Noisy Noise Rocker from Odonis Odonis

odonisThe last few months we’ve tried to illustrate the musical growth of Odonis Odonis, a band who’ve grown since their inception.  But, let’s not pretend like we didn’t love the noise that the band brought forth from the get-go.  The song is in your face from the moment you press play, filled with discordant sounds and screeching vocals that require adequate earplugs.  They’re only a few short weeks away from the release of their newest LP, Hard Boiled Soft Boiled, which is out on April 15th via Buzz Records. You can check out a video of the track HERE.

Show Preview: RF Shannon @ Cheer Up Charlies (3.27) – FREE!!!

rfshannon

Date Thursday, March 27th
Location Cheer Up Charlies
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets FREE

Traveling acts are rather sparse this week, as the bands wait for us to clean the streets of SXSW, so you’re best bet is to catch one of the great local acts playing about town.  My suggestion is to catch RF Shannon this Thursday evening over at Cheer Up Charlies.  The show is FREE, for one, but the group is also one of the acts who everyone is expecting a big year from in Austin.  They’ve just released their Hunting Songs LP on Punctum Records, which is worth your listening pleasure.  They’ll be joined on the evening by King Mary and Real Live Tigers.  Join me, won’t you?

Web of Sunsets – Room of Monsters

webofsunRating: ★★★★☆

This three piece from Minneapolis are fairly new to Web of Sunsets, but each member is not new to being in a band. The culmination of members from three different bands, this group originated in 2012 and began to create their take on ‘acid country,’ or what you might consider psychedelic soft folk rock. Room of Monsters, their debut full-length release, will have you swooning over dreamy soundscapes and delicate arrangements.

What’s special about the sound that is presented to you on Room of Monsters is the cohesive and smooth nature of all the nine songs on the record. There’s a general golden haze that coats the whole thing in a bath of twilight. Starting from “Wildflowers,” the opening track, you get the twang of the guitars coated in reverb and a ton of ambient noise generated by a synth and perhaps the soft twinkle of a keyboard. There’s a nice balance of acoustic folk sound that is mediated by electric guitar riffs echoing in the background. The vocals themselves, raspy to match the haze of the instrumentation, are also sugary on this first number; the feminine sweetness as well as their ghostly warbles simultaneously juxtapose and compliment the twang of the guitars. The result is an immediate hook to the music, enchanting you to keep listening.

This isn’t the only dynamic offered to you—on the contrary, each of the three members seem to trade the role of lead from song to song, sometimes grouping together for harmonies to grace the chorus of a song. Take the title track for example, “Room of Monsters, ”which comes to you in the middle of the album—we get Chris Rose’s vocals leading the way, but the ladies of the band join him for the group vocals. Though the sound is beautiful and delicate, there’s an interesting aspect of eerie that seems to haunt the album. It’s the odd sensation of being on the whole comfortable with a cool breeze, though it still gives you goosebumps; the haunting resonance of this group is sure not to leave you.

Oddly enough, despite the lack of percussion as well as variety on this album, I don’t find myself bored or sick of the sound when it comes to a close. The constantly rotating lead vocals and precision harmonies keep it from getting stale or uninteresting. Instead you have Room of Monsters, a stunning debut from this three piece that will have you lost in its elegant simplicity, akin to a radiant sunset.

Another Single from Papercuts

papercutsI’m pretty excited about the Papercuts record coming out in a short bit.  I don’t know why necessarily, but Jason Quever has been one of my personal favorites for some time; I guess I always felt like it was my own secret favorite band. Anyways, his Life Among the Savages is quickly approaching, and with each new single, it’s hard not see the continued growth in his songwriting.  There’s the presence of a soft echo on his voice, which has always been there with his recordings, but what impacted me the most on this listen was the spirit and bounce apparent within the track.  If like me, you’re loving what you’re hearing from the band, then you can grab the release on May 6th from Easy Sound Recording.

Austin Spotlight: OBN IIIs

Upload_OBN_ByeEmos_2011_12_29-01_29_46

Unless you’ve been living under a rock in the Austin music scene, you are familiar with Orville Bateman’s musical project known as OBN III’s.  He is of course involved in tons of other bands in town, but this one is a personal favorite of mine.  Today we’ve gotten news that the group has recently finished a new album and is spreading the word with this great new track called “No Time For the Blues”.  It’s of course in the punk rock genre, and I’m down for that.  You can also hear some hints of another famous front man by the name of King Khan in there too, and I can’t see how anyone wouldn’t be down for that as well.

Pick up new album, Third Time to Harm, on May 27th via Tic Tac Totally Records.

Introducing Luxembourg Signal

LuxBand2This isn’t actually an introduction, so much as a return visit to some of our old friends.  Luxembourg Signal are in fact various members of Aberdeen and Trembling Blue Stars (JJ,BA, and BE to be exact), indicating to some that you’re alredy in love with the band, and you haven’t even heard them yet.  They’ve just signed on with the respected folks over at Shelflife Records to release their debut 7″, and we’ve got the tune below for the A-Side.  The song is crafted where it provides warmth via the the vocals, yet still holds an expansive sound that seems to always have been present in the songwriting of the core writers.  Hopefully we get to hear more from the group, sooner rather than later.

New Pop from James and the Express

jateFor those of you in the need of something soft and catchy on this Tuesday afternoon, then I suggest you spend a little bit of time with James and the Express. They’ve just released a brand new album via Jigsaw Records titled Your Friend, JATE, and it’s the perfect way to delight in the waning hours of your day.  You’ll definitely find yourself in a drifting mood, but one that’s encouraged by supremely well-written pop tunes.  There’s twelve blissful songs on the record, and you can grab yourself a copy right HERE.

SxSW Film: What I Saw That You Should Too

Upload SxSW 2014 Film 20140308200729SxSW Film Festival is over. Unlike the Music portion, you can go see exactly what I saw.

Going in with the intention to see as many docs as possible, I was lured by several features. Now, those features all have music, so I guess I am OK. But I did still see a lot of docs and few that were very music related. For instance, I was kicking it at The Paramount with my bros in Spandau Ballet.

Here come some brief reviews of things you need to see and some related photos from the film side of the conference.

New Synth Pop Up from Lust for Youth

22The last few releases from Lust for Youth have been really dark, and almost sterile, in their construction.  But, this new single, from the band’s forthcoming LP, International, seems to have more pop sensibility, both in the electronic instrumentation and the tonal quality of the vocals.  Still, there’s something dark and sinister that always seems to accompany the group’s work, so if they’re able to combine that with a few pop elements, this could be a hands-down favorite at the ATH offices.  The new album will be out on June 10th via Sacred Bones, who will include a cassette of remixes if you pick it up from them.

Show Preview: Bad Sports @ Beerland (3.26)

badsports1

Date Wednesday, March 26th
Location Beerland
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets Tickets at the door

For those of you looking to get out of the house on Wednesday night, this is hands down the best line-up you’ll find, possibly all week long.  You’ll get to open your evening with our favorites, Eets Feats, who always put on a solid live set, then they’ll be followed by Zoltars.  If you haven’t listened to the latter band’s Walking Through the Dark then you’re missing something that belongs in your record collection.  The night will close out with Fleshlights and Bad Sports.  These are two acts that I never grow tired of seeing live; they’re full of energy and a rawness that you don’t always get when going out about town.  I’d say your plans for Wednesday night have already been made.
