King Creosote Quietly Releases New Album

1889064_409615282514747_1920060549594188106_oMaybe being overseas is a detriment to my adoration of King Creosote.  I fell in love with the songwriter several years back, and unfortunately, his releases don’t get quite the fan-fare they do overseas.  Just this week, he’s quietly released an album titled From Scotland With Love, which is comprised of original songs he wrote with his band to correlate to a documentary of the same name.  There’s the same ornate craftsmanship he’s always brought to the table, and according to Domino, he’s stepped out of his comfort zone to narrate, musically speaking, from the perspective of other characters.  If you’re in the mood for something of beauty, look no further.

New Music from Stardeath and White Dwarfs

starHaving spent a great deal of time in Oklahoma (college and what not), I’ve always been a bit skeptical of the work of Stardeath and White Dwarfs.  Their relation to Wayne Coyne was secretly met with much trepidation, but this new single puts all that bullshit to the side; it’s probably the best track the group have completed to date.   The melody within the tune is treated with great care, flowing out effortlessly, yet held back and released slowly to maximize its emotional impact.  Their brand new record, Wastoid, is due on Federal Prism on July 29th.

Hamish Kilgour of the Clean Releases Album

hamishI spent my weekend going over some singles that I didn’t really feel got the deserved love in my rotation last week, and this tune from Hamish Kilgour was one of those that stuck out the most to me.  Sure, he was one of the founding members of the Clean, so I’ve got some nostalgic allegiance, but I think the approach taken on this track really makes it stand out.  There’s this stuttering guitar playing with a nice wash of varying instruments playing in the distance…all the while, Kilgour carefully walks you through with his vocals.  His first solo album All of It and Nothing will be released by Ba Da Bing Records on September 16th.

Ed Schrader’s Music Beat Ready New Single

infinityWhen I caught Ed Schrader’s Music Beat back in the Spring, I was extremely impressed by the band’s ability to create such a huge sound, despite only two members (and one who was just filling in for  a few shows). This brand new single from the group might not indicate that huge wall of spirited rock they created, but I like it’s off-kilter propulsive beat.  There’s something lurking in its simplicity that hooks its nails into my soul; I just can’t get this jam out of my head. Look for the Laughing/Bedouin Tramps single in a few weeks from Infinity Cat Recordings.

Hooray for Hooray for Earth

racyIf I were to sit around and pick my top few singles for the month of July, this new track from Hooray for Earth would definitely be in my top two or three.  There’s multiple components of the tune that keep me coming back to it: I love the seeming rise and fall of the guitar chords; I love the contrast between the verse and chorus, soft then loud (that’s a new tactic, right?).  Shit. I could listen to this song two hundred more times and probably never grow tired of it; it’s a pretty perfect pop number. Their album Racy will be released by Dovecote Records on July 29th; I have a feeling I’m going to love it.

Pink Frost Bring the Rock

artworks-000085411868-lp93mt-t500x500It’s Friday ya’ll, and what better way to end the week now behind you than with a little rock music.  Now this is by no means just straight rock music, it’s definitely a little bit left of center with a style unique to the band.  The unique tune below called “Seek and Recover” comes to you from Chicago based up and comers Pink Frost.  I dig that the tune melds a sort of metal sound with a more modern take on the grunge rock genre completed by the haunting vocals throughout.  That’s definitely not something you hear everyday.

This track will appear on a new EP entitled Traitors due out September 16th.
