only on the album level, but also through She & Him’s whole catalog. There’s singles like “I Could’ve Been Your Girl” and “Sunday Girl,” that evoke a sassier side of Zooey, playing on her vocal tones and even employing a bit of playful French. On the other hand, at the end of the album you have some excellent slower numbers like “London” and “Shadow of Love–” both will wow you with their simple power and beauty within Deschanel’s vocals.

The bottom line is there’s nothing really fundamentally new to the style on Volume 3, which may exactly be what the band is going for by continuing the trend of entitling their albums ‘Volumes.’ If such is the case, then this is a contender for the most hits.
