Hey You Danceateria Types! Check Out World’s End Press

WorldsEndPress_PhotobyMaclean_Stephenson_2.132234I’ve got no qualms with my adoration of the Australian music scene, though I tend to have a certain arena from the country that I fawn over.  This new tune by World’s End Press doesn’t necessarily fall into that category, but it’s something worthy of including on your Friday night playlist.  It’s an electronic dance tune, playfully constructed to emit the maximum amount of frivolity. It’s got pulsing grooves, nicely spun harmonies and a general attraction that invades your spirit.  Yep, Friday’s are for dancing.  Stay tuned, as the world will get more from the band when their debut album is released on October 4th.

Old School Feeling from Bottomless Pit

bottlessI don’t really know too much about Bottomless Pit, other than that a few of the guys were part of Silkworm back in the day.  That probably doesn’t mean too much now, as the band have forged a new sound, though I can see where it takes roots in sprawling rock n’ roll from a land before time.  The guitars wear some distortion on their sleeves, yet they also cut pretty sharply through one another.  While I appreciate the vocals in the context, the musicianship is what I’ve really been enjoying as I’ve listened to this song.  The band’s 3rd LP, Shade Perennial will be released on October 29th via Comedy Minus One.

New Hit from Geoffrey O’Connor of Crayon Fields

My adoration with Geoffrey O’Connor admittedly began with his work with geoffCrayon Fields, one of our favorite exports from Australia.  But, that being said, I’ve also really enjoyed the work he’s done solo, so it comes as no surprise that this new single is making my day.  His warm voice is placed over heavy electronic beats, alongside a female counterpart for the chorus.  Personally, I like the way his voice almost approaches a soft whisper; it’s one of the things that makes his music so interesting and enjoyable.  This is the first single that follows up his solo debut, Vanity is Forever (a must have). It’ll be released worldwide via Chapter Music.

Arctic Monkeys – AM

AMRating: ★★★★☆

When a bunch of young chaps from Sheffield formed a band back in 2002, I doubt they had any idea they would be headlining Glastonbury, let alone headlining Glastonbury… twice. But ten years later, here they are, on their fifth LP release, still taking the indie world by storm and gaining more and more of a following after every release. AM, as aforementioned their fifth studio release, and gives a bit of a nod to their growth into a headlining super power. With this growth, do these no-longer-chaps from Sheffield still have something left in them to keep the hype going around them?

The single, and opening track “Do I Wanna Know?” certainly gives a roaring answer to this question. Stomping drumbeats set the tone, followed closely by some extremely buzzy guitar lines that come off as dark and sinister. Alex Turner’s enticing and subtly sensual vocals coat everything in a sort of heat that reminds me of the edgy coyness of Humbug. Turner spits lyrics out quickly, each line catchier than the next in his bad-boy persona, urging you to empathize with him and perhaps slick your hair back a bit when you sing along to the front man’s part in the call and response chorus. This song sets the tone for the rest of the album: cheeky, but not to the point in which evokes disgust. Turner and company make tunes that embody the very essence of cool.

But what makes AM relatable and not intangibly too cool is the subject matter: heartache. If you were to just listen to the instrumental portion of this record, you would enjoy it because it’s catchy and interesting, but as for emotionally available, it is a bit harder than you would expect from the Arctic Monkeys. The guitars are a bit edgier and noisier for the most part, with riffs tending to the hard rock genre. Take the song “I Want it All,” for example—extra heavy on guitar and light on everything else save for vocals. Musically, it sounds like a very dominant and confident tune, but then there’s Turner confessing: “Ain’t it just like you to kiss me and then hit the road?” There is this steady confidence exuded through the heartache that Turner spins songs about. Even on the slower numbers that don’t possess the gritty guitar, such as closer “I Wanna Be Yours” that embodies an R&B song more than anything, you still have unapologetic longing to be in love.

Though I wouldn’t consider myself a diehard fan of this group, I simply can’t deny that this is a great record, complete with a variety of genres touched upon here. Yes, Turner’s edgy lyrics remain constant, wrapped around the theme of love/infatuation—perhaps not enough in return from a particular subject—but it never comes across as repetitive or banal. AM is something you can take bits from and sympathize with as well as just enjoy on a musical level.

John Dwyer Unearths The Herms

hermspromophoto_101756Being John Dwyer has to be pretty sweet.  Not only does he get to front Thee Oh Sees, but he gets to run Castle Face Records too.  A great band and a great label? Sweet gig bro.  It’s also allowed him some time to really dig deep into his local or nearby history, as is the case with Berkley band The Herms.  He’s taken some early demos and 8-track recordings from the group and compiled them into the Drop Out Vol. 1 LP.  This is the first take on this band for many of us, and this swaggering bit of rock n’ roll is enough to see exactly why John took on the project.  It’s rock like this that I can get behind.

Cate Le Bon Wins Again with New Single

cateI was amazed at the first live set I caught of Cate Le Bon a few years back.  I found her effort following that good too, but I get the feeling this new release is going to be pretty great.  On the latest single she takes a really laid back approach, allowing the groove to sit calmly in the foreground while her marvelous voice operates all around. Then there’s this angelic backing vocal that comes in just before the 3 minute mark; it’s just a beautiful touch.  Her latest effort Mug Museum will be out on November 12 via Wichita Recordings.

Yet Another Hit from Dot Dash

dotdashWhen it rains it pours, and in this case, it’s raining hits for our friends in Dot Dash.  The DC group has just released their latest LP, Half-Remembered Dream, via The Beautiful Music, and the latest single is just another reason why more people should put everything down to fall in love with this band. There’s a bit more of a punkier element on this track, but the warmth of the vocals, which dominates the new record, really does wonders to keep the song perfectly balanced throughout.  If you’re in need of a new album that combines great melodies with power-pop guitars, then go get your hands on this year’s hottest ticket.

Young Galaxy Preps Deluxe Edition

I’m not so interested in the re-release of Ultramarine, but sometimes a deluxe edition comes with a new track or two. Young Galaxy decided to share a single called “Sea Drug”.

It is a lovely piece of pop music that has subtle flourishes throughout, thoughtful and crafty production. Use that first link in the post to preorder your copy of Ultramarine which includes B-Sides and a “Crying My Heart Out”.
