Stream A Clap Your Hands Say Yeah EP

I was on the fence about the last chunk of material from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I am a fan of this title track from the freshly unleashed EP called “Little Moments”. It is a synth driven builder clocking in at a little over three minutes with a vocal that sounds like it was recorded in a living room. It might be digitally-driven, but it has a bit of the raw nerve that I loved from early works.

Stream the title track right down there and listen to the rest over on Bandcamp.

Grooms Sign To Western Vinyl + New Single

groomsGrooms is a band that picked up lots of love on our website a few years ago with their stellar SXSW performances and later with their top albums worthy LP Prom.  So with that out of the way, we were clearly excited to hear that the band had signed with local label Western Vinyl for the release of their new album Infinity Caller on September 3rd.  To preview the new album before it’s release, the band recently dropped this new single “I Think We’re Alone Now”.  I’m sure you’ll enjoy the sort of hazy pop sounds that the band can create so effortlessly.  I find this one irresistible.

New Music from Richard Youngs

wh8e_RichardYoungsI’ve got a slight obsession with Richard Youngs.  He’s one of those musicians where you never know exactly what you’ll get from listening to a new LP, especially as he battles Bob Pollard for one of the most prolific people out there.  He’s just announced a new album, Summer Through My Mind, which should be out on September 3rd via Ba Da Bing Records.  This track’s pretty simple, and if it weren’t for the odd little touches coursing through the track, it might be fairly redundant.  But, like Richard always does, his voice warms you over, and you’re drawn in from there.  Take a listen to the album’s title track.

Austin Spotlight: Genuine Leather

The_Viper_600pxIt’s always nice to start off the week with something catchy and fresh, so I figured this new hit from Austin’s Genuine Leather is the perfect way to get thing started.  The band is currently in the studio working on their upcoming LP, and this is our first taste.  It’s got crunchy guitar work to get things moving in the right direction, and the delivery of the vocals have this innate hook that encourages you to get down with the band. This track is perfect for wrapping up your summer with fun times, so make sure you include it in your next hit list.

Show Review: New Order @ Austin Music Hall (7/19)

Let’s take a moment to reflect. New Order and (by inevitable association) Joy Division have been a massive influence on what I listen to even now. Recent songs shared here from bands like Flaamingos and Knifight could easily be tagged. Substance is standard issue listening, isn’t it? How could it not have an impact? So to see New Order, an elusive bucket-list band, announce the first North American show of their tour would be in Austin – well, it was a big day.

…and then I got the approval email to shoot the show. My head nearly exploded.

Holy Ghost! opened, added win. Read on for gushing fanboyisms and plenty of pics.

Happy Friday With St. Lucia

Preparations are underway at the IT Dept. for tonight’s sold out show at the Austin Music Hall with a little band called New Order. Heard of ’em? Bonus to get a favorite in Holy Ghost to open things up.

If you are getting ready to dance with the rest of us old people or just bummed that you missed out on tix, this track is here to help. It is by St. Lucia. I happened to hear it on an MOKB session on Sirius XM and remembered I wanted to post it just now. When The Knight lands on October 8th via Neon Gold.

I get to photograph New Order tonight…

New Weirdo-Pop from Alligator Indian

Alligator-Indian-press-photoOccasionally, you’ve just got to mix things up to get yourself outside the confines of mainstream.  I think that’s precisely what the duo of Alligator Indian have accomplished with their blissful, yet oddball, songwriting.  The vocals are carefully draped over electronic beats that seem safer in a haunted house than anywhere else.  There are a few vocal bursts that provide an extra sensation of haunting as they soar high in the mix.  It might be a touch odd, but it’s definitely enjoyable.  You can find more such tracks on the group’s upcoming More Songs About Animals and TV EP, which comes out September 17th via Bleeding Gold Records.

Fresh Indie Pop from The Steinbecks

steinbecksAs promised, it’s been a remarkable week for our friends at Matinee Recordings. Already with two new releases under their belt, they return with a new 7″ from the Steinbecks…the band’s first release in six years. It’s a preview of what’s to come when the band release a full-length later in the year.  From the moment this track opens, it’s the vocals that take the focus, with the accompanying music sitting politely in the background.  Lyrically, it’s got the classic touch of great indiepop, referencing personal sentiments throughout.  It’s hard not to fall in love with a song like this playing on your stereo; you can make that happen by heading to Matinee now!

More New Tunes from Modern Hut

HutPromo1.1I can’t say enough about how much I am enjoying Modern Hut right now. This new track from the songwriter features the voice of Screaming Females frontwoman, Marissa Paternoster, who just happens to be the most bad ass girl in rock n’ roll right now.  The duo have written a song that reminds me of a more serious version of The Moldy Peaches, with the focus on the lyrics here much more serious than something like “Who’s Got the Crack.”  It makes for a special listen, providing more anticipation for Generic Treasure, which hits stores on August 6th via Don Giovanni Records.

Dark Throwback Pop From Flaamingos

flaamingosWhen you first listen to up and coming L.A. band Flaamingos, you will inevitably make the immediate and all too easy Joy Division comparison that’s slapped on tons of bands now a days.  Don’t get me wrong, I hear those dark bass tones and distant vocals, but these guys are offering more than just an easy comparison.  I hear those all too familiar JD sonic qualities mixed with more poppy bands from the 80s or even more modern groups like Cold Cave.  Regardless of how you want to label them, I’m sure you can find something to enjoy about this new single “Walk A Wire”.  I’m finding something new to like after each replay.

The self-titled debut album from Flaamingos will be available on August 27th via Felte Sounds.
